Your Turn

Adam Sandler signed a four movie deal directly with Netflix. Do you think that movie theatres will ever become a thing of the past?

Yes. I don't go to movie theaters anymore. Too many irritating people and the threat of bedbugs on the seats was the final straw.

SugarTitz said...

No not with imax. But I would pay 1$ extra to watch a new movie from my sofa. .

SugarTitz said...

Agree CoBe. Unless I have to see it now. I will wait and red box it..

The Internet is making that overpriced shit obsolete. If I want to overspend I'll go to Disneylabd. Go Netflix! Go Adam!

supapimp said...

Yep. Me too. Last movie i saw in a theatre was 'the avengers'. Don't miss it.

sandybrook said...

I haven't been to a movie theatre since the mid 1990s. I dont miss it, people are rude and inconsiderate everything is overpriced and I dont like ads.

I don't go to the movie theater either. Why bother when all the movies come out on DVD fast now? i'd rather watch from the comfort of my bed

Lil P said...

It has to be a really good movie to get me out to go see it. Movies are available so quickly now can't justify the price. Plus way more comfy at home no idiots & you can pause for breaks!

Beetlejuice said...

Seriously tho, Gilmore Girls is finally on Netflix!!!!!

skippy said...

Not entirely, there will always be teenagers who want to snog in the back row.
Many movies paid for & no seen. It was loads of fun!!!

Tricia13 said...

I think they just may become antiquated, and that disturbs me a bit. I'm old fashioned in certain ways.....traditionalist in others....I like going to the cinema

I can't stand movie theaters. I always manage to sit behind Tall Dude with Big Hair, or in front of Constant Commenter, or next to Obnoxious Laughter Lady, or a row down from Idiot Who Thinks a Toddler Will Enjoy Matrix: Reloaded. And since Hollywood is pumping out movies for foreign markets based on the bang/crash/sequel of inevitable profits, having Netflix and HBO make actually good shows that people want to watch is a good thing. We can even forgive Netflix for Oatmeal Schilling!

TV Junkie said...

I hope so. We only go to the theater now if there is something the kids just have to see right away. The prices are ridiculous - $8 per person when I can rent it 2 blocks away for $2.79 or watch it on demand for $5, with unlimited people in the room!

SugarTitz said...

I hate parking. Loud talking people and $20 soda and popcorn.
I'll wait and watch in bed.. best way to watch a movie is in bed with ma furballs.

Dena said...

Some movies need to be seen on the big screen to be truly experienced...and I like the popcorn. I say keep them!

Sugar said...

That's kind of sad. I hope that never happens. I don't go see a lot of movies at the theater but I still want them to stick around. Do we really want to go out less? We will all become hermits; drinking, watching movies and eating in our homes and never going out into the world.

Not sure, there are plenty of folks who still love the whole movie theater experience no matter how expensive it is. Although I will say this whole 3D thing is a joke since 99% of the time the film doesn't look any different or add any special value to the experience other than you paid more money and are wearing funny glasses.

Kno Won said...

I'd still pay if there was any courtesy left in the world, but there's not.

Sugar said...

They talk as fast as you do, Beetlejuice!

TV Junkie said...

Omg, Seven, you crack me up!!

Stranger things have happened said...

I disagree. I think theaters will be around for a good while longer. Personally I love the feel of the theater experience and the audience interaction/participation on really good movies. I'll go see a bad or mediocre movie just for the movie experience. I'll watch it at home later, but I prefer being in the theater with friends enjoying a good movie.

Jessi said...

I hope not. There is just something about going to the movies that I love! The overpriced items, not so much, but i's always been one of my favorite things to do.

Yes Beetle!!! Finally Gilmore Girls!!!!

I like going to the movies! Especially an epic film that's loud with lots of action.

Rosie riveter said...

Eight dollars? Thats a great deal

MISCH said...

Yup, I hate crowds, sand living in New York…the bedbug scares…who needs it and my cable bill reflects all this

I love going to the movies! Did i just read ADAM SANDLER? fuckno. Id rather never see another movie again before i watched one of his. I dont even know why they have different titles?he plays the same.fucking.role. And its stupid at that.

Beetlejuice said...

Honestly, i own all the seasons on DVD but now I don't have to get up.

I hate movie theaters. When I am forced to go by the BF, all I can think of is how many people sat in this seat and farted.

Gayeld said...

I think they’ll become like drive-ins, a nostalgia enjoyed in a few areas, but something most kids start at you in confusion when you bring it up.

The demise of the movie theatre didn’t start with Netflix, it started with the VHS tape. Who didn’t think that being able to pause the movie and not miss anything while you went to the bathroom and grabbed snacks wasn’t the best thing ever?

TinselSass said...

I think movie theaters will live on but more as a cultural experience than as popular entertainment.

Related... For film lovers... Yesterday Elvis Mitchell aired an interview with Quentin T about QT's ownership and new role of programmer of the New Beverly Cinema in LA. QT's passion and knowledge of all things film-making and -going is OFF THE CHARTS AWESOME.
(Of course, that Enty has shared stories of Quentin - weird and weirder - made me think of CDaN.)

No. People haven't embraced 3D in the home and IMAX. Plus, dates.

Adam Sandler is going straight to Nexflix because the only people who still watch his movies haven't put the bong down long enough to drive since Big Daddy.

Seven of Eleven said...

I said your name three times and here you are! \o/

D Brown said...

Last few times I been to the movie theatre I mostly saw older folks. Don't know what happened to the whole teenage boy/girl dating movie dates of my youth. As for myself, I mostly rely on DVDs. They come out 6-9 days later but cost about as much as I would pay for a movie ticket, overpriced drink etc.

Lo Key says stop with the censorship already! said...

We still have a drive in theater here. It's awesome!

SugarTitz said...

Having said all this^^^ I'm going to see the disappearance of elanor Rigby this week. I will only go to a matinée at a nice theater when chances are only 4 people max will be there. And I sneak in my mini wine bottles or mudslides. ..hah..no shame in my game..

plokzy said...

Still go to theatres - social thing - but I would not shed a tear if everybody stops going and the industry crumbles. Not many people realize movie theatres are owned by the same studios that make the movies. They lost my trust at 8$ Reese's pieces. I have no urge to fund ur 200 million+ CGI blockbusters

Gayeld said...

We do, too. We go mostly for the dangerously steep slide on the playground.

plokzy said...

Good points

SugarTitz said...

Also. . With movie studios have to give a 50% cut to theaters in us and more overseas. I can see the studios trying to charge a premium to view 1st releases in your home instead. Via a 24 hour rental.

Jason Blue Eyes said...

Eventually they might but not for a long time yet. Premiere magazine would often write these "death of cinema" articles in the late 90's - early 2000's and it hasn't happened yet. We still have a number of directors working today who make movies solely for the theater experience (Spielberg, Cameron, Scott, Scorsese and Tarantino) but once these guys are gone - who the hell knows? It's actually too sad to contemplate.

Diana said...

I like going to the movies-- I usually go to the early shows though - not crowded! If I watch a movie at home I end up doing 100 other things at the same time, get interrupted, etc. Going to the theatre is a beautiful escape - and I truly get to watch the whole movie.

i hope so. and sandler is gonna become one HELL of a mogul! gawd bless 'im.

Keep in mind, we're talking about four Adam Sandler movies.

screw movies vs netflix debate.
WHY ADAM SANDLER- his movies have sucked shit for a while...

Tina Mallette said...

There are still some movies that really should be seen on the big screen but I do foresee a day when the movie theatre is obsolete with the exception of IMAX and 3D theatres.

Unfortunately the home movie experience means people have forgotten theatre etiquette thus ruining the theatre experience for many people never mind the price to take a family. Even though the new theatres are much more comfortable that they used to be.

So I only go to the theatre if it really should be seen in on a big screen - spectacular cinemotography or the rare movie that will motivate me to the screen. Going to a movie tonight, last time I went was about a year ago. Going to see the last movie made by James Gandolfini. Sniff.

DavidHowesCREBroker said...

Menahen Golan once said -- and this was way back in the 1980's -- that watching a movie in the theater was one day going to disappear. I think that day is almost upon us. My wife and I only watch movies at home once they are released "on video." I can't remember the last movie we went to the theater to see.

discoflux said...

Agreed, Count. I can't get IMAX at home.

Mr. Disco and I love going to get appetizers and have a few drinks then going to watch a movie. We saw Guardians of the Galaxy in IMAX 3D and it was awesome. And now AMC is upgrading their theaters with more comfortable seating and lots of theaters here have bars. I think theaters are going to be just fine for a while.Netflix is doing the theaters a FAVOR by not making them waste a screen on any more of Adam Sandler's crap.

Tina Mallette said...

And if this happens, no more move theatres it will make life interesting because box office is where they make the most money on movies as a rule so I wonder then, without theatres, the movie studios are going to have to make up that loss of money somehow and Netflix needs content so I could see paying at least the same amount of money to see a new movie online as you would at the theatre.

It's going to shake up the already shook up world of movies.

I wish you could see all those movies that go to film festivals and never are seen again.

TIFF was going to set up something where if the director was willing to put those films on a VIMEO site and you would have to pay a small fee to watch it. But I didn't hear what happened to that project.

Topper Madison said...

I think they're just going to evolve and independent theaters like Bowtie Cinemas will become the norm. I mean, who doesn't like a mimosa with a matinee?

Tina Mallette said...

Seeing movies at film festivals is an enjoyable experience once you got the tickets and wait in line to get in - TIFF has no prearanged seating it is run for it.

I do love the theatre experience when it is a play or musical production.

jane_heir said...

I miss going to movies. I pretty much stopped going post-2000. Up until that time movies were so affordable you could see everything and didn't mind seeing the stinkers, too. I just can't/won't shell out $20-$30 bucks (including the popcorn) to see a mediocre film. I don't know that even the good ones are even worth paying that much.

CoBe said...

I do remember the thrill of sneaking in a good sippy cup or two. That can't be duplicated at home!

Ditto to all above

Jason Blue Eyes said...

The reason Gravity was such a huge success was because it's promotion was largely comprised of the "you HAVE to see this on the big screen," model - which worked effectively. Christopher Nolan and Warner Bros. will be attempting a similar strategy with Interstellar next month. I expect that to be successful as well. And then of course, we have Star Wars next year.

What's also interesting is that when the analysts wrote all those "The end of moviegoing," articles a decade or so ago, they didn't anticipate the rise of the tweener girl audience - which just turned The Fault In Our Stars into a $300 million hit.

califblondy said...

I saw a West Side Story on the big screen and was amazed. I had only seen it on TV. I love going to the movies. Taking my two grands to a 3D is $50+. If it's a movie I really want to see I go alone. I don't wanna talk or have anyone close to me crunching popcorn or rattling candy wrappers. I made the early bird last week so it was $5.50 to get in and then $11 for popcorn and soda. And like I said the other day, the Jason Bateman movie sucked.

M. Brown said...

Either that or Adam Sandler will become a thing of the past.

Sea Hag said...

Some things are just better on a big freakin' screen. I loved Guardians of the Galaxy, and although I will buy the DVD I'm glad I saw it on the big screen first.

kelliknows said...

I hate the thought of no theatres, but have to admit it's been a couple of years since I've been to one. I also hate the thought of paying someone whose big investment is Sandler..yikes

AndrewBW said...

I go to the theater maybe once or twice a year. I'd love to go more often but I don't. Not because the theaters are crappy - we have some very nice theaters near us - but because the movies are. I'm not paying $10.50 or whatever the current fare is for some POS. F--- Hollywood.

auntliddy said...

Couldnt care less.

Michael said...

I only go to the theater for real big budget type movies like Godzilla. I hate the morons that ruin the experience by talking or texting during the movie. I have a 60 inch high def tv and will be getting a 70 inch in a year or so. I love watching movies in my house and especially love that I can drink or go to the bathroom whenever and however I want. Theaters are on the endangered list. Just a matter of time

Trilby said...

Yes. :(

Brian said...

With Sandler's decade-long string of commerical flops, I have to think that Netflix was his "studio" of last resort. After the failures this will churn out, he won't be able to get a deal for a used car commercial.

OKay said...

I'm fine with watching a movie at home, but I'd really miss the popcorn. I know it's ridiculously overpriced, but I love it that much. And seriously, you Americans only pay $8 for a movie???? I hate you all. LOL

Alexa Rose said...

They could be if they keep raising their prices.

Rome said...

How many bombs does he have left? I can't remember the last time a Sandler movie wasn't outright disgusting and insulting on every level. The Wedding Singer, maybe? Whatever, though. And hell no movies won't become a thing of the past. They're still cheap entertainment and seeing them in the dark in a huge room with other people is more fun than watching them at home.

They HAVE to keep my movie theatres- that's my "cover" when I go MIA for about 5 hours...read a review or two & I'm golden..

Groovy said...

I certainly hope so. I hate movie theaters. I always wait to watch movies at home. You can't pause the movie if you need to pee, the cost of soda of popcorn could cover a down payment on a home, you can't drink or smoke and there's always the chance you'll be shot by an old white dude for daring to text your babysitter.
