Yeah, Adele has had vocal issues, and she has only had one hit album, which was a huge hit.
I first thought Lourde, but isn't she only 17? Is that old enough to have "years" of smoking behind you?

Adele needed a break for two reasons—throat surgery and pregnancy. Following microsurgery on a damaged vocal cord in 2011, she was advised to quit smoking, but Adele said that smoking was her favorite thing to do in the world.

I have Duffy's album Rockferry loved it and wondered what happened to her.
Could very well be Adele. First album was not the big hit that the second one was, and the second one only really had "Rolling In The Deep" as a first single to thank for that. Everything else was "wahh" and blah. Whoever stated above that she had a rough Oscar performance was right. Completely lackluster. It looked ridiculous that she was so acclaimed and then right after Jennifer Hudson (who I don't particularly care for, either) came out and brought the house DOWN with amazing powerhouse vocals. Adele's voice isn't nearly as great as everyone has been brainwashed to believe and it was SUPER obvious that night. Great personality, I'm sure...it just irritates me how her voice is so revered. Nowhere near as good a singer, writer or producer as Amy Winehouse, even.
I have problems with my vocal cords and I have smoked a couple cigarrettes, about five cigars and about ten joints in my life. She is smart for keeping what makes her happy instead of changing it for something not knowing for sure the source of her pain.
It sucks if this is Adele, her voice is so beautiful.
As for Duffy, I've read rumors of heroin addiction, also on this site.

Alanis. Only hit album was the mega selling Jagged Little Pill. All of her other albums have been flops.
