If you thought being married to Tom Cruise was bad, there is someone who has survived a marriage that was even more controlling. Hard to believe. Well, this A lister in the world and in her mind suffered through having someone follow her 24 hours a day. Someone seated in front of her bedroom door when she was inside. The only time she was allowed to wear even the slightest bit of revealing clothes was during a performance. Otherwise if she was not with her husband it was chastity and innocence all the way. There was the tracking device in her phone so in case she got separated from her minders that she could be found quickly. If she went out at night she had to call in and check in every two hours. This was even if she was at the movies and it lasted longer than two hours. This was also despite the fact she had someone with her in his employ. He was always worried she would fall for the guy so he rotated them every few weeks. Guy friends? Not a chance. She was only allowed to go out once or twice a month. She could have friends come over, but only one glass of wine per hour and they had to leave by midnight. All purchases had to be approved in advance. All clothing choices had to be approved in advance. Despite all of this she managed to last way longer in the marriage than anyone thought she would.

I guess this is the reason she dresses in such a revealing way now, and would also explain why she still dresses like it's the 1990s (belly shirts, pastel denim skirts, etc). Guess she never got it out of her system back then.
Tommy is a jerk but I agree that he made Mariah's career and she would probably be nowhere if she hadn't met him and married him.

I knew this was Mariah the second sentence in...that controlling marriage is legendary...and wouldn't you be crazy too if that happened to you? I just wonder if he does the same thing to Thalia?
Someone of Mariah's talent would have been discovered sooner or later. Did Mottola put her on the fast track of superstardom? Yes, without question. But don't let the princess diva persona blind you that Mariah was very talented and any music executive would have given their right hand to have her on their label.

She was a star before they were married! And her compound was near where I grew up. Always heard from friends that she was nice to everyone there, so I can't really trash her.
Tommy Mottola's also the guy that Michael Jackson went to beg money from after he had to pay his multi-million dollar settlement to Jordy Chandler. He didn't want to pay all that cash himself, so he went to Mottola, saying it was in the label's own interest to cough up some of the cash. Reportedly, Mottola gave Michael the money, along with the advice: Stop messing with little boys.

She was Mattola's golden goose. They met when he was married with kids and left them for her. Sure she was young, but I guess she figured it was a fair trade off for a top of the charts career at that time in her life. But also want to add that I think it's interesting that both Tom Cruise & Tommy Mattola are both short Cancerians males.

I remember when she decided to really let loose after the divorce. You could tell she was trying to do anything and everything that she wasn't able to do before.

So listen: Mariah Carey grew up relatively poor. You and I both would've rode that c*ck all the way to the bank and top of the charts. If she's crazy, he made her that way. I've read blinds that implied that she was a prostitute (along with her HIV+ sister) and that's how she met Tommy. Either way...I feel sorry for her as I don't think she ever recovered from his mental abuse. And who KNOWS what she went through trying to maintain her career after she actually left him.

People need to get their facts straight before they make comments. You don't have to like her or be a fan, but at least know the history. What does not get reported a lot is that when Tommy signed her, she also was on the verge of being signed by another label. I believe it was Warner. She was also already a successful recording artist when she married him, so she didn't really need to marry him at that point. And stayed married to him because if she left he threatened to destroy her career. When she finally did leave he attempted to do just that.He planted stories about her in the media, played radio DJ's $ to report false stories he would plant, all in his attempt to destroy her. The last straw was actually the Glitter album. Mariah was still under contract with Sony while recording it. Tommy heard some of the songs and basically gave the ideas to Jennifer Lopez, then rushed out her material first. This was enough evidence for Mariah to get out of her contract with Sony early. Tommy was fired for causing them to lose their biggest artist (publicly that was not the reason given). And I know this not because I'm a big Mariah fan as many will try and say. I know this because my aunt worked at Sony music, and one of my best friends also worked on their legal team.

As I heard things, the other company interested in POSSIBLY signing her was Brenda K Starr's label. Don't remember if that label was Warner or not. The deal was not specifically to be signed as a "priority" artist. Which it was Warner they sign plenty artist as all large record companies do just to keep their system moving along - their art work, printing, pressing, distribution for the records, worldwide distribution. To "make" an artist a name brand takes millions for promotion & commitment. Just being signed doesn't mean much for the artist. Tommy promised to make Mariah a star & he married her to get a cut from the wealth. Jennifer Lopez did get a priority artist contract from Mattola because she was fucking Mattola too and had manager Benny Medina to continue pushing her. I know this from working in the business and knowing the players too. In my opinion, Mariah is definitely very talented tho.
Tommy and Mariah used to own a country house in Hillsdale, NY near some relatives of mine. She used to drive around in her convertible wearing barely anything. She would also frequent the local liquour store ... the owner of the store had to tell her that she didn't have to get out of her car and he would bring her purchases out to her becasue of the attention she would draw to herself by the way she was dressed. I guess Tommy's tracking device didn't work in the Berkshires.
This is real old news. Mariah herself told everything in a magazine article about how controlling her husband was and why she started dressing the way she dresses and going out with the people she was seen with. This should not even be a blind because I cannot imagine there is anybody on earth who doesn't know this already.

I remember that thing happening with Jennifer Lopez. Mariah was all set to use a particular sample on one of her songs and then out of nowhere, suddenly JLo has the exact same sample on her song "I'm Real" which became a big hit and left Mariah scrambling to find a new sample for her song. I forgot the outcome of Mariah's song, though.
I don't know if it was the same sample, but Mariah did a song with Ja Rule and "I'm Real" was done after and then released first. The song still ended up on the Glitter album, you can definitely her the similarities, except the Mariah Ja Rule song was better, but there was no chance it was going to be released as a single after "I'm Real" became a hit.

Years ago, I watched an interview with a couple of LA based radio DJs. They all said that they'd been visited by someone (with a bag of cash) who wanted to pay them not to play Mariah's records. They refused and then the threats started. Tommy Mattola was a mental case!!
