Your Turn

Ever have food poisoning? How did you get it? Have you eaten that kind of food again?

I get sick every time I eat Applebee's. Every. Single. Time. Doesn't matter what I eat, doesn't matter which store it is. And I'm a vegetarian, so it's not like I'm eating undercooked meat.
I don't eat there anymore, but it took 4 visits before I realized.

OMG I had the worst case of food poisoning from all things a Brownie of all places @ the Marriott Marquis in NYC, I don' t know if it was old or what but I felt that death warmed over. And yes I have had brownies since then but not from there.

Yes. Right before an interview. I turned beet red, hot, dizzy, and had serious GI issues. I've eaten tuna since but never went back to that restaurant.

And I got the job.

Enty, stop drinking.

yes. thought (& wished i would die). chicken was what done me in, but i still eat it. don't do potlucks anymore though, and its because of this.

Last time I had it it was the worst.

My mom brought back some cheese crackers she purchased from a street vendor in brazil.
I guess my stomach has been americanized because I was sick for a week and ended up in the ER because I continued to barf everything I tried to eat.

I don't think I'll be eating any brazilian cheese crackers in america anytime soon.

Kraft Mac and Cheese did it to me. The milk that I used was within the "safe" date, but I thought that it smelled a little off. Even though I ate mac and cheese at least a couple times a week up to that point, I think that I've eaten the Kraft version less than 10 times in the past 5 1/2 years.

From a salsa bar at a taco salad restaurant once. And from tuna - I haven't had tuna in 10 yrs because of it

Thai Express. Chicken Pad Thai. Lasted five days, I love a few pounds! And yes, I've eaten it many times since. From the same location.

I'm one of those people that overcooks chicken because I'm certain I'm going to die if I don't.

Yes from an Arbys market fresh sandwich. I can not even bring myself to eat any of their food again. What I wouldn't give for a beef n cheddar tho.

Can't even blame my phone for that one.

Mexican restaurant in North Hollywood and a Mexican Taco Cart in Rancho Palos Verdes. Sicker than a dog. horrible. Never again will I eat a taco off a truck, never!

I was 22 years old and my friend talked me into driving up north with her to Hayward, Ca to stay with these guys in a band and had a huge party house. We had a great time the first night, then the next morning before driving into SF, we stopped at Denny's for breakfast. As we approached the car to leave, I felt something strange within. 10 minutes later vom all over my favorite old Thrasher t-shirt. Of course two of the cute band dudes were with us and there I am with barf all over me. We went back so I could change and carried on to SF. I was dying by the time we got to the Haight, so we found a friend who let me lay in her bed all day while everyone hung out in the city. I have not been to a Denny's since then!

When I was a kid, I switched meals with my mom in a restaurant and threw up for about 12 hours. About ten years ago I ate a burger at a Wendy's and also threw up for about 12 hours. The incidents were roughly 20 years apart. So I'm due for another round in the next few years.

Burger King tenderloin. Never eaten at one again. Good diet though :)

@Bima herself -- Mexican restaurant in North Hollywood -- which one?????

Hotel bar in Rochester Minnesota. I had quesadillas...yes, I know, who orders quesadilla's in MN? Anyway, my colleague ordered the SAME THING and did not get sick. I spent the night and next day on the bathroom floor.

El Roy 13 said...

No, oddly enough. But I did get heat stroke once out running. That was horrible.

And I did over do it with a cleansing detox tea once.

StanleyRoper said...

Twice. The first time was from Pick Up Stix when a co-worker ordered California rolls. They were room temperature, but we ate them anyway. At the end of the day I had to clinch my teeth to get to the bathroom before throwing up. My co-worker had a stomachache, but nothing else.
The second, and most serious, was from Chipotle. A bad burrito put me in the hospital overnight and led to a visit from the Health Dept. after I made a complaint. They eventually shut the place down for a while until it came "up to code". I literally still have a hard time looking at a Chipotle restaurant, the memories are that bad.

@beguessin-I've heard of three separate people getting sick from salsa bars that are left unattended all day. Those things scare me now.

The BEST Thai place in West Seattle. Chicken. So sick for two days. Worst. Thing. Ever.

This restaurant is unbelievably good, great reviews, the whole nine yards. I've actually made it to the door but I can't go back inside! Not one of my friends has ever gotten sick, but my ex and I felt like we were dying. Definitely the food. *shudders*

shag said...

Taco Bell Value Menu. I felt like I was dying, and passed out on the floor on my way from the bathroom only to be awakened by my mom's dog licking my face. Have not been brave enough to try their food again.

.robert said...

Got it from the dining hall in Cheyenne Mountain, that place was notorious for food poisoning.

EmEyeKay said...

@anita_mark: my chicken is ALWAYS overcooked, for the same reason. I can't stop doing it!

Anotheramy said...

Yes from old bologna. It didn't taste right but I was hungry and at work so I ate it anyway. 9 days and two antibiotics later I finally recovered.
Never that brand again and I am terrified of things out of date.

I got food poisoning in college from an undercooked egg sandwich in the dining commons at UMass. Egg sandwiches are basically my favorite, but when I spat out CLEAR egg whites I knew I shouldn't finish. Spend the whole night (maybe 8 hours later) puking my face off. But I still love egg sandwiches.

Barbecued chicken from a restaurant in Stone Mountain Ga (it's no longer in business). Prayed for death. Never ate there again. That was 25 years ago and I still hesitate when I have barbecued chicken (although it doesn't stop me).

MommaBear said...

The very first and consequently, the only time I ate at Burger King. I still shutter when I think about it. It was the kind of poisoning where you just don't know whether to kneel and pray to the toilet or sit on it. I opted to sit and hug the garbage can while crying. Nothing like a good colon cleanse.

Mama June said...

No, and I consider myself very lucky!

Stanley, that sucks about Chipotle! I love that place!

shakey said...

2x. I never eat chicken from a food court restaurant during hot weather anymore.

Pizza Hut meat lover's pizza. Many many years ago. I couldn't figure out which was worse, the sickness or the mondo headache I had. This was back when Dune was in movie theaters, because that's where we were when I wanted to lay down on the floor and die. The only redeeming thing about that night was Sting in his winged underwear. I've had Pizza Hut once since then - a couple of years ago. Never again.

When I was 15 I got food poisoning from something @ McDonald's. I never ate that item again. Last December I got salmonella from a Mexican restaurant & I almost died. I haven't eaten there since & have become a vegetarian. I would never eat there again, but I still eat veggie Mexican dishes.

mikey said...

My daughter and I both got food poisoning from eating at the in-laws last Christmas Eve. We were horribly sick Christmas Day and the next 6 day. We ate the deviled eggs and no one else in our family ate them, so we decided it was that.

Left the hubby and will never eat the in-laws deviled eggs again. Daughter won't either.

Momster said...

^^Actually, salsa can be your worst enemy, because it's not cooked.

I've had food poisoning several times, but the worst was more than 15 years ago, when I was about 4 months pregnant. From crab salad. Horrible.

Frufra said...

Not food poisoning, and not me, but a friend got Hep A (I think, hep A,B, and C are confusing to me) from a food handler at a very popular BBQ restaurant. Confirmed by the CDC and everything. I have never seen an otherwise healthy, grown man so very sick. Took him months to get back to work, and will have to monitor his liver forever.

He did get an almost immediate cash settlement, and put in a lovely pool and outdoor kitchen with the money!

Frufra said...

@seaward - for me, it's IHOP. Think it's whatever they use to coat the grill. No bueno.

From tuna few weeks ago. Horrible. I will never eat tuna again.
Almost 3 years ago I was 9 weeks pregnant and I ate unpasteurized cheese from Mexico like a dummy. Talk about projectile vomiting.
Miscarried the next day. ER doc didn't think it was connected, but I did. I still eat Mexican cheese but i make sure it is pasteurized.

The Manor in Wayne, NJ used to have an all-you-can-eat tepid lobster buffet. Washed it down with massive amounts of Sambuca. Next day was Sunday. I prayed to St. Theresa to put me out of my misery, since I knew God was busy that day.

At my new job, boss told me never to call in and say I had food poisoning because apparently too many people use that as an excuse when they're hungover!!! (Here, they just say to call in sick, don't say why.)

Never had food poisoning that I know of. Question people who claim to get it all the time.

Moonmaid said...

Once from Taco Bell. Me and my son both. Don't eat that crap now. I swore I got food poisoning twice from scallops until I realized I was deathly allergic to them! Now even the smell of them makes me ill. :P

mikey said...

@Turkish Taffy - Ha, I knew there was a reason I don't like The Manor! I've been to many a wedding reception there - I do like their cocktail hour food.

Maja With a J said...

I don't think so. I've had a few instances where I've been travelling and my stomach didn't quite agree with the new bacteria it was introduced to, but I don't think that counts as food poisoning. I don't eat meat that foten anymore, but when I do, it is usually not cooked all the way through, because that would ruin it *L*.

A little mexican shack in Anaheim, we were starving after a day of indoor painting. Unfortunately what I threw up was the Mango margarita from the night before at El Chollo's in LA. Its been 3 years and I still have not had a mango margarita or ever eaten at El Chollo's again. Unfortunately I connect the food poisoning with the restaurant - even though it was probalby from the shack I ate at the following day. I do miss mango margarita's

Maja With a J said...

Moonmaid - I am allergic to scallops too, thought I had eaten a bad one at first but realized after a few times that it's the scallops themselves that I can't have.

I can eat and drink expired stuff, even milk, and be okay. Not that I do it all the time.

How do we know for sure it's food posioning as opposed to just the last thing we've eaten before we get a stomach virus? If it's more then one person at the same time like some of y'all I guess is one way.
I've always wondered about that. My family just had a stomach virus last month, so it made me wonder.

Janet296 said...

OMG yes! I was seventeen years old. At that time I use to love to go skating. So afterwards, I was hungry. There was this gas station/ deli. I stopped in and got a bbq sandwich. It wasn't an hour later that I felt worse than I had ever felt before. When I finally vomit, it was projectile and 15 in a row. I could have hit the wall across the room. My mother was there with me. I started drinking some water when my mother said don't drink anything. Too late....Vomited 15 more times. Toward the end, I had nothing left and it was painful. It has been 25 years and I still won't eat bbq sandwiches.

YES! I had campylobacter intestinal food poisoning - by the time I got to the docs I was so dehydrated they had to send me to the er cause they couldn't get a vein open for an IV Horrible... look it up - i will spare you the details LOL From a chinese rest. in West Chester, PA. Chicken & broccoli or garlic chicken - we had both.Didn't eat chinese for almost 2 years. If i even smelled it, I honestly got stomach cramps... oh the mind can F you up that way

Deep fried chicken..I was in a hurry so I picked up a three piece dinner from a take-out hole in the wall. I was in the bathroom on the floor, and my family was at the beach - so I battled it on my own. I showed up for work two days later and my boss told me the hole in the wall was a gambling front and the chicken must have been sitting there for a few days. I turn green every time I drive by..I still love chicken.

I've had viruses and food poisoning. Food poisoning: uncontrolled diarrhea, projectile vomiting, fever, horrible headache. Think the worst you've ever felt and x 100 and wish for death. I had the swine flu which was close to feeling that bad without the intestional issues. Thankfully I was only 18 when I had food poisoning so I recovered fairly quickly. I ended up at the doctor. Have no idea what I ate to this day.

Shrimp. Went out to dinner with some friends, and we all had various seafood combos, but mine was the only one that included shrimp. It took about two hours to hit, and I was all alone and ever so grateful that the sink was directly in front of the toilet because I could sit on one and puke in the other. I thought I was dying.

Yes, I have eaten shrimp since, it's still what I usually order when I go out to eat. Love it, and we have some really good shrimp here in Florida.

Stacey Charter said...

@RENOBLONDEE - If you go to the doctors or ER they test you and report the food poisoning type to you and The CDC. That's how I knew what I had- i thought it was the flu which is why i waited to go to the doctors. THEN Oh Joy - 3 months later I got a call at work from the CDC.. Nothing like hearing Center for disease control needs to talk to you. Christ- talk about a heart attack LOL. Once i realized It was about the food poisoning tho - i had to answer a buttload of questions about what I ate, where it was from etc.

First 24 years of my life - nothing. Then I got food poisoning 3 times in 4 years.
1st - Hero Burger - not awful, but bad enough. I still don't like big restaurant burgers, but the thin fast food ones are ok :)
2nd- Swiss Chalet - horrible, horrible feeling. Took 2 years for me to eat there again, and still don't eat much chicken
3rd - recently at the Keg, I think. very mild, could've been a 24 hour thing but I threw up all night and felt off for a couple of days. I would eat Steak again today though :)

Good times!

@t-taffy and mikey: ha the manor! IIRC they were shut down b/c of asbestos! think i was there once or twice for a wedding but i was pretty young.

i got food poisoning from Burger King several years ago. Have not been back.

When I was 2 I literally almost died after getting e. coli from apple cider. Rather than picking the apples from the trees, they apparently picked up the apples that had fallen to the ground and were laying in contaminated poo. I was in the hospital for almost a month and my kidneys are all screwed up. may very well need a transplant some day :(

I got food poisoning all the time when I lived in Peru. I was careful about where & what I ate with one big exception. I had (and still have) a huge weakness for anticuchos (grilled beef hearts). Anticuchos from a proper restaurant never gave me trouble. Unfortunately, I was addicted to ones that were sold on the street outside the cock fighting arena in the little town where I lived. I knew I was rolling the dice by eating them but they were so delicious I couldn’t help myself. Off the top of my head I think I remember there being about a 50/50 chance of bad news for my stomach the next day.

__-__=__ said...

Yes. It's bacteria! A shot of vodka will cure it - although this is the one time you will NOT want to drink it.

Once when I was a teenager I got badly drunk, and then tried to chug like half a bottle of rum. I was violently ill for two or three days. After that it was about thirty years before I could even stand the smell of rum.

Frufra said...

Ooh, that reminds me of a study I read that researched rampant stomach distress on cruise ships. Those who drank alcohol with their meals were significantly less likely to catch whatever crud was going around on board the boat. So there you go, more scientific proof that alcohol (in moderation, naturally) Is good for, and possibly required for, healthy living!

car54 said...

I have pretty major food allergies so many foods make me sick so it's hard to classify that as food poisoning, lol.

I try to figure out what is making me sick or giving me trouble and avoid it--but sometimes it is how something is prepared or ingredients with the meal that I don't know are there til after...so yes I have eaten the food again if I feel the problem was circumstantial not a reaction to the food itself.

SusanB said...

@Frufra - I got the norowood virus once on a cruise - it was going around and although I did my best to keep my hands clean, I caught it. And I was drinking my share of alcohol too.

It hit me about 9 in the evening in my cabin - I remember the next morning calling for the cabin cleaner and giving him an extra $20.00 as an apology for the mess in the bathroom, even though I tried to clean it up. The CDC was at the pier when the ship docked and we all had tons of paperwork to fill out.

Three times.

First time was from peanut butter. I opened a brand new jar [though truthfully, it had been sitting in my cupboard for at least a year, and did smell a little funky when I opened it, but thought, what the hell...] and made 2 PB&J sandwiches to bring to work. Within an hour of eating them, I felt sick, but can't go to the bathroom in public, so held it in till I got home. Almost lost my insides on the street, while making my way home.

Second time - opening of a Rain Forest Cafe - media night. Told us we could order whatever we wanted, so of course we did. I noticed my friend kept going off to the bathroom. I was sick when I got home. The next day we discussed it and realized the culprit had to be the chicken fingers.

Third time - pasta (from a buffet) that was left in the hot sun (a friend had a pool party/BBQ).

Frufra said...

SusanB, that's horrible! I always cringe when I hear about a whole cruise ship of sick people on the news. I'm sure the plumbing on the boat isn't up to that kind of a workout - gross, but that's what that news always makes me think.

Truthfully, the whole rampant virus on board thing is one of the reasons I've never been on a cruise. The thought of being sick and stuck on that boat really gets to me.

My very first case of food poisoning was the night before I was flying from London to Sydney - having never had it (I have a bit of a cast-iron stomach), I had NO IDEA what was wrong with me and I thought I was going to have to be hospitalised. My house-mate calmed me down - after she found me lying in front of the Aga trying to warm up and I got on the plane and ate plain bread rolls and drank water for the whole 25 hours. A.W.F.U.L.

It was probably the rice on the all-you-can-eat Chinese food buffet - I know, asking for it - but I had always been fairly impervious to stomach upsets before that! Never again will I eat rice at an all-you-can-eat buffet!

Ew -the memories! Grrr. Argh!

I had food poisoning when I was 18 and studying in South America. It was bad. It was beyond bad. I felt like someone had lit my entire body on fire from my neck to my thighs. It was messy, as I was erupting from both ends. I actually was lying there in bed praying to god to either let me die or to render me unconscious because I couldn't take it. The food that made me sick was poorly preserved fruit spread.

One other time, about 1992, I ate the fish sandwich at Burger King. I knew within an hour of eating it that I was going to suffer, and suffer I did. Unfortunately, I had to go on a business trip with my boss in the morning, driving from NYC to the opposite, diagonal corner of NY state. I think I had to stop to throw up about eight times. I tried to eat simple things like plain white rice and ginger ale, but nothing would stay down. Apparently, I looked really, really scary, too. Trip from hell.

It wasn't exactly food poisoning per se, but about 5 years ago I had some kind of weird stomach ick that lingered for nearly a month--I could eat, but only certain very mild items. I was going out to a club to see a band I liked a lot at the time, so beforehand I had a PB & blackberry jam sandwich, and some of those Kashi Cheerios-ripoff w/the hearts with milk. About 1/2 an hour after I got to the club I was SO sick--it's the first and only time I've ever thrown up at a rock club in 25 years of seeing bands play out! (In the insult-to-injury category, the puking was so violent that I managed to wet myself as well...cleaned up as best I could, but I spent the rest of the evening w/a sweater around my waist covering my ass.) Of course, someone took a picture of the audience at the show & put it up on the band's website, and there I am, hanging onto one of the stage monitors, totally green around the gills and looking like death well-chilled...oy. *shudder* I've never had that PBJ combo or that cereal ever again, believe me!

Burger King. Kids had chicken meals, hubby and I had burgers. He escaped with just a stomach ache, I was sicker than a dog from both ends, so much so I contacted the Health Dept and made a complaint. I had Salmonella when I was 12 years old, had to be hospitalized and was so dehydrated I actually had hallucinations and seizures. Not nice.
Then after 2 times getting food poisoning after eating oysters I came to the conclusion that I just can't eat them and think I am allergic.
And, a week ago, I got food posioning at a peruvian restaurant after eating octopuss and ceviche, but I was the only one who got sick so I guess I ate the only piece that was contaminated. Lucky me!

When I was a teenager, my family relocated from Vermont to Arizona. My friends threw me a surprise going-away party. Biggest surprise? The cake had real whipped cream frosting, which apparently had been sitting out too long. I got horrendous food poisoning.... as in, dry-heaving for 14 straight hours. It wasn't enough to make me give up cake (I mean, come ON!), but I am very careful about any cream-based frostings. Also, over 30 years later, I have not forgotten that party. :)

I've had it twice in the past decade.
The first time was from a cantaloupe I bought at the grocery store. I washed it prior to cutting it, but was still sicker than a dog.
Last year I ate at Sam's Chowder House in Half Moon Bay, Ca and had their famous Lobster roll. Boy was that a mistake. I was staying in a gorgeous B&B and I was in bed shivering and sweating. Puked my guts out for hours. I'm not a big lobster eater and I thought I'd try it. Can't stand the thought of lobster now.

I get a little ill from chicken most of the time, but I got REALLY sick from a salad bar at Whole Foods and wound up in the hospital. I wanted to put an ad on Craigslist for someone to come over and bash my head in with a brick (no, really - it's what I wanted, and not even in some kind of weirdo snuff film kind of way) because I was so sick, all I could do was puke and cry. and then, two months later, I got it from smoked trout in a can from Trader Joes. My mom got VERY ill from peanut butter a few years back.
