Funniest Emmy Awards?

I actually watched the awards twice last night. For some reason, FOX decided that the 5-8 live showing was not enough and went ahead and gave it to the west coast back to back and because I enjoyed it so much the first time through I went ahead and watched it again. Jane Lynch was great, I still have no idea what Lonely Island was about, why Wilmer Valderrama was invited to be an Emmytone. Oh, I don't know how Julie Bowen managed to even lift her Emmy Award since it weighs more than her. Katie Holmes talks out the side of her mouth and it was kind of annoying. Amy Poehler has a lot of guts. Not just getting up on stage first in the stunt but also to wear that dress. Did not like the Goopster's dress. Melissa McCarthy was the most genuine and Modern Family must have practiced for each one of their wins because they were all great. Yay to Peter Dinklage. How can you not love a guy who thanks his pet sitter. Kyle Chandler forgot his wife. Steven Levitan's wife has really good comic timing and knows where the cameras are. Jane Lynch really did seem ticked off at actors like Kate Winslet coming down from the movies and getting all the awards. I am amazed at the number of no shows who were nominated. Rob Lowe called all the women girls. Jimmy and Jimmy were the best presenters. I could have lived without Charlie or Ashton, even in the funny Office skit. And Jon Cryer will always be the guy from Pretty In Pink. The highlights beneath, and the winners below that.

The bit with Amy Poehler & the other nominees was planned ahead of time.

If Jon Cryer would just fully commit to always being the Duckman and wear the shoes, I would love him forever!

Only laughed out loud a couple of times - mostly kept looking at the clock to see how much longer the show would be going on for. The comedy ladies (and Modern Family folks) know how to "bring it" - if more presenters/winners were like that, I think the folks at home would enjoy the show more.

Confession time: I LOL'ed during the Office sketch with KK wondering if she was pronouncing "work" correctly.

Final note - does anyone know what the deal was the Rob Lowe clearly made with the devil? He has not aged a bit!!!

It's not that I am a Charlie Sheen fan, I just can't like Ashton, he looks greasy and dirty to me and he tries too hard.

I thought the funniest part was when Jane Lynch attributed her being a lesbian to the cast of Entourage. Hilarious.

I totally missed the Emmys last night, but two points:
Why is no one mentioning Juliana Margulies in their list of winners? She's great in that show.

And to Enty - I don't mind being called a "girl," nor am I offended by a guy who refers to girls that way. I do it all the time. And I'm a bit of a feminist.

I watched but, like lifeiscrazy, was also watching the clock to see when it would end. Pretty dull and the opening was awful, but was happy to see Melissa and Kyle win. Red carpet interviews were boresville as well. No excitement in any of it.

IIRC most of the no shows were British actors who are likely filming right now. Don't blame them for not flying across the world to sit around for the off chance they might win.

The writing this time around was weak. Honestly, we all know that Jane Lynch is hilarious, and they just didn't give her much to do. And really, the only funny bits were the actresses beauty pageant bit (Amy and Melissa managed to make it seem spontaneous), Lonely Island and when Amy Poehler & Melissa presented later on. (And Jane Lynch's intro for the Entourage cast - but really, why have them on? The show's off the air)

I'm sorry I didn't see it, as I'm liking Will Arnett's new show, and would have enjoyed seeing Amy win. Thank goodness for the endless replays on the Internet.

I wish Justin would have shown up for Lonely Island, that would have been funny. Or even two Justins.

If they were going to have homeless looking Ashton and creepy Charlie on the show, they should have had them present together. That would have been classic.

And BOO to Fox for cutting Alec Baldwin's phone hacking bit! That is a company that seriously cannot take a joke.

Funniest Emmys ever! Loved the girl power of the best supporting actress in a Comedy impromptu sketch . Although obviously later on you realize it was planned, the moment it was happening, I laughed so hard! And how all the girls played their parts perfectly, was amazing!

Later on Amy and Melissa went after the guys telling us how the last year the men had more quality-driven roles was un-paralleled! You could actually feel some of the men squirm in the audience.

All-over it was great. Wish though more then Modern Family won in the comedy categories.

And yay for Peter Dinklage!!! Wish Jason Momoaaaann was there too. Only saw pictures of him during the after parties. Hot tiger!

I thought Jane Lynch was good. Loved the Jersey and Office bits.

I felt bad when the one lady had trouble getting up the steps.

I guess I'm old because I so did not get the musical number with Michael Bolton and co.

Was hoping to see January Jones.

Wish Parks and Rec got some nods, but I love me my Modern Family.

Mad Men winning just makes me pissed off that I had to endure a summer without. Way to go, AMC....Not.

Charlie Sheen made me SO uncomfortable. Not winning.

Forgot about the Charlie Sheen bit. It made me uncomfortable as well, but admired his guts on the almost mea culpa and wishing everyone well.

You really feel it that he regrets his stupid actions.

Susan said...

ITA, Rita. Sheen looked harried, but also humbled by the whole thing. What an ass. I kept thinking he was going to say something like, "Eff all y'all." And the lack of applause was deafening.

All in all, it was actually an interesting broadcast. Usually these things put me in a coma.

Rita said...

The lack of applause was actually very oddly equaled when her highness Gwen Paltrow arrived on stage. Now, that was uncomfortable, the presentation was badly done... And quite honestly, I kept on thinking that we can clearly see her boobs in that flimsy dress.

@lifeiscrazy, Yes about the Duckman comment. I was so pissed off when she ended up with Andrew McCarthy, and I had a big crush on him back in the day.

I didn't catch the show, but you never really miss anything with internet - where you can be selective about the clips you watch. It's great that Peter Dinklage won. I've been a fan of his for years.

I thought it was one of the best Emmys in a long time. I don't understand why some people on other sites are calling Lynch's comment about Ricky Gervais a cheap shot. I thought it was very, very funny, and Ricky's a big boy. He can take it. And if he can't, then he needs to stop dishing it out. I bet he thought it was funny, too.

I also thought Charlie Sheen was pretty classy (for him), wishing "Two and a Half Men" well. I think now that he's not on a crack/coke/meth bender, he realizes how much he has screwed himself. I thought Ashton was very funny in the "Office" bit, but he looks horrible with that greasy hair and beard. Ick.

This is the first time I've watched the Emmy's in years, and i really enjoyed it. It moved along at a good clip, had funny sketches (that Mad Men one at the start was awesome) and Jane Lynch was great.

Agree that Charlie Sheen part was a.w.k.w.a.r.d. It felt like there was more to be said or he was forced to say what he did. He got quite the applause when he first came out, I think people are already forgiving his meltdown.

I totally forgot this was on and only caught the last 15 minutes. I'm happy Barry Pepper won for The Kennedys though, he really was incredible as Bobby!

TheGoodRain said...

Thank you for pointing out the Rob Lowe bit! I was so happy watching all the nominees go up on stage and be one of the funniest moments of the night (planned or unplanned), and it seemed so petty to then call them 'girls.'

It seemed like he was trying to direct attention back to himself and slightly mock their funny-ness. Like, "Oh you silly girls and your silly antics."

MadLyb, I think the original ending of Pretty in Pink had her going off with Duckie, but test audiences wanted her to go off with Andrew. I was a huge Jon Cryer fan growing up. He was awesome in "Hiding Out"...

ITA TheGoodRain!!!!!!!!

Yeah, I thought the intro to Goop coming out at the end was so lame---she isnt THAT big a star where it is breathtaking to see her or something (except in her mind)...it just seemed annoying and overdone and ego stroking.

I did sorta get annoyed on Ricky Gervais' behalf- I know he's a big boy but saying he wasnt hugged enough as a kid and he's taking it out on hollywoood was...dumb. He CALLS people out on their legitimate stupid pretentious shit they do...its good stuff. I felt Jane was being a little pandering to the collective hollywood elite ego when she said that.

Oh, and Modern Family winning SO many categories was annoying to me too- it reminded me of when Every Body Loves Raymond would snatch up all those awards, bleck

one more thing-- when Jon Cryer came out with sleezy Kutcher and introduced himself as Ducky from Pretty in Pink I ALMOST DIED. Almost the best part of the night for me. Coulda only been ecilpsed by Molly Ringwald popping outta the backstage and joining him. (all the people from John Hughes movies really outta be together all the time anyways)hahah

Good mini-recap, Enty! I liked the Emmy's too. Apparently, Gawker thought it was all horrible, so I was questioning my personal taste for a moment. :)

I thought Jane did a pretty good job. I loved the Jersey Shore bit.

I love all the comedy ladies. Some other site didn't seem to get that they were obviously mocking pageant girls. I gasped when Melissa McCarthy won. I couldn't get into Mike & Molly but I just LOVE her (since her Gilmore Girls days). She seems like a sweetheart.

I was so excited for Kyle Chandler! Sad for Connie Briton (even though I'm only just on Season 4 of Friday Night Lights).

Oh and I loved the Lonely Island skit mostly b/c it included Michael Bolton with a sideways mustache.

Steve Levitan's wife has better comedic timing than most comedy actors/actresses out there. She was the breakout star of the Emmys!

RITA! Where did you see PICTURES of Momoa?

Idontwantaf*ckingblog said...

I think Jane did a solid job. The writing is so weak though.

And GOOP's dress, yikes, what a faux pas.

I hate that they didn't include Jeff Conaway in the in memoriam. Taxi was landmark TV and he was a part of it. Shame on them - and that "not enough time" excuse is total BS.

My favorite part was the producer's wife! We she looked at the camera with that face at her husband? I just died laughing. She needs to be in a series. Her timing is impeccable.

I just can't get into awards shows. Short attention span, I guess, although I will sit through some recap shows and I try to watch the snark on Fashion Police.

As for Duckie, I was always glad that Andie didn't end up with Ducky because he was so obviously GAY (not that that there's anything wrong with that) but I really HATED that she ended up with that pantywaist Blane (BLANE?? I guess that's supposed to be a WASP-y name? Ughhh).

I guess I always REALLY hoped that Andie would reform the James Spader character. *sigh*

And what a waste of a perfectly good Psych Furs song.

But I digress...
