Blind Item #8 - Reader Blind

A lawsuit is working its way through the courts in this state known for a certain type of music.  It involves a daughter pitted against her father. Both are singer songwriters although the father is far more famous.  He is known primarily for his songs being covered by other people. One of the most famous was a version by a female singer/instrumentalist that was later a title for a movie. His most well reviewed record features an all star backing band. They later made a record together under a band name but it was not successful.

The lawsuit is on a minor financial matter but the danger is it could dredge up the sexual abuse the father committed against the daughter for many years when she was young although as an adult she has forgiven him and even performed with him . They are both recovering addicts. However, he was already sober at the time he did this. Her substance abuse problem likely came about as a result of the abuse.

This seems key to solving the blind.

John & Lilly Hiatt. He wrote "Thing Called Love" (which Bonnie Raitt covered and was a movie title)

John Hiatt / Lilly Hiatt / Bonnie Raitt

+1 Rob.. shot in Nashville. One of Rivers last films. He was so not there for that performance. Sadly withdrawn and strung out

Damn that fits, nice guess Rob,

Hiatt recorded in 1992 with Nick Lowe, Ry Cooder and Jim Keltner as a band - 'Little Village'

Hiatt was born in Los Angeles, California.[6] Her father is singer-songwriter John Hiatt and her mother was film sound editor Isabella Wood. Wood was Hiatt's second wife. Wood, who was at that time separated from John Hiatt, died from suicide when her daughter was almost one year old.[7][8][9]

Hiatt grew up in Nashville, Tennessee, on a farm with her father, his third wife Nancy Stanley Hiatt, older brother Rob, and their little sister, Georgia Rae.[7]

Anyone find anything about a lawsuit?

I remember that movie. Weird flick. River was so unlikeable with HUGE dark eye circles. Samantha picked him over Dermont and we were like why?

gauloise said...

Alternatively Detroit and Soul? And that Motown backing band that played on all the hits?

gauloise said...

or the Wrecking Crew for the backing band that didn't do well when they did their own music?

Agree with MountainMama, this was a nicely worded blind.

While I'm relieved this doesn't appear to be Steve Earle, I'm sickened to hear John Hiatt is alleged to have abused his daughter.

There really aren't any more heroes, are there? But I supposed I could ask if there ever were any to begin with?

Brayson87 said...

@Mischief, Everyone is a hero, at some point, to someone. It's one of the few good things about humans.

WOw. Big fan of Hiatt. A few months ago a magazine in Nashville did a cover story/interview of them. I guess they left that part out. I actually know people who know him, so it is particularly disturbing to me.

Wow! I have zero connections, other than loving his music and voice. This is really disturbing.

Grain of salt, like the disclaimer says, still haven't even seen verification of the lawsuit let alone the other stuff.

I dont know why but A Thing Called Love is on my short list of favorite movies, I like the quirky ones, that one and a Bed Of Rose's.
Anyway it has some awesome quotes and one of my fave quotes of all time.
- James Wright: This check seems to be made out to "selfish, arrogant dickhead".
- Miranda Presley: Yeah, they'll cash it. They know it's you.
