netflix. the justice department told the academy they cannot exclude netflix from the oscars. spin on it speilberg.
Netflix, the DOJ has said that The Academy's possible plans to ban movies from screening services from being able to be nominated might be an antitrust violation.
Does that mean cable and tv movies can also win oscars? IDK, maybe it is better artistically to differentiate between proper cinema and TV/Device movies.
Gauloise-- Interesting question! Especially for pay cable companies like HBO. They probably never questioned the distinction of movie being cinema first release.

Combine this odious scenario with studios bullying theaters into showing only studio films. Where is an indie filmmaker to go? Thank you Spielberg!

Netflix has a point. If the studios don't like Netflix using lobbyist to buy off politicians, maybe they should try to overturn Citizens United. Tit for Tat.
I'd be curious how the DOJ has any authority to dictate what movies the Acadamy can nominate for its awards. Antitrust violations? As along as The Academy's not prevent Netflix from producing movies I don't see how there are any antitrust issues. It seems like a huge abuse of power from for any agency of government to interfere with a private organization's decision of how it hands out its awards.

The DOJ cannot withstand a court challenge if the DOJ did force the Academy to admit Netflix. The Oscars are for motion pictures shown in movie theaters. Netflix is more suitable for the Emmy awards for television presentations. Netflix movies are shown on televisions, not movie screens. Yes you can make the argument about the minimum screen time to allow a picture to be nominated. But the lions share of Netflix property is shown on TV screens. And if this ruling was passed then the movie producers could demand to be nominated for an Emmy award when that movie is shown on TV.

You have been told for months that Steven Spielberg basically controls the entire industry plus the police, so he can rape as many children as he wants, get people killed, etc. Yet, when he puts up his entire power on one target, Netflix easily gets the upper hand. Talk about being inconsistent, huh...
