Worst Proposal Ever

When I first heard the story of Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Roy Williams getting his marriage proposal turned down, I was sad for him. I mean, here you are putting it all on the line and they say no. As many times as I have been married, there have been people who have also said no. They tend to be the bartenders and waitresses of the world who I met a few hours earlier sober and then decided at some point I had to be with for the rest of my life. Luckily, most of the time they turned me down. The one exception was my Vegas wedding. You know what? For not knowing the person more than a few hours, it was probably one of my more happy marriages.

Anyway, I was prepared to be all sad for Roy, especially when I read that he did not get his ring back. This is where I got confused. Down on one knee, you pop the question, she says no, but you don't get the ring back? How is that possible? How do we all know Roy did not get the ring back? Because he is suing Brooke Daniels, a former beauty queen and his ex-girlfriend who did not return the ring, claimed she lost it, and yet somehow her father had it.

So, how again did she have it after saying no? Well this is a classic. No matter how bad your marriage proposals have been, this will top it.

According to an affidavit signed by Williams, he sent $5,000 for school and dental bills, a baseball for Daniels’ brother and — as a surprise — a recorded marriage proposal with the ring through the mail just before Valentine’s Day to Daniels. However, when Daniels declined the proposal, she did not return the ring.

Through the mail? A recorded message? Could he not make the 45 minute flight to Odessa and do it in person? And what is the deal with the expenses? You are sending someone thousands of dollars every month for expenses and you are shocked she kept the ring. The ring was worth about $76,000. The national humiliation of having people know you proposed through the mail to a woman you send checks to? Priceless.

Wow, I was born in Odessa (raised in Midland) and this does NOT surprise me at all. Just because she's a "beauty queen" does not mean she has class. But then again, neither does the football player. Too bad, they could have been meant for each other :)

What a tool, he should reap what he sowed lol

I never have understood how women could take money from men just because they're rich. It just reeks of glorified prostitute, to me.

It's a little unusual, but the proposal isn't the WORST I've heard of.

What a little golddigger - besides the ring, I assume she also kept the $5,000 and the baseball for her brother? Take the man's money and jewelry but turn down his proposal? She's all class, that one.

It may be a bad proposal but he seems to be very generous. I think it is appalling that she accepted the ring but not the proposal.

enty, puhlease.

w/ the exception of the late tom landry, and mayyyyybe roger staubach as runner-up...the cowboys organization isn't exactly known for having the sharpest tools in the shed...so really, this surprises you? come on now.

Is this the same Roy Williams that was engaged to Kelly Rowland at one point? He looks a bit spesh in that picture.

Yeah, it was the the crappiest proposal probably ever. But, the ring was pretty outstanding. What a white trash whore she is for taking the ring, lying about it and accepting his money. Glad he got the ring back. Hopefully he has learned a valuable life lesson here. But, again, probably not. And yes, we all hate Jerry Jones in the DFW Area. Complete scumbag.

@jmid: Kelly Rowland was engaged to the other Roy Williams, who is a Safety.

I just can't get over that someone would send a $76k engagement ring THROUGH THE MAIL!

Ummm...she should definitely return the ring...but I would only accept a recorded marriage proposal if I was a robot.

Of course, the biggest shame in this is that the numbskull probably paid retail for the ring.

It's just nice to see that romance is not dead, at least with the Dallas Cowboys. Twenty years ago, it would have been different.

I'm with Liz.... Who sends a pricey ring through the mail??

i read this on yahoo and they said that she's claiming he told her it was ok to keep the ring and now that he's suing her for it, she's returning it. /eyeroll.

regardless of how lame the proposal was- he's lazy as hell (and a lil cocky too, to think a bribe would make the proposal acceptable), and she's a glorified prostitute as mentioned above and really? i think they're perfect for each other.

Lelaina, I'm having a bit of fun picturing you as a robot (given your avatar), actually. :)

And yes, I understand the inherent laziness/tackiness/cluelessness involved in sending an engagement ring and a recorded profile via mail, but for all we know, he thought he was being cute and original and that it would be a really sweet surprise.

("Aw, imagine my Honey when she opens up the mailbox, rips into these packages, and sees how sweet I've been with her brother and her bills! Then she'll see the gorgeous ring I picked out and she'll watch the video with tears in her eyes because of how happy she is and how much she misses me, and OF COURSE she'll call me immediately to accept because we are SO IN LOVE!")

IMHO, she's the one who comes off much worse than he. Not returning a ring symbolizing a rejected proposal just because you received it in the mail?!? If he had proposed in person, she presumably wouldn't have accepted the ring at all, right? So...perhaps she has fedexaphobia?

Well, it is pretty bad, but not as bad as my first marriage proposal. He put the ring in my hand and said, "Think about it." I was very confused.

Henriette - I hope you were too confused to think about it.

@blankprincess - Ha! I think my avatar is the blog author's self portrait, in like Microsoft Paint. It def. looks like a non-human though! hahaha ;)

@Henriette - Oh dear. That made me giggle.

Yes, I was too confused to say yes, but the ring was a cubic anyway. He told me I could "keep it."
