Find it hard to believe Norma was on board with this. She was an excellent actor although she could be a real scenery chewer at times.
Louis B Mayer was notorious for positioning himself as a piously religious father figure who considered his actors his children, but in reality he was quite a pig, a manipulator, and played hardball. I'll never understand how studios used to have as much power as they had, to the extent of holding sway over local law enforcement.

I'm not buying this one. Norma Shearer and Louis B. Mayer were at odds even before Irving Thalberg died in 1936 so I doubt Mayer was procuring young men for Shearer.
It's fascinating that Shearer's reputation has gone into such steep decline given that from 1924 to 1942 she, along with Joan Crawford and Greta Garbo, was one of MGM's biggest moneymakers. For all that Crawford resented Shearer's position as Mrs. irving Thalberg, Crawford got the last laugh in terms of lasting fame (or infamy).

@Sherry, I know men can be raped (and it's a horrible thing), but I don't get how a man can be forced to have an erection and then have sex with someone. As far as I know (which is only anatomy, as I don't possess the part in question), an erection is the result of either drugs or desire. The only way I see this playing out is him being forced to perform oral sex on her.

They say the only man in Hollywood w/ a cock as big as Mickey's was Milton Berle. I like that Mayer put him out to stud, to keep actresses happy. Now broads can't pretend women are the only victims in Hollywood.

@7even, if Mickey was still a teen at the time, trust me, he could still get an erection even if he didn't want to. Ask ANY man who sat in school or church and had a hard on. We had erections ALL day long. So Rooney may not have wanted to have sex with Shearer, but he probably could have easily got an erection just thinking about a coin slot in a vending machine.

Mickey Rooney defended the studio system where studios owned theaters and actors were under long-term contract, even if he saw what it did to Judy Garland.
Garland was milked to death as a teenager by Mayer. She had a schedule that left her no time out, always rehearsing or being on set, and MGM picked directors such as Busby Berkeley, who put her under a lot of stress. Plus the continuous jokes if she took a few pounds, etc.
That's why she became addicted to pills, and had these various breakdowns when she was an adult. She took a heavy toll when she did three or four MGM musicals a year.
Privately, Rooney was much more critical of the system. But his own career owed a lot to these methods, because he was one of the guys who may not have been as famous with a different method.
Erections can be an uncontrolled reaction to outside stimuli.
I think Norma was kind of a freak, and I think it's very possible.
He married Ava Gardner and Norma ended up with a much younger man so who knows.
