Great New York Law - First Arrest

A few months ago an 11 year old girl named Leandra was killed when the driver of the car in which she was a passenger decided to drink and drive. The driver crashed into another car which killed Leandra. As a result a new law was passed in New York which makes an arrest for DWI with a child in the car an aggravated DWI and a felony. The person also is charged with endangering the welfare of a child. Well, yesterday afternoon the smiling woman above was the first person arrested under the new law. Reanna Reidpath was arrested after police spotted her swerving on a highway and pulled her over and she blew a .204. The legal limit is .08. In Reanna's car was her 9 year old daughter.

What makes people do this? To not only put your life in danger and others but your child? Seriously? And in the middle of the afternoon? I can't believe she is actually f**king smiling in her mug shot.

Could it be that she was so hammered she forgot she had her child in the car?

Either way she's a fvcken idiot. These morons need not be procreating.

THANK GOD for the new law. As a NYS resident, it is one of the few thins this state does that I agree with.

What an asshole. So glad her kid is safe.....

i hope other states take note REAL quick.

She was DRUNK when this photo was taken. Bet she's not smiling now. (Which is how it should be---there is nothing remotely funny about drunk driving, let alone drunk driving with your kid in the car).

This is a terrific law and should be adopted by every state. Hope this f*cking idiot gets to spend a lot of time in jail thinking about how stupid she was and thanking her lucky stars that she didn't injure or kill her daughter.

Poor Leandra, may she be at peace. As for this piece of sh*t photographed above, i hope the hard time wipes that smile right off your damn face.

Wish all the states would do this too.

I don't understand why child endangerment and/or endangerment of others isn't automatic with a DUI anyway. It's common sense, isn't it?

This woman is supposed to be 33. She looks older. I bet she has drug issues, too.

There is no excuse for this shit. Why do people still do it?!

Eve said...

Because we live in a country with the greatest income inequality in the world, one of the highest drug and alcohol rates in the industrialized world and one of the worst (and ever-worsening) education system in the world, which is all correlative. When we as a society allow the upper 1% to basically steal the rug out from the other 99%, we end up with criminality, ignorance and hopelessness. This woman is a symptom, not the disease.

Hope all states adopt the law.

Wow, Eve, tell us what you REALLY think.

This woman had a CHOICE, just like any other person who drives under the influence of alcohol, drugs, sleep deprivation, etc. To blatantly put a child at risk while driving with a blood alcohol level of .204 was her CHOICE. Nobody forced her - not the 1% of the economy who you believe are the cause of all of our ills.

This is not a perfect world, but we must place the blame where it is due. This woman needs to be held responsible for her actions. Way to go, New York.

Lousy mother that she is, she's probably smiling because she's thinking, "Ah, now the kid is CPS's problem for at least the next couple of weeks and I won't have to spend any of my drinking/doping money on presents and I can make all those New Year's Eve parties." She should hook up with ballon boy's dad. Parents of the year, all the way.

Eve, I think you may be my soul mate. :)

I bet the daughter was relieved when the car was stopped. Had a scary ride like that when I was a teenager, can't imagine what it would be like for a 9 year old.

I wonder if there is a state of drunkenness where you just don't realize you're drunk? I mean, why else would you get in the car with your kid when you're blitzed?

I'm giving her the benefit of the doubt here and praying that she has a *grimace* on her face instead of a smile. Stupid cow.

How eerie that Leandra & this woman's name reanna are similar.Gr8 law that needs to be enacted in every state. Report someone if you suspect someone of drinking & driving!

nancer said...

wow, eve, you go, girl! i like the way you think.

i got so excited about eve, i forgot to post my thoughts.

people like this need to get arrested so they get clued in to the fact that they're ALCOHOLICS and get treatment.

all this hoo ha about 'choice?' yes, she made a 'choice'---while she was 3 times drunk. that's not really a choice anymore.
it's too bad more people don't understand alcoholism. this woman will hopefully hear this wake up call and get help so she can be a good mother and not a dangerous one. people can and do change, ya know.

I want to kiss you, Eve.

But rich or poor, educated or not, everyone knows drinking and driving is wrong and dangerous. Yet too many people still do it. I applaud New York state for enforcing this law and wish it had been in place 15 years ago when I was living there and saw teen friends killed and the drivers get off with slaps on the wrist.

My mother did it all the time and because she was known to them, the cops always made her go home and looked the other way. She was so blitzed she had no clue what she was doing but my 13 year old self and my 8 year old sister were dragged along for the ride. This woman probably was so drunk, she didn't know which end was up.

Glad I have some soul mates in here. :)

And Babs, I'm not saying this woman didn't do something horrible (which unfortunately I've seen a lot of parents do and which never stops being horrible, scary and sad). What I am saying is that if you look out there at what this country has become you will find a million Reannas and one of the main reasons that there are a million Reannas (and worse) is because of the way the 1% have engineered it so that the other 99% get tossed down the drain, with no education, no prospects, no idea how far from healthy they are and little hope. No one is looking out for the Reannas of the world, which is why they grow up ignorant and without a moral compass. I don't know this lady personally; I'm speaking in general terms. You don't see the sheer volume of these kinds of horror stories (that we all like to cluck our tongues at when they're held up in a solitary glare) in countries where income inequality isn't as steep and outrageous as it is here. You also don't see as many prisons. That said, I think the law is a good thing, but I wish intervention and support--both in terms of alcohol abuse and parenting--were done a lot quicker.

@Eve, I agree. It's a major problem that gets ignored when the media only focuses on the individual cases, and we all tut, roll our eyes and feel superior.

It's not a US-specific problem though. Here in the UK we have kids with no guidance and self-respect having kids to which they themselves offer no guidance and self respect, having kids to which they... you see my point.

That said, there comes a point where common sense must come into it. You can blame a bad background, lack of education etc, but when you're endangering your child or the children of others I think you need a mixture of help AND proper punishment.

Right now in the UK it seems that the laws are firmly on the side of the accused everytime. The result is a nanny state that makes the kind of people I mention above feel infallible. Self respect is one thing but respecting others is just as impportant. It seems empathy is a dying trait over here.

Sorry, I don't know where that came from. I tend to waffle when I feel self-righteous! haha.

In keeping with the spirit of Christmas, I'll keep the majority of the reply I'd like to make to Eve and her soulmates to myself. I'll just say that I apparently have a VERY different view of our social & economic system than you all appear to have. (And no, I'm not one of the hated 1% you refer to, but I did grow up dirt poor and managed to reach adulthood without feeling beat down by 'the man.')

And Nancer - yes, she had a choice not to drink. I DO understand alcoholism, only too well. I had someone close die of ruptured esophogeal varices, and it was an ugly, bloody death. Please don't tell me I don't understand. But even alcoholics have a choice. It's a hard road, but they can choose to get help for their addiction.

Way late here, but I agree 100% with Eve's comments above.

Idocracy--it's happening! It's like the new rapture or something for me (however I don't believe one speck of the rapture stuff...).

But I seriously worry about the current and future state of our Union!

The frontal lobe is so damaged in so many people it's as if we have a bunch of total moronic, lobotomized heathens in our country with no sense of right or wrong.

selenakyle said...

Yes, I also agree with Babs--people do have choices, but they tend to err on the side of the absolute WRONG choice quite often when they are down trodden, addicted, EFFING STUPID, pick a reason...
