Kate Middleton Is The Most Random Grocery Shopper Ever

Do you get the feeling that Kate Middleton goes grocery shopping to make us think that she is still trying to be all normal, or that she really goes because she has to? It is pretty obvious that she rarely goes grocery shopping or else there would be photos of her everyday in magazines doing just that. Also, if she is doing all the grocery shopping, then she really needs to step up the buying of groceries because 8 items are not going to last you long. Of course she is really skinny and the 8 items she bought would probably last some actresses in Hollywood at least two weeks, but there would have also been a carton if cigarettes added to the mix and a stop off at their coke dealer on the way home. Probably a vodka bottle or two too. Dieter's drink of choice.

Kate bought chicken, milk, potatoes, oranges, cereal, Haagen-Dazs and lettuce. Because I go food shopping so much, I have become an expert on what people plan to do with their food.

Kate was making chicken with potatoes and a salad for dinner with ice cream for dessert. For breakfast she was going to have cereal and an orange. So, I get the fact that maybe she gave the cook the night off or whatever, but you can't tell me they did not have these things at their house so it gets back to is she doing this to keep people thinking she is connected to them? Misses it? With that turtleneck was she cold? Covering up hickeys?

Enty, haven't you ever decided that what you want for dinner is something you don't have in the house, and you have to go buy the ingredients? Oh, wait. I forgot who I was talking to.

I go to the store lots of times for 8 items. Lot's of people do. That's why they even have their own checkout line for 10 items or less.

I don't see anything strange about her purchases. Also, I don't think they have a cook. The papers said they are forgoing a staff to have some privacy. As far as the turtleneck, it is November in England. I believe she wore it because it was chilly outside.

I'm with y'all that think she really did pick up those items for dinner. I had also read they don't have staff, so I can see her doing this.

She obviously doesn't HAVE to go do the grocery shopping if she doesn't want to. I think she is probably trying her best to retain a sense of normalcy in her life.

Also, at least her items show plans to make a completely normal dinner. It's not like she went to the store and picked up Haagen Dazs and a pack of rolling papers. Although that would have been a whole lot funnier!

Oh my god Maja, I was eating an apple when I read your comment and now I have to clean my monitor.

I love her sweater (I love turtlenecks).

People judging what was in my shopping basket was a paralyzing fear of mine when I had an eating disorder. I can't imagine what kind of pressure she's dealing with, even if she doesn't have a serious eating problem.

I must still be asleep because I fail to see the reason for this post....I agree with Maja.

Me too. I buy something fresh everyday because I can walk to local stores and I don't always plan meals ahead for the man and the sisterwife (roomie). Making the Green Bean casserole for T'giving and I had to ask where the canned veggies were. I rarely buy them.

When I lived in England I would walk to the supermarket every other day. It was nice to be able to never have to use my car (except for work).

Why is she still being referred to as Kate Middleton? That is not her name anymore. She is now the Duchess of Whateveritis.

Enty, you're obviously a cranky bastard in the morning. Dissecting a (pretty standard) grocery list & a turtleneck? Jesus, have a coffee and wait a couple hrs before posting.

mikey said...

^^ I guess that's why she's referred to as Kate Middleton still - Whateveritis is difficult to type.

I just bought a pie, whipped cream, and broccoli. Dinner anyone?

I agree with the others. I now live by myself so I rarely do major grocery shopping. My grocery store is right on the way home from work so I just usually pop in and pick something up.

I think it is cute that you guys believe the whole "they don't have staff". Considering they were caught trying to hire staff and had to rescind the employment post. However, I shop like this all the time, because I sometimes miss a few ingredients or I am in the mood for a specific thing. Ice cream being one of them.

Food in England is different than in Canada and the US. I worked in London for five weeks. I went to the Waitrose and bought 50 pounds worth of groceries only to take it home and realize it was all set to expire within a couple of days.

And yeah, I never do large grocery shops either. And I'm always terrified of people judging what's in my basket. Whenever my husband and I grab a box of Pogos (corn dogs to the American readers), we always say out loud, "the kids love 'em." We don't have kids. We just eat bad.

I agree with you guys but I dunno, I could see her doing this to be seen as a more common everyday person and it definitely has a relatability factor in the very action of shopping without staff to assist her.

I think Enty's point is if you dont ever see pics of her shopping and then ONCE she shops for such small items, it's almost like a staged photo op or something.

Remember this is the woman (and i dont necessarily blame her for this) who had a story recanted about her regarding a gossip rag's assumption she was wearing a wig in a close up picture of her hair. The royal house actually issued a statement about it being an old scar or something.

In short, this woman is a lot more conscious about her image and how it's projected than some people may realize.

I could definitely see her doing this simply to ascertain she is a woman of the people. Not such a bad thing for her to do but defintely a little manipulative.

Also, I think it's hilarious that most American bloggers and gossip mags still refer to her as Kate Middleton- i figured it began at least as a silly American way to not give too much attention to royal titles- as we dont have em here. It's also funny because this is the future Queen of England and she is still referred to by her maiden name--the sheer gall of this is awesome.

This isn't the first time she's been pictured grocery shopping. And the whole set of pictures shows a full shopping cart, far more than just 8 items.

What's up Enty? You're getting really sloppy lately. Commenting on the basis of just one photo?

Like earlier when you snarked on Kristen Stewart wearing sneakers to walk during the Breaking Dawn premiere. That was because she hurt her ankle during filming for Snow White and the Huntsman. I hate that I know that, but it was on one of those Hollywood tv news shows.

And earlier this summer during the Larry Crowne premiere when you said no one was there. I was actually at Grauman's Chinese Theater that day and there were plenty of people. Definitely not empty.

Anyway, been reading for years and I hardly ever comment, but new Enty seems to be way more careless about details these days.

I also agree with a lot of you all but I think @jasmine said it the best.

I think it is endearing for her to be shopping for their groceries. I also read where they do not have a large household staff, if at all. This woman will be photographed no matter what she does or when etc. She seems well grounded and down to earth and I like that.

Don't they go to a lot of royal events - dinners, lunches, etc for charities, etc? They probably just don't eat at home much.

Was this photo taken near their home in Wales or wherever William is stationed right now? It's got to be freakin cold there right now. They have minimal staff there, I think its four plus a rotation of security guards. She likes to cook, she probably likes to do her own shopping sometimes too.

I know we're all supposed to care about the Royals, especially since that splashy wedding that was everywhere, but I just don't.

I love that this chick shops at Tesco. Good for her!! Do you think Betty would have clue one as to WHERE to find a pint of milk in Tesco? Would she dare drink milk from tesco and not fortnum and Mason? Would she know how to use a debit card to pay for it?

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge -- Kate and Wills to their friends -- live in a rented cottage on the island of Anglesey, which is off the north coast of Wales and hella cold in November.
They do not really have staff in Wales. They may have a Welsh "daily," someone who comes in and cleans, but that isn't really considered staff.
Granted, the "cottage" they live in isn't the two-roomer we typically think of as a "cottage," but it is not large. It is on the grounds of a larger estate. Their security detail lives in another cottage nearby on the same estate.
I hate, hate, hate going to the grocery store, so I try to get everything I will need for the next couple of weeks while I am there. I could never live in Europe, where people shop at least every couple of days. Whenever I visit family across the pond I'm always amazed at how little it bothers them to go buy food every.damn.day. And I've seen lots of photos of Kate shopping at her local Sainsbury's grocery store -- enough to believe that she really does do the grocery shopping herself.

Hickeys, yeah, that's it.

I enjoyed that, Enty

i agree with texshan. having lived in wales, i can tell you it's bloody cold and damp at this time of year. many of the houses over there don't have the massive fridges that we have in the states, so most people do a shop every day or so.

Anonymous said...

Yeah, Pigtown, what is up with the dorm fridges in Europe? Seriously, people's fridges are the same size as the one I had in my dorm room. How do they even get a pint of ice cream in the freezer? Or a family-sized frozen dinner? It's impossible! And why does everyone have a washer/dryer combo (if they are lucky enough to have one at all) in the kitchen? I don't get it.

Tempestuous Grape said...

Can you imagine people critiquing what you buy to eat at home?? How bizarre!

lunabelle said...

So what is her last name? Windsor??

Anonymous said...

Their fridges are small because their food doesn't keep as long as it does in Canada and the US. You can't buy a month's worth of food because everything fresh will spoil within a couple of days. I assume it's less preservatives but that's just an assumption.

I've seen a whole bunch of pictures of her shopping, so it isn't a rare thing at all. I think even if you've got staff, you might like to do for yourself every now and then. I sometimes find household chores relaxing, I just wish I didn't always have to do them. :)

Seriously, "Enty"? This is your idea of an interesting post? Really? Either it's a slow gossip day or your standards are dropping like a rock.

Mango said...

@Jasmine - I think we refer to her as Kate Middleton because we can't remember her title, we don't care about titles, and we know we're not supposed to call her Princess Kate.

I think she probably really does shop and cook, especially in Wales, and I agree she is very conscious of image and doesn't want to appear flashy or ostentatious. Why, she even *gasps* wears the same dress more than once!

mooshki said...

Exactly, Mango. I still don't know why we can't call her Princess - it would make it so much easier.

Lunabelle, the royal family has no official last name, they are just members of the House of Windsor. However, when they were at school and now in the military, William and Harry both use the last name "Wales." Other members of the royal family use the last name "Windsor," which was adopted by the family in the days right before WWI because their previous name was German.
Let's hear it for my British history minor, finally paying off!
