Blind Items Revealed #4

July 30, 2019

This long-delayed film directed by an aging permanent A list director will finally premiere in about two months.  Three aging A-list actors are featured in starring roles.  This group is so far past their prime, that even the concept of a big-budget film in this genre today would be laughable.  That is, to everyone except the streaming giant.  Yet another colossal waste of money, but the streaming service has already sent signals out that they will spare no expense, legal or not, to try and buy as many awards as possible, for this white elephant of a film.

Netflix/Martin Scorsese/Robert De Niro/Al Pacino/Joe Pesci ("The Irishman")

I am certainly looking forward to 4 Italians depicting a story about the Irish. 😉

Martin Scorsese is old,not aging. Give it a rest, lots to complain about Netflix, this isn't really one of them.

Apparently, De Niro's ancestors are more Irish than Italian. His father was half-Italian, half-Irish, while his mother was born in an English-German family, with a few Irish roots.

I actually think this looks good, tbh. The fact they're older doesn't particularly put me off. You should look at how old some of those in the higher echelons of the MAFIA are.

But it’s a Martin Scorsese directed film, starring DeNiro, Pacino, and Joe Pesci, ffs! How could anyone describe that as a laughable, colossal waste of money?!

Netflix rewarding them for their TDS.

The movie is based on the excellent book, I Hear You Paint Houses, which was the deathbed confession of Irish/Swedish Philly mobster Frank O'Shea, called the Irishman by his mostly Italian mobster colleagues.

He was the driver and liason between Jimmy Hoffa and the NE Pennsylvania Bufalino crime family. O'Shea was the protogee and close friend of Russell Bufalino, the head of the family and the mobster who acted on behalf of Hoffa with the other mob families.

He claims to have picked up Hoffa from his last known sighting at the Red Fox diner outside Detroit and driven him to his final meeting in a surbabab house owned by a crematorium owner from where he never returned.

O'Shea also carried out killings for other mob families and claimed to have been the killer of Crazy Joe Gallo in the infamous hit at Umberto's Clam House in Manhattan's Little Italy.

I can really recommend this book if you're into true crime or mob stuff. As for it's verify? I really don't know, but a lot of it seems to ring true.

So it's not about Irish gangsters as such, but a specific one who worked with Italians. Though DeNiro didn't do so bad as another mobster nicknamed The Irishman, Jimmy Burke (Conway in the movie) in Goodfellas.

I'll watch the movie before deciding if it shite or not, Enty. With the names involved, despite the off screen reputations of some of them, it seems pretty damn promising.

By the way Hoffa was of German/Ulster Scots (Yayyy!😎) descent, not ethnicities normally associated with organised crime. At least in the States. Plenty of the latter involved round here though. I could throw a stick out my back door and hit five or six.

Sandybrook-- I haven't seen the ads, so Ive had the same thought...is it meant sarcastically/in a smart ass kind of way? Just acting, I guess!

I dont want to believe this will be bad. There was a time I would have happily waited in line at the theatre for a movie with this same pedigree. Please share spoiler-free, see it/skip it reviews, people who catch it early.

DeNiro's a washed-up, toxic clown, but the rest could be very good. Ageism is a sad thing.

Not being sarcastic Vita. They could have at least tried to get Irish stars, maybe not as big as Deniro and Pacino, but since they are portraying mob, I guess they are fine. Don't know what Pacino has left in the tank though.

I've never seen a Scorsese movie that is a collassal waste of time.

Please, so fake. Why do the Russian trolls who bought this site when the original Enty sold it have a grudge against Netflix?

Joicoh said...

I can’t take these actors seriously anymore after their rabid mouth foaming over Trump. They’ve killed their own craft. De Niro is creepier than anyone.

Maybe this crew could do a Hatton Garden robbery film.

Yes, super excited for this as well. Loved the book, did you catch the Himmmm story about the Teflon Don?

When was that filmed?

Sandybrook - only De Niro is playing an Irish character. Frank Sheeran was an Irishman that worked for the Italian mafia (Pesci). De Niro is part Irish and only a quarter Italian. Pacino plays Jimmy Hoffa.
