Blind Item #4

This former A list band is taking a break and using a medical excuse. No, it actually isn't because of drugs or booze, it is because of low ticket sales that are embarrassing to the point it is better to cancel shows than show up and see no one there.

Fall out Boy?

Blink182 just cancelled shows in vegas. Blood clots in arm's as the excuse.

You may be right. I saw band and read boy bander.

Ticket prices too high. Paying hundreds of dollars to watch some washed up has been miming to a backing track. Almost all live acts now use backing tracks in their 'live' performances nowadays. Even when I go watch a credible rock band most of them use backing vocal and drum tracks, fucking disgrace. The live nostalgia boom is probably coming to an end, which is good.

Lexi mY be right too-they touring too I think

Wonder if Blink 182 singers Whacky UFO conspiracy appearance on Rogan turned people off.

Looks like it was two of Blink182's twelve shows at the Palms Casino that got cancelled. Their tickets aren't exactly cheap but they're not in Tay Tay territory exactly.

Blink 182 was A list?
Didn't they have one awful song?

The Internet says concert prices have risen over the last 30-40 years even faster than college tuition or health care. I understand why -- concerts aren't loss-leaders for high-priced albums anymore. But you can't keep charging more for something that keeps dropping in quality, without something giving way. Come to think of it, that applies to all three.

I just read that Simple Minds is going on tour, no opening act. I wonder how they think they can manage that. They'd be better off on one of those 80s throwback tours or at least a double bill.
I'm not saying this is the guess cause the tour hasn't started. But it just seems like everyone's going to lose money on this.

Agree Barstool ...those great concert days are over . I dont even bother anymore .

I love the double bills. AM going to see Culture Club and the B52s next month.

@DO TELL - so jealous - they are coming to the east coast and I want to go!

Pumpkins I hope.

Shockingly, the pumpkins song is kinda good. This is blink 182.

Blink 182 is already known for not being very good at live shows (vocals are awful) so it's not surprising that no one wants to pay to see them.

Tom DeLonge is no longer part of Blink182, so the alien stuff has nothing to do with this. It may be that the absence of Tom DeLonge is what's causing this gig to stiff.

New vocalist Matt Skiba is an avowed satanist, so I'm glad to see them going down in flames.

In case you doubt me, here he is in the LA Times, as one of the "new generation" of satanists.

My preference is music festivals. Bonnaroo for example. Good bands playing good music.

I saw Cheap Trick at a tiny club in New Mexico, 150 people or so and it was fun. Unless they are The Rolling Stones that is what it comes to for pretty much every group.

Backing tracks are nothing new, lol. But insane ticket prices, on top of "service fees", insane concession prices (you want how much for a bottle of water?), parking fees, and the sheer balls of charging almost as much for a cheap, Chinese printed T-shirt as the ticket? Meanwhile, all of the good clubs are gone, or bought by ClearChannel or House Of Blues, and priced the fuck out.

But what do you expect? Every industry is like this now. $$$, yo. And idiots pay it. And it's correct - tickets used to sell albums - now albums sell tickets. Nobody buys albums, so to make money, bands have to charge more for tickets and t-shirts. It's all fucked up.

I remember when $20 would get me a ticket, a t-shirt, and a coke and a hot dog at a show, and I saw a LOT of bands when they'd come through in the summer. Now, there's less shows, that most people have to save up all year to get a ticket, the venues too big and sound like shit, and you need an extension on your credit lines to buy a shirt. IF that band comes through your town.

Besides, nobody goes to shows to hear the music anymore, they go so they can hold up their phone and brag about going on social media to all their friends who are too broke to go.

A very sad +1 to Unknown about the horribleness of the concert scene nowadays. I used to go to dozens of shows a year. I haven't been to a live show in about five years.

bekH said...

It depends on the performer. I just paid $175 to see Willie Nelson and it was worth every penny. I can guarantee there was no backtrack either.

Velora said...

We are definitely seeing the blowback from album sales being redistributed into ticket sales. I used to see a dozen or more live shows a year in my 20's, not including festivals and club gigs.

Hubby and I decided to take our kids to see FF this year. HA! First, you had to have a pre order code to even GET tickets the day they went on sale. If you weren't so lucky (like us), the secondary market (which is basically where bands are recouping the album sale losses) was the ONLY place to find more than 1 ticket together, unless you wanted gen adm. We ended up getting decent seats in the last row of a lower section on the left side of the stage.

For $250 each.

Back in the 90s, I remember paying $7 bucks for a seat on the lawn for THE DAVE MATTHEWS BAND at Meadowbrook Theatre in Rochester Hills, Michigan.

Those were the days.
We don't really go to live shows anymore.
Too bad, so sad... those days are over.

I`m old enough to remember how MEtallica blamed NAPSTER for ruining the music industry. I also remember the high prices of records as a teenager and how happy I was to have NAPSTER. Online music is awesome. I get everything I want for a fixed price from my APP. Best think ever! Yes I pay for music what I can afford. a reasonable price.

Hey musicians: Maybe you guys shouldn`t waste it all on Coke ,Hookers and fukcing gold cars or some other shit!
You`ll still make more money than most of us.
They deserve it for being greedy.

It's the prices. It's just that simple. People go to festivals instead.

@dotell
I'm going to see the B-52's and Culture Club (an Tom Bailey of Thompson Twins, SWOON) next month too! I've seen them both, but it's been 20 years...

1975, I paid a scalper $25 for third row centre at Maple Leaf Gardens to see Queen. And I paid $10 every year for the Rush NYE show, same venue.

@magnolia Concerts were so accessible then... I saw Billy Joel, Foreigner, Styx, many more and I was making minimum wage.
