Blind Item #6

The only reporters who will be allowed on this long long long time coming sequel's set will be reporters who will ask zero personal questions of the A+/A list lead actor of the movie. This is why he has filmed outside of the US for so long, because any answer he gives here in the States when asked the same question overseas will put him in a very hard to escape box which leads to more questions. I hope some reporter has the balls to ask the questions and then followup with more until the actor unplugs the microphone and walks off. No one will of course. They are all too worried about the actor not liking them or pretending they can call him a friend.

As Lester Bangs once said about rock stars, but applies to actors too, "These people are not your friends. These are people who want you to write sanctimonious stories about the genius of rock stars, and they will ruin rock 'n'' roll and strangle everything we love about it because they're trying to buy respectability for a form that is gloriously and righteously dumb."

Tom Cruise.. super disappointing. I hate that he’s letting himself be controlled by an organization that’s only stealing his money.

Asking about Suri would be my guess

I remember reading Lester Bang's pieces in Creem. That was a great magazine. "Boy Howdy!"

Almost Famous will
Never get old or those performances imo

Probably when was the last time he saw his damn daughter! Or anything about his “love life” and that cult he’s tied to

I’d class Tom Cruise as permanent A+

I loved Cream and Lester Bang!

Suri is better off without him while he's in that cult!

Based on what? I thought that required winning an Oscar or not jumping on Oprah's couch. He stopped being relevant in anything other than Mission Impossible suquels in the mid 90s.

Tom Cruise

Keanu Reeves and bill and Ted.

(Ha!)

Minority Report was a good movie, and highly relevant. 2002. Collateral was also not bad. 2004.

beebopcowboy said...

tom cruise will have to do SOME promo in the states, but he will probably go to softballers like Fallon or someone who will guarantee no $cio or 'how long has it been since you've seen Suri?' questions, haha

he's such a fool. he's a very dedicated actor, but he will go down history w/that being eclipsed by his abusive, crazy cult.

beebopcowboy said...

@nutty

dude, Im glad to know Im not the only one that thought that film was ahead of its time (minority report)

I actually think Collateral was the only role that came close to being oscar material for him 2000 & beyond.

Edge of Tomorrow was really good, 2014

Minority Report had so many stupid plot holes and such maudlin performancesI just can't begin to call it even respectable, on top of which was that famous Spielberg pomp and circumstance, ugh.

Collateral was great, however. Tom did alright there.

It could be Tom or Johnny Depp. Depp hasn't answered any questions about his marriage to Amber Heard and that debacle. Speaking of Depp, have you seen the photos of him out of Russia today? Pale, super thin, no face fuzz, looks like a girl. That could be good or bad. Maybe he is clean & sober for the first time in decades and we don't remember how he looked before all the drugs, babes and booze. I think he looks years younger in these shots. Impressions, anyone?

AJ Benza did a bit on Top Gun on his latest podcast (title is 'Can't Truss It")

Also why are they playing coy about the rest of the Top Gun: Maverick cast & story?

That is when I first really appreciated Phillip Seymour Hoffman's acting. Loved him as Lester Bangs and I still love that film.

BRILLIANT performance.
It's worth getting the director's cut (aka "Untitled") just for the extra PSH scenes.

Sara, Making It Work said...

@beebop, Corden is an asskisser too. He'd promote the shit out of it too. Do some pre-taped segments at the very least.

Wonder what kind of dirt they have on him?

+5 to everybody who gave a shoutout to Lester Bangs, the greatest rock critic of all time. His piece on Van Morrison's "Astral Weeks" album is a work of genius criticism worthy of the subject matter.

"Psychotic Reactions and Carburetor Dung," which compiles much of Bangs' best work, I don't know if it's still in print but if you can get it, it's fantastic.

As for Tom Cruise, I've really liked the last two M:I movies and it's one of the few summer movies I'm actually looking forward to. "Edge of Tomorrow" was also really good. He was the best thing about "Rock of Ages," not a good movie but he was good in it. "War of the Worlds"/"Collateral"/"Last Samurai" were a pretty entertaining string of quality films in the mid-2000s.

I never saw "Valkyrie" because the Nazi + Tom Cruise + Bryan Singer was too much for me. I've known about Singer for a long time and the only movies of his I've ever seen are "Usual Suspects" and "Superman Returns."

"American Made" was a disappointment, and "The Mummy" looked so bad I didn't go. I think he's one of the few movie stars left, but maybe he's not anymore. After staying ageless for so long, the fillers or surgery or whatever it is seem be catching up to him in the new M:I trailer.

Considering the $cio connection and some uglier rumors I've heard, he may well be among the worst of the worst, but I like him so much on screen my cognitive dissonance still insists on knocking my darkest doubts away.

TC is filming in Coronado Ca per local news. Guess its Topgun 2. Scio. has a big building in Downtown San Diego so I'm sure they will be keeping tabs on him.

Viking Song said...

Johnny Depp is playing a terminally ill man, Boo, in his next film. Yeah, he looks pale and a little on the skinny side, but other than that I think he looks fine.

J F said...

I'm not a big fan of his.... but, American Made was pretty decent I thought.

J F said...

Its been said that Val Kilmer will be cast as well. I love Val, but hows that going to work?? Cruise hasn't changed much, but Val time has certainly taken a juge toll on

butch said...

The only excellent tommy role was in Magnolia
Perfection
He played a total narcissistic ass

Love that film and Lester Bangs! And PSH.

Amy Casey said...

That he did but I must admit, Tom can act. I hate what he stands for in his personal life but he is a good actor. His Irish accent in Far and Away was dreadful though.

Boo Hearne said...

Viking: Thanks for the update. I think he looks ten years younger since he shaved the fuzz and got rid of the extensions. I hadn't heard about the upcoming role. Hope he is off the sauce. Always liked him a lot.

Boo Hearne said...

JF: Val Kilmer has had every opportunity in the world to get treatment since he discovered he was ill. He chose not to. We are all responsible for the choices we make in life. I have made some doozies, myself. He has been in my prayers for years. Hope he beats this.

TMN said...

Minority Report was a short story written by Philip K Dick. He was the one ahead of his time, not Tom Cruise.

Sara, Making It Work said...

@butch
I was just about to comment that! Leave it to PT Anderson to get the best performance and best role.

OK, I did like Jerry Maguire as well.

Viking Song said...

You're welcome, Boo, and me too. I think it's sad how Depp has become vilified when the majority that have met/worked with him have only positive things to say about him.

Aoife said...

Add me to "Minority Report" fandom. One of the best movies and wayyy ahead of its time. Yes the person who wrote the novel the film is based on was the one way ahead of his time but I wonder if the movie would even be made now.

Lester B was the greatest writer. And that means better than Meltzer, a close second.

Southern Man said...

Tommy. Into some very bad stuff that is a constant topic here. Total pro, but how do you think you become #1 star in the world for decades? First big break thru role: Risky Business- a David Geffen production.

You can't make this stuff up...

Scio is death/poison/totality of evil on earth. And of course, like anything else, there are good people caught up in it.

Xanadu said...

Just read an article in the daily mail about the three things a foreign inteviewer wasn't allowed to ask Tom Cruise. No surprises: scientology, Suri... can't recall the 3rd. Yawn.

Not a huge Tom fanboy but for a long time his name on the marquee was a guarantee of at least resonable quality. Whether that was due to TC himself or his agent or the $cio apparat I don’t know, but a lot of actors would do well to choose projects as carefully as he has.

NicQuerica said...

TC has been in some great movies. You guys mentioned alot of them but don't forget Born on the 4th of July. I think he was nominated for that. Hed a great actor,a true movie star in his day but fading fast. That scio cult is dragging him down to the depths. When a "church" tells you to cut off contact with your child and you go ahead and do it, you are completely lost to the sauce.
