Mary J Blige Foundation Scholarship Drama

Back in 2010, Mary J Blige promised to pay for four years of college for 25 girls from a Bronx high school. According to The NY Post, several of those students are now being forced to either drop out or get loans because the foundation has not paid the bills. This is despite the fact that Mary said just last week that the scholarship program was doing great. The amounts are not even that high. You would think Mary would just write some checks considering that she has made about $65M in just the last five years. I bet she has spent more than $5000 shopping in the past week alone and that is about how much each semester costs for the students that did go to school. The schools have become involved and have had no luck getting their bills paid either.

Sounds like she picked the wrong person to run her foundation.

I wish celebrities would just support an existing charity instead of creating a new one with the celebrity's name on it. It creates so much extra overhead, which takes away from the cause they supposedly support.

Denzel Washington supporter Boys Cliubs USA, for example. Respected charity, good transparency, really helps disadvantaged kids.

@NuttyFlavor - I totally agree. There are some great charities out there, like the Salvation Army, which are well run, don't blow the majority of donations on salaries, etc, but make sure the people the donations are for, are helped. But that doesn't massage your ego like a foundation with your name on it does. Not to mention kicking back money in the form of "salaries" to your family members, friends, etc, as a tax dodge.

A celeb using charity to sell the public a magnanimous image of herself. Kim K would be shocked.

Agree with Nutty_Flavor!! Give your money to charities that already exist. Most stars just want to see their name publicly attached to a charity and don't really care about the people they are supposed to be helping.

Although, funding those girls' college scholarships would have been a simple matter of setting up an escrow account and funding them up front with an accountant paying the colleges each semester as needed. One or two accountants at the most could have handled it. This isn't one of those things that needed a lot of overhead.

That Office episode was on last week in repeats. So cringe-inducing.

I read somewhere, and it's probably been a year ago, that Madonna was not building the school and had reneged on the deal, saying she wanted to do something different. I'll try to find the link.

What is really sad is when they have the best intentions but their staff do not follow through. They end up spending all the money for their own personal gain. I think these people should all burn in hell. It's like a fat person taking food out of a hungry persons mouth.

I think Mary had good intentions starting the charity but somewhere its f'king up!

@Sherry, I don't know why fat people had to be denigrated in your comment, I found it really offensive.
