Today's Blind Items

This actor is C list. He probably used to be B list. Not a very recognizable name, but you would definitely know the face. He has done a mixture of both television and movies. Every few years he gets a really great lead in a movie or television show, but nothing long lasting. He got his big break and the lead in his first movie because he blackmailed the producer of the movie, who was also an actor in the same movie and has a good guy reputation. The blackmail in question consisted of some photos our actor had taken at the party of the good guy producer/actor snorting coke. It doesn't seem like a big deal, but this producer/actor's entire career is based around his good guy reputation.

Tom Hanks has got to be the actor/producer, right?

littlemanwhatnow said...

i thought tom hanks as well...but would he say that the other guy is A list?

mooshki said...

Or not. He didn't start producing until relatively recently.

Moosefan said...

Could it be Ron Howard as the director? Not sure how the public would like to see Opie Taylor sniffin' the stuff.

littlemanwhatnow said...

matt damon? he's a wholesome good guy, right?

farmgirl said...

what about Kevin Costner? Doesn't he produce movies, too?

amazonblue said...

Checking IMDB, Hanks doesn't tend to produce vehicles he acts in, with the exception of Castaway. Not too many choices there except "Wilson".

crazycalimom said...

Long time lurker...
I think Moosefan got it. Ron Howard was the first name that popped into my head.

nancer said...

i wouldn't say costner has a squeaky clean image.
we're not talking a director here, but a producer. so good guy is both producer and actor.....now who could that be??

mooshki said...

Kevin Costner assaulted a masseuse. It sounds like this guy still has a good rep. If it's Opie, that makes it hard to find the other guy in the blind - he's produced way too many movies.

Myrlin A. Hermes said...

But has Ron Howard acted in any movies he's also produced? Aside from cameos, I can't find anything on imdb.

MontanaMarriott said...

Yeah but does Ron Howard act anymore?
I think George Clooney, he has produced several films. Still working on that actor....

farmgirl said...

but Costner did that relatively recently - if this tape was years ago . . . ? And he has produced 15 movies beginning in 1990.
Just sayin!

Cooper's Mom said...

Ron Howard was thefirst name that popped into my head too.... also Matt Damon came to mind but it's no secret that Damon was a wild party boy... maybe still is??

sunnyside1213 said...

Good point. He has produced 50 movies to date.

amazonblue said...

The guy producing the movie also acted in the same movie. Not Ron Howard, he hasn't acted since a Return to Mayberry TV movie in the '80's.

Matt Damon also doesn't produce and act in the same films.

Angela said...

Ron Howard today is director first, producer second and actor third. Since he started directing and producing, he has stopped acting (except some stuff like the narration on Arrested Development).

By the way, Henry Winkler was strictly a TV producer (except for Young Sherlock Holmes, but...)

Apparently, the producer/actor is not a director, so it's either a producer who acts from time to time (and there would be few of the) or an actor who has come to do some production, but hasn't turned into a director, except occasionally.

Ideas that spring to my mind would be some guy like Danny De Vito (produced Pulp Fiction, for instance) but it wouldn't be De Vito as he directed at least one hit movie, The War of Roses.

JaxSux said...

Will Smith is an actor and producer (i.e. Hitch) and thrives on his good guy rep....

dunno about the actor who blackmailed him though

nancer said...

costner hasn't had a goody two shoes image since he dumped his wife. not him. not damon. not howard. they don't fit.
clooney's rep as a good guy? i don't know about that either but i seriously doubt some tool holding a coke-snorting incident over his head would matter to him. his career wouldn't suffer very much over that.

Sue and Ed said...

Will Smith and Michael Rapaport. The common tie is that movie "Hitch."

Unknown said...

My first thought was Tom Hanks and Tom Everett Scott - but apparently Tom Hanks did everything BUT produce That Thing You Do. Which is fortunate 'cause I think I like Tom Everett Scott.

Mika said...

Brad Pitt has the good guy reputation and he's an actor/producer

amazonblue said...

How about Adam Sandler? He's produced a lot of his own stuff. His reputation is fairly decent.

gillian said...

Jim Carrey Ben Stiller Sandra Bullock Drew Barrymore Mel Brooks Tom Cruise Michael Douglas Mel Gibson Jared Leto Tyler Perry Adam Sandler: all have producer/actor credits. Whether they are "good guys" (or "guys") is open to interpretation.

FrenchGirl said...

steve zahn and matthew Mc Conaughey in the movie Sahara?because Mc Conaughey is the executive productor in this movie, has a good guy reputation and Zahn is a C list

Anonymous said...

McConaughey who played bongo drums naked on his lawn? I would be surprised if he DIDN'T snort the occasional something.

Too bad Judd Apatow doesn't act in his own movies, he would've fit the good guy image.

Anonymous said...

Oh! Forgot to say my guess. I'm thinking: producer = Steve Martin, actor = Jason Schwartzman, movie = Shopgirl

Audrey said...

I like the Steve Martin guess, but what about Tyler Perry? He definitely seems to have a good boy reputation. From what I've heard, he's all about family and god.

farmgirl said...

Jason Schwartzman was around way before Shopgirl - as was Michael Rappaport and the rest of the actors you guys are guessing. I will come off the Costner guess, but don't think anyone else has nailed it either.

FrenchGirl said...

or Sam rockwell and georges Clooney on "Confessions of a dangerous mind" ? Clooney played and producted this movie !after this movie,Rockwell just had tinies characters before again worked well!

Brit Brit said...

Giovani Rabisi...???

David D. said...

Mel Gibson/Jim Caveziel?

d said...

I read this as, the actor's *first* big break. This would rule out Schwartzman, Zahn,Rapaport.

You know what does work? Steve Martin as the actor/producer, the movie is the Three Amigos, and the C list actor is Martin Short. It was Martin's first movie credit.

CM said...

Did I read this wrong? ENTY wrote Not a very recognizable name. All of these guys definitely have recognizable names. Ron Howard. Costner. Hanks. Damon.

I thought of Ron Howard too for first thought, but then the not very recognizable name, unless a play on his name, has me stumped.

CM said...

nancer said...

you read it wrong. it's the c list actor who's name is not that recognizable but his face is---not the actor/producer.

Unknown said...

Ron Howard. Colm Meaney. "Far and Away."

littlemanwhatnow said...

i like that martin short guess...but i,m not sure..he is probably not a c

L said...

Tom Everett Scott for the actor, Tom Hanks for the producer (because That Thing You Do was a Paly Tone movie production, and Play Tone = Tom Hanks).

Tom Everett Scott has been in a load of shows as the lead but they all crap out in the ratings.

Unknown said...

Ooh, thanks L, I just couldn't shake that guess! For what it's worth, Zahn also got his break in That Thing You Do.

Short's a good guess too, but I think people know him by name.

Kathy K said...

Steve Carrell for the producer/actor.

Romany Malco for the actor.

d said...

I think Tom Everett Scott fits the clues, but I don't recognize his face. Plus I couldn't see in imdb where he gets "great leads" every few years. But maybe that's just because I didn't see those movies/tv shows.

Amanda said...

No way on the Martin Short guess- all the Three Amigos guys know each other from Saturday Night Live. I donKt think many people would be surprised to know Steve Martin did coke considering his SNL past and his frantic standup.

d said...

Amanda - you're right...scratch the Martin Short guess.

Denis Stearns said...

I like the Sam Rockwell guess.

sassenach said...

William Fichtner Actor/Producer= George Clooney

Natalie said...

Steve Zahn- Ben Stiller (good guy) Movie- Reality Bites

BAM!

LauraM said...

NatalieSF, I don't know if Ben Stiller is considered a "good guy", he kind of has a reputation and wouldn't be surprised if he inhaled his breakfast, lunch and dinner in powder form. My guess for the director is Kevin Smith. Can't think of the actor as of this moment. But then again, Kevin is more of a director actor. I like the Tyler Perry guess, though.

figgy said...

Here's what I don't get: why would being caught snorting coke be such a big deal? Can't someone snort coke and still be a "good guy"? It's not like they said he was sexually abusing baby seals.

ardleighstreet said...

Laura
We think alike but Kev doesn't have a squeaky image. I think it's Tim Olyphant (I hope I'm wrong)
as actor and Kevin Smith director.

nancer said...

this is what i don't get---i'm not shocked at anyone snorting coke, especially in hollywood. and i can't imagine it would matter to the guy in the photographs to this extent unless maybe he's known for being adamantly anti-drug or religious.

stiffkittens said...

After reading his blog 'diary' of what happened with Jason Mewes (and his major drug issues), i'd be very surprised if this was Kevin Smith.

IIRC he is anti-hard drugs (as well as being anti-smoking), and is also a devoted catholic family man - not that that has stopped people before.

I hope Tim Olyphant wouldn't blackmail someone for a job. He's a very good looking fellow :)

Besides, they worked on Catch and Release together, so there can't be too much bad blood (it's not like they would have been turning down an Oscar winning film if one of them stepped down).

morganmorgan said...

Nice Guy = Paul Newman

Produced/acted in = Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969)

B/C actor who made his movie break = Sam Elliott

Unknown said...

I think we can consider Ben Stiller to be a little bit "squeeky clean"- he's done a lot of projects lately for children- Night at the Museum, Madagascar, Nickelodeon Kid's Choice awards...all that stuff.

Reality Bites was Zahn's first big mainstream feature with some serious talent- he is an odd addition to big starts like Ethan Hake, Winona Ryder, etc.

or as producer/actor with a good guy reputation could be Tom Cruise! i know all rumours on him but he's a real good guy reputation (no drug,no alcohol)he's a scientologist after all!
i would be shocked if i will see photos of him snorting colombian candy!

Unknown said...

Has to be Tom Hanks - only because only someone snorting something would have the hair he had in "da vinci code"

;)

Unknown said...

Mark Feuerstein for the B-lister, Sandra Bullock for the producer/actor and Practical Magic for the film. Go Mandra!

Unknown said...

LOL. I didn't recognize the name above mine.

Hanks is an alcoholic. As someone with friends at Gold Circle, Hanks can be great or impossible depending on how 'wet' he is--and its bad when he's dry.

But coke + alc = bloat.

slappywhyte said...

I immediatly thought of Denzel for the good guy actor/producer.

crila16 said...

John Favreau. He produces and acts in his movies.

figgy said...

Hanks is an alcoholic?? Now THAT is sad. And he's bad when he's dry? Wow. THAT is the kind of insider gossip that's so interesting to hear!

crila16 said...

It also can't be Ron Howard. He doesn't act anymore. He only Directs...and also only works with big name actors. The Producer (NOT DIRECTOR) in question also acts in his movies.

doxie said...

I think Syndney Pollack - he's a producer first, actor second. He produced Michael Clayton. There's a guy named Michael O'Keefe who had one of the starring roles - despite primarily doing TV guest work.

Impertinent Vixen said...

I like the Jon Favreau guess but he's a producer AND a director; wouldn't Enty have mentioned that?

I don't think this blind is as far back in time as Sam Elliott/Paul Newman. Elliott's role as "Card Player #2" would hardly qualify as a big break.

Impertinent Vixen said...

doxie, Pollack is a good guess but Michael O'Keefe was on the scene long before Michael Clayton in movies: He was in the Great Santini and Caddyshack and has been acting since 1975.

Impertinent Vixen said...

AND O'Keefe was married to Bonnie Raitt for a long time. He's a known name.

K said...

And, alas, the great Sydney Pollack died last year - cancer.

This entry suggests that the good guy/producer is still around.

Unknown said...

I think Tom Everett Scott/Tom Hanks is the best guess. Remember, the role the C-list actor had was a LEAD. Not supporting lead, but lead. Scott is the only one suggested that truly fits this blind imho.

And Hanks was never known for drugs, so a coke picture around the time of his back-to-back Oscars would have been a scandal. Remember, this was before the Lohans, Hiltons, and other Hollwood snots made coke mainstream in the press.

Greg Wroblewski said...

Jason Bateman and Will Smith?

MEP said...

Denzel is not a bad guess - what about Derek Luke as the actor, with Antwone Fisher being the movie? He had only done a few episodes of King of Queens and Moesha before then. Since then he's done Friday Night Lights, Glory Road, Madea goes to Jail and plays P Diddy in Notorius. . . . . You might not recognize his name but perhaps his face.

I would say Denzel has a fairly "good guy" reputation.

lmnop123 said...

I agree Denzel has a good guy reputation but he's really fat for someone who snorts coke.

Have you noticed his big gut?

J said...

Denzel is a notorious cheater, hardly a good guy

It sounds like Tyler Perry but there are so many things to bribe him with, lol, coke seems minor!

Could the actor be Allen Payne?

This is a tough one

tundrahdesert said...

Brendan Fraser, Harrison Ford is my guess

Unknown said...

NONONONONO! it IS tom hanks, but the actor is Gary Sinese who is now on TV on CSI:NY

Greg Wroblewski said...

Sinese sounds exactly like the description, so Sinese and Hanks could fit perfectly, except that
Hanks was not a producer on Apollo 13 or Forrest Gump.

Unknown said...

tom everett scott...'that thing you dp'...he's now in southland and starred in 'that thing you do' with hanks (who also produced the movie). has to be it.

Greg Wroblewski said...

Hanks is not listed as a producer in That Thing You Do. He did write and direct the film.

Angela said...

Sinise had a career long before Gump. He was a stage actor and director and even made a movie adaptation of "Of Mice and Men" co-starring his good friend John Malkovich.

Martin Short? Have you heard about SCTV? "Three Amigos" was his first movie role but he was in the same show as John Candy, Rick Moranis, Eugene Levy, Catherine O'Hara and a few other great ones. The movie was actually written (like Ghostbusters) with John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd in mind but due to John's death, Aykroyd backed out.

gillian said...

Tom Everett Scott for the actor, Tom Hanks for the producer (because That Thing You Do was a Play-Tone movie production, and Play-Tone = Tom Hanks)And yet IMDb does not list any Play-Tone film productions before 2000. It lists Play-Tone for Soundtrack Publisher for TTYD. Tom Hanks is credited as Director, Writer, and with writing some of the songs. (loved Mr. Downtown!)

There are four producers listed for TTYD and Tom Hanks is not one of them. His first executive producer credit was in 1998.

gillian said...

Run-on paragraph!

Mic said...

Tracy Morgan
Lorne Michaels

Karmen said...

Can't be Tracy Morgan/ Lorne Michaels.

It says movie, not TV show. Tracy first became famous from SNL.

I keep hearing stories all week about what a good guy Hugh Jackman is...then it struck me...Hugh Jackman...Lieb Schrieber....(yes, I'd consider Wolverine his big break). And he's done TV and film. And supposedly they are friends (which is the best way to get video footage of someone doing something)
