Schoep The Dog Has Died

Last summer, Schoep and his owner made headlines around the world when the picture above was released. Schoep was extremely arthritic and could only find relief when his owner would swim with him in Lake Superior. According to John Unger, the dog's owner, Schoep died on Wednesday and John paid him tribute on his Facebook page with a photo of a paw in the sand.

No pain in doggy heaven RIP

As sweet as this story was, this dog was in a lot of pain when not in the water with his owner; As a pet parent, I'm glad that he is no longer suffering.

Glad you didn't include the Kardashians in this post.
I'm sure you're paid per mention.

RIP puppy dog.

Enty didn't, but you did!

^^^ The doggie dying will probably make much more sadder then if a Kardashian did.

Why is it that animals just know how to steal your heart ?This just crushes me and I'm actually am holding back tears. My "fur" baby is going on 10 this year and I just CAN'T imagine him not being there.
My heart goes out to his "Dad".
RIP sweet puppy.

Three years ago I lost my girl, 'Phoenix' to a heat-induced run off and subsequent fast driver( she was in heat and got out, hit by a car) there is not a day that goes by that I don't miss the hell out of that dog!!! She never left my side! Prayers for Shlepe and his daddy:)!

Sorry, Schoep

I don't believe in treating dogs as if they are humans, but I have more compassion when a dog passes than for most humans. I guess I'm a hypocrite like Fugazi Enty.

@count, it's called unconditional love! I never dressed her up, boxers don't do clothes, but she was a good girl!

Read a story this morning that said that all of the attention the photo got brought in donations that helped Schoep's last few months be a LOT less pain free. Got VERY teary reading that this morning. Sweet pup.

Yep, I teared up when I saw this on John's FB today. But Mr. Schoep is in no more pain, so we have to be relieved for that. RIP, buddy.

Somehow I got pulled into videos of dogs greeting their soldier owners when they returned home from deployment last night. I don't know how I got there because I didn't go searching for them on YouTube, but once I did, I was a bawling mess until I made myself step away from the laptop.

There's something so sweet and pure about the love and devotion of a pet, and I'm glad Schoep is out of pain too. I thought it was kinda cruel for the owner to keep him alive if the poor guy couldn't even sleep because he was hurting that badly, so I'm glad his last few months were more comfortable as a result of his story being made public.

My prayers go out to you. I lost one fur baby almost two years ago and one last year. I still miss them so much. Then along came two puppies into my life who were born in a shelter and well... just when I wasn't expecting it. These animals just find you!

this story so touched me when it came out and I was happy to hear donation made Schoep's life easier. The love of a pet is something all should experience. My two rescues (chewy is my avatar - but it's time for Jack to get some face time i think) make every day an adventure and my big boy Jack (anatolian shepherd/lab mix) tripped up the stairs yesterday and my heart sank... his hips are bugging him and he's only 8. Ugh - time to get more tissues.

Phillygrrl said...

In fairness to the owner, the whole thing with the pic started bc he was getting ready to put him down and asked his friend to take one last pic of them together before he passed; however, when the photog put the pic on Facebook and it went viral, more than $25k was donated to the owner who used the funds to provide daily laser, water and physical therapy which provided the pup with a considerably better quality of life - and the balance of the funds were used to start a foundation to benefit other pups in similar circumstances...so actually, the dog wasn't in agony or suffering like the story on the surface might suggest. Just wanted to put that out there for those who hadn't gotten the full story. :)

Thanks for that info @phillygrrl. And just because I love him - now my Jacky's my avatar.

Aww, thanks Pugster! Hugs back at ya! Sad, it was our second escape, hit and run! We had an adopted Weimaraner for three years before loosing her the same way. We adopted another boxer to fill the void and it helps but just isn't the same as my Phoenix:(
