Blind Item #1 - Night At The Theatre - A Reader Blind Item

Here's one from memory lane:

This story begins with a specific date and time: the night of October 15, 1993. The setting is a theater in mid-town Manhattan - one with an educational name.

On this night, the procurer for the foreign-born headlining act had to do double duty. Normally tasked with rounding up barely legal fans of one sex for the after party, he was now tasked with finding barely legal fans of both sexes.

The reason was the front man for the second opening act. This band had recently been signed to a major label bearing the founder's name. The singer had been on tv performing someone else's song at an awards show, and one or two of their songs were getting airplay. In his mind, he was already a big star, and deserved this service too, so it was added as a secret rider.

The trouble the procurer was having was that the billing was a mismatch. The headlining act played a kind of music beloved by kids in black, and this other band was more influenced by earlier, classic ones - including that one with the most generic name. More or less everyone in attendance was there to see the main act, and basically no one had heard yet of this other band - including the young people he was trying to lure backstage. They all wanted to meet the other singer. And they just weren't his type.

He ended up having to call in a favor to a talent agent he knew, who supplied him with roughly a dozen barely legal models and actresses to play the part of screaming fans. Apparently they succeeded, because even when the young women couldn't name a single song by the band he just thought they were drunk, or something.

But the singer was right about something. Over the next year, the band would become A list, selling out much larger venues than the headlining act would ever play. There's one song though that never made the cut off the debut album, which also has the album's title. In the song the singer predicts his own downfall, basically declaring himself a martyr for his conduct.

Within a few years, the main collaborator for the other singer would leave the band. It was in part the proverbial creative differences, but also because of what he accused the singer of being. If this blind was about a show for the follow-up record, you might - because of its ambition, and echoes of those beloved/hated often double-record outings in the 70s - have called it a Night at the Opera.
Extra points for getting the words to the second singer's song/confession. It was recorded at a later date.

So Suede was the foreign-born headlining band?

With fanbois, I take it? I could see that.

90s music was an absolute wasteland, as far as bands are concerned, unless you liked Seattle grunge

Sara, Making It Work said...

So to sum up, Suede was into barely legal guys, and Adam Duritz of Counting Crows was into barely legal (preferably non legal) females, which caused a rift in the band. He later wrote a song about it. Because he's deep.
Did I get it all?

Also, Duritz has an unwarranted ego. But we already knew that one.

Btw, whatever happened to Suede?

More Cowbell said...

So the Counting Crows was the band who wanted the boys backstage?

@Cowbell - Counting Crows wanted underage/barely legal girls. The singer of Suede wanted the boys

Ghost said...

It doesn't say that the boys were for the lead singer of Suede. Just that they were for the after party.

Velobwoy said...

90's music was the motherlode, if you liked amazing indie bands.

Poor Mick said...

Suede is also still doing albums; "Night Thoughts" was actually really incredible. A lot of the same bombast, but about growing older and being a family man. Hopefully the backstage antics have calmed some over the last 25 years; not that I have any actual knowledge on it, but he seems like he's in a way better place by every measure.

Now! said...

The drummer of Suede, Simon Gilbert, was always openly gay and known as a party type.

The singer, Brett Anderson, talked about being a "bisexual man who has never had a homosexual experience" but was always publicly paired with women, and is now married to a woman.

I believe the other two members - Brett Butler and Matt Osman - were straight, but I'm not sure.

Now! said...

LOL Bernard Butler - not Brett Bulter, the 90s comedienne.

This was written by a very, very smug bastard who thinks they're the smartest person in the room.

"90s music was an absolute wasteland, as far as bands are concerned, unless you liked Seattle grunge"

Excuse me????

Even the pop music of the 90s was amazing and Rap was awesome as well. It was a watershed decade that sadly deflated into the computer generated songs, raps and lyrics we have today. I dare you to listen across the huge swath that was 90s music, before the studios wanted predictable results based on algorithms and auto-tuned voices, to reassess your opinion there.

Allahu akbar, subhanallah!
I was thinking of doing an exegesis on "Mr. Jones" the other day. Here you go!

I was down at the New Amsterdam, staring at this yellow haired girl (I was in the New World coveting that which is not mine)
Mr. Jones strikes up a conversation with a black haired flamenco dancer (Satan speaks with an ominous woman)
Now she dances like her father plays guitar, she's suddenly beautiful (Her line has made the deal with the devil, as in the House of Aragon, the court of blood)
We all want something beautiful, man I wish I was beautiful. (My covetousness has cursed me before Allah, Satan answer my call)

So come dance the silence down through the morning (I feel Allah's absence in my Satyrnalia)
Sha na na na na na na, yeah, uh huh, yeah (gematria, 13 syllables, a Qabbalistic invocation of Iblis)
Cut up with Maria, show me some of that Spanish dancing, pass me a bottle, Mr. Jones (The Vatican hordes its secrets in ties of blood, Loyola of the Jesuits was a marrano, Saturn of the Revolution will shatter their grasp, pass me a Molotov/more booze Satan)
Believe in me, help me believe in anything, because I want to be someone who believes, yeah (O Saturn I envy the faith of the Muslim, those who are slaves only to Allah, grant me that which I lack in my heart or tradition)
Mr. Jones and me (satanic Freemasonry)
Stare into the future (divination is haram)
And we stare at the beautiful women (we lust and envy, like Mani the wronged servant, or Iblis the angel cast from Hannah for his pride)
She's looking at you, I don't think so, she's looking at me (how shall we corrupt them to suit our our needs)
Standing in the spotlight, coming through in stereo (Satan amplify my message)
When everybody loves me, you can never be lonely (a hollow assertion against Allah)

Well I wanna paint my picture (Let me leave an eternal testament to myself)
Paint myself in blue, red, and black, and gray
All of the beautiful colors are very very meaningful (color combinations often carry strong occult connotations)
Yeah well you know GRAY IS MY FAVORITE COLOR (I declare myself a gnostic, a disciple of Iblis. Saturnic Freemasonry has strong Luciferian/Promethean overtones)
I felt so symbolic yesterday (I perform the mysteries of Saturn)
If I knew Picasso, I would buy myself a gray guitar and play (Picasso was in on this too and I testify this before you)

Mr. Jones and me, tell each other fairy tales (this cabal has told you stories of the fey for ages)
And stare at the beautiful women
She's looking at you, oh no no, she's looking at me (we will unify Masonry[MAZR] under the Talmud)
Standing in the spotlight, I bought myself a gray guitar (my pact with Satan complete I perform my role)
When everybody loves you, you can never be lonely. (I lie to myself as I serve the Lord of Lies)

August and Everything After sold 10 million copies. It takes art and craft to turn self-absorption into platinum sales – the record married Duritz’s introspecive melancholy lyrics with instantly catchy melodies that invoked everyone from the Band and the Eagles to Springsteen and Van Morrison. Like their label-mates Nirvana, Counting Crows’ music had that fashionably Nineties strain of self-loathing, but unlike their grunge contemporaries the music was sufficiently joyful not to provoke either the listener or the singer to suicide.

August made Duritz hugely famous – his face was on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine and fans camped out on his lawn. “Becoming famous made it a big issue being me,” he recalls. “I couldn’t talk to anyone any more.”

He moved to Los Angeles and became friends with Johnny Depp, who co-owned the Viper Room, the nightclub that would become notorious for being where River Phoenix died.

“The Viper Room has this reputation because of River, but to me it was what I imagine the Left Bank to have been like,” says Duritz. “There were so many artists and musicians hanging out – I met William Burroughs and Allan Ginsberg, Tom Petty was around, the Hughes brothers had just made Menace 2 Society. Johnny knew all these people.”

The sacred geometry of chance

The numbers lead a dance
I know that the spades are the swords of a soldier
I know that the clubs are weapons of war
I know that diamonds mean money for this art
But that's not the shape of my heart
He may play the jack of diamonds
He may lay the queen of spades
He may conceal a king in his hand
While the memory of it fades
I know that the spades are the swords of a soldier
I know that the clubs are weapons of war
I know that diamonds mean money for this art
But that's not the shape of my heart
That's not the shape
The shape of my heart
If I told her THAT I LOVED YOU (Saturn)
You'd maybe think there's something wrong
I'm not a man of too many faces
The mask I wear is one
But those who speak know nothing
And find out to their cost
Like those who curse their luck in too many places
And those who fear are lost
I know that the spades are the swords of a soldier
I know that the clubs are weapons of war
I know that diamonds mean money for this art
But that's not the shape of my heart
That's not the shape of my heart

Time... rolling along with the waves,
A thousand miles away
Holding you close in the rain,
Seems just like yesterday

Lost... hope in a faraway place
And in my hand remains,
A black and white print of a face,
I'll never see again

I gave my life to save her
The ocean turned to red
In the fall, in the fall, when the tide took them all
Cut down like lambs at slaughter,
Good men were left for dead
In the fall, in the fall, when the tide took them all

Love... served until death do us part,
I'm drifting in the dark
Wounded and wishing to fall,
Into your faithful arms

I gave my life to save her
The ocean turned to red
In the fall, in the fall, when the tide took them all
Cut down like lambs at slaughter,
Good men were left for dead
In the fall, in the fall, when the tide took them all

Beneath the sky of hate,
Beyond the sea of pain,
In heaven I will wait,
Until we meet again

I gave my life to save her
The ocean turned to red
In the fall, in the fall, when the tide took them all
Cut down like lambs at slaughter,
Good men were left for dead
In the fall, in the fall, when the tide took them all

The signs are all turning right

Do you want me to try?
Directing your night
Want me to try
Directing your life

Now, time for me is nothing 'cause I'm counting no age
Now I couldn't be there
Now you shouldn't be scared
I'm good at repairs
And I'm under each snare
Intangible
Bet you didn't think so I command you to
Panoramic view
Look I'll make it all manageable
Pick and choose
Sit and lose
All you different crews
Chicks and dudes
Who you think is really kickin' tunes?
Picture you gettin' down in a picture tube
Like you lit the fuse
You think it's fictional?
Mystical? Maybe
Spiritual
Hero who appears in you to clear your view when you're too crazy
Lifeless
To those the definition for what life is
Priceless
To you because I put you on the hype shit
You like it?
Gun smokin' righteous with one toke

I got sunshine in a bag
I'm useless but not for long
The future is coming on
I ain't happy, I'm feeling glad
I got sunshine in a bag
I'm useless but not for long
The future (that's right) is coming on
It's coming on
It's coming on
It's coming on

The essence the basics
Without did you make it
Allow me to make this
Child-like in nature
Rhythm
You have it or you don't that's a fallacy
I'm in them
Every sprouting tree
Every child of peace
Every cloud and sea
You see with your eyes
I see destruction and demise (that's right)
Corruption in disguise
From this fuckin' enterprise
Now I'm sucked into your lies
Through Russel, not his muscles but percussion he provides
For me as a guide
(Say what)
Y'all can see me now 'cause you don't see with your eye
You perceive with your mind
That's the inner
So I'mma stick around with Russ and be a mentor
Bust a few rhymes so motherfuckers remember where the thought is
I brought all this
So you can survive when law is lawless (right here)
Feelings, sensations that you thought was dead
No squealing, remember that it's all in your head

His movie credits include classics such as "Pretty Woman" and "JFK," as well as recent Oscar winners "The Revenant" and "12 Years a Slave." But his back story reads more like an espionage thriller that has landed him at the center of a scandal shaking the Israeli government.

The latest chapter in the strange saga of Israeli billionaire and veteran film producer Arnon Milchan arose last week over accusations that he — in Hollywood mogul fashion — gave thousands of dollars worth of cigars and champagne to Israel’s prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, and his wife.

Israeli police Thursday interrogated Netanyahu for the second time in one week over accusations that he improperly accepted gifts from rich businessmen. Those individuals are said to include Milchan, 72, and others who gave gifts to the prime minister, according to Israeli media reports.

Milchan, through a spokeswoman, declined to comment. Netanyahu's lawyer dismissed the allegations after the three-hour questioning session, saying "any reasonable person knows that there is nothing remotely criminal involved when a close friend gives his friend a gift of CIGARS," according to Israeli news outlets.

I deleted my last comment as I went to double check something and got my wires crossed.
So basically, yes Brett Butler is bi, and his best-known relationships were with women, in particular with Justine Frischmann before she left the band to form Elastica. Some fans thought Brett and Bernard has some sort of dalliance. I always thought himself and Neil Codling had something, and it was Neil I was thinking of when I wrote my earlier comment. Bernard is alleged to be gay, but who the fuck knows.

We have to remember that in the early 90s, “barely-legal” in gay terms was a different thing to today, in 1993 in Britain, the age of consent for (male) homosexuals was 21: it wasn’t lowered to 18 until a year later, and 2000 when it was lowered to 16 to standardize with the standard age of consent. In Ireland, homosexuality had only just been decriminalised in June 1993.

@plot: Britpop 4eva 😂

Is Geeljire broken? Is there a reset button or do we have to unplug him, wait 15 seconds and then reboot?
