Golden Globe Nominations

The Artist leads the way with the most nominations. The Golden Globes figured out a way to get Angelina Jolie to make sure she comes. They nominated her directorial debut as best foreign language movie. Bridesmaids against The Artist? Hardly seems fair. They saw 50/50 as a comedy. I thought a dramedy had the "dram" first for a reason. Of course if it were the other way around it might be coma which would be confusing. OK, so maybe they are right.

I can not believe Walking Dead didn't get a single nomination....maybe I need to look again. That series is wonderful!

I didn't realize Glenn Close was a songwriter. That's cool.

The nominations are what I expected. The GGs are all about celebrities getting drunk, anyway.

Why wasn't Spartacus Gods of the Arena on there? I think that (and Walking Dead) is the best TV going. I also thought Kate Winslet was awful as Mildred Pierce.

I'm thrilled that Clare Danes got a nod for Homeland, she is incredible on the show. GoT was great too.

That is a very good looking category for Drama - Actor.

I really want Laura Linney to win for The Big C. That is the best dramedy on TV to me.
Really don't care about most of those movies this year. The Help was about all I've seen so far.

I can't believe Glee got nominated and Community didn't. Also how did the girl from Secret Life got a nom. It's awful.

@BigMama - Last season of Walking Dead was amazing, the one that just ended, really frustrating!

Am I the only one who doesn't find New Girl funny? It's not even cute. The main Character gets on my nerves, and some of the men as well.

It's funny though how Angelina's movie is nominated in "Foreign Film"! I mean, don't many-many-many America Directors shoot movies abroad, and their movie is still considered America? Wasn't Mel Gibson's movies nominated with the rest of the Americans (Passion of the Christ and that other movie I can't remember about Indians?)

Rose: Shailene Woodley has been getting rave reviews across the board for her role in The Descendants. I wouldn't be surprised if she left the show in a couple of years.

ITA about Clare Danes. I think she is doing a great job and I went into watching the show as Not a Fan.

Buscemi as Nucky Thompson and Bryan Cranston as Walter White....I definitely would not wanna make that call. I LOVE both of those shows, I think Breaking Bad has given me a heart condition.

There are a lot of categories.

Rose said...

Layna that's interesting. She's totally turned me off to the movie but maybe I'll give it try.

What a great photograph! All I hear is old timey music in my head now.

I just noticed that Peter Dinklage is nominated for GoT, yeah!

Anyone watched Cinema Verite?

JessieE said...

@Rose -- I saw the Descendents, and Shailene Woodley was AWESOME. I am the mother of two teens who watch Secret Life, and I totally get your aversion to her and that horrible, awful show -- but it is obvious the girl has chops. She's clearly just given CRAP to work with on that terrible show!

@MsCool - I didn't like Kate Winslett's performance in Mildred Pierce either. I've just been afraid to say it out loud for fear of being skewered. Thanks for being brave.

I love Peter Dinklage, and his having dwarfism is incidental to his screen presence. Just watched Elf again, and his scenes were hilarious...perfect combination of intensity and comedy.

I really can't believe Sons of Anarchy has been so over-looked for so long. IMHO it is the best written show on television. I love Breaking Bad, Boardwalk Empire, Mad Men etc but I just don't think they are as well written and acted as Sons is.

Rita - Angelina's movie is in the Foreign Language category as it's set in Serbia/Bosnia.

Can't believe Gary Oldman didn't get a nom for Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. Oh and i'd swap out Dominic West for Ben Whishaw from The Hour. Freddie > Hector for me.

Lelaina Pierce said...

I am genuinely surprised at some of these nominations. I like New Girl, but I'm not sure it deserves a Golden Globe (Sorry Zooey! I still love you!).

I will never EVER understand why comedy and musical are in the same category. And isn't 50/50 about a guy with cancer???

I haven't seen TSLOAAT or The Descendants, but that Shailene is getting a lot of buzz.

Henriette said...

@Sio
I know! Gary Oldman has a lock on the Oscar for Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy. It is an amazing performance.

LisbethSalander said...

@Ms Cool and Little Miss, I did not really care for Winslet's performance either, and I'm a fan. It was not bad, but it wasn't great either, just run of the mill, but that's just my opinion.

Rita said...

Kate Winslet lost all my respect when I saw her all over Polanski on the red carpet. Wondered if she would let uncle Roman babysit her daughters.

@Sio, thanks you're right! My snark for Ange has no bounds!

And agree with everyone, Gary Oldman is SO the man this year for an Oscar!

Sherry said...

I am going to see "The Decendants" today. I am also surprised that George Clooney did the screenplay for "Ides". And I also LOVE Dinklage. @Figgy..You must see "The Station Agent" if you are a fan of his and have not. He's so wonderful in that.

breaking bad should have been nominated for TV show-the past season was AMAZING

Green Wave Gal said...

The Descendants was VERY good...you kind of forget you're watching a movie. It feels like you're in their lives. It was heavy, but very good. I didn't know who Shailene was and I thought she was great (understated) in the movie. :)

Wee S said...

Gary Oldman is just one of those men that even as he gets older I will always say 'I would'. He is just pure sex in any disguise...I know that can be abit too much information, but it's Gary Oldman!!!!

FrenchGirl said...

@Sio:Jolie's movie can be nod because it's a foreign language movie :they don't care about the country's set or money production(contrary to the CEsar in France)

i'm sad for Gary Oldman and i don't understand Clooney's movie and directing is nod (it's a 2-hours West Wing )

nancer said...

no 'sons of anarchy.' no 'breaking bad.'

the ONLY good tv is on fx, AMC, HBO and showtime. that's IT.

feraltart said...

I too agree with the posters that wrote Kate Winslet's performance was underwhelming. Totally agree. If you get a chance see Joan Crawford as Mildred Pierce in the movie of the same name. I couldn't help but compare, and Kate came up very short.

I have seen Cinema Verite and it was very interesting. My crush on James Gandolfini remains unabated.

Am jealous you can see all the nominated films/movies because we still get the raw end of the deal in Australia and are forced to wait for no reason.

Cars 2?!?!?! I tried to watch that and couldn't get past 10 mins. I really enjoyed the first Cars movie. Anyway - love that Peter Dinklage got a nod. American Horrow Story and Homeland are also great shows with great actors!

Lioness70 said...

American Horror Story is nuts but riveting. Bravo to Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk. I just hope they can keep the crazy up for next season.

I can't get into much on TV these days, but this show hooks you because you really don't know what's going to happen from week to week.

I hope Jessica Lange gets the Globe and the Emmy. It'll be VERY well deserved. Too bad more of the cast didn't get noms - all the actors are terrific.

JW said...

Nothing for Melissa McCarthy in Bridesmaids. I thought she stole that movie.

The Black Cat said...

I scanned down to ensure Jessica Lange was nominated also - she's fantastic in this series, she steals every scene. Not sure Ryan Murphy can deliver such an excellent second season as his first but Jessica will not dissappoint, that I can be sure of.

Jason Blue Eyes said...

Happy for John Williams but they nominated the wrong score. TINTIN is so much better than WAR HORSE.

Aaron Sorkin co-wrote MONEYBALL.

No Kirsten Dunst nom.

I'd hardly call Polanski's CARNAGE a comedy.

No Nick Offerman either.

They keep putting Sofia Vergara in movies but she's never funny in them. Unlike Rashida Jones who is great in everything she's in.

mooshki said...

It's total bullshit that Melissa McCarthy didn't get nominated. Ditto on Sons of Anarchy. At least it means we're bound to get some more entertaining rants from Kurt Sutter.

I'm glad Hugo got a nom. It's slow to start, but by the end I was so in love with the movie.

AAARGH!! My darling Owen up against The Gosling in C,S,L? How on earth am I supposed to pick one to root for?

Madeleine Stowe? Who did she fuck to get that nomination? Her face is too frozen for her to do any acting on the show! And even apart from that, she's ridiculously melodramatic. Katey Sagal was robbed!

I haven't seen Boss, but how weird to see Kelsey Grammer on a list with all those fucking brilliant actors.

Neither Glee nor New Girl is fit to wipe Community's ass. Or Parks & Rec.

Robin the Mad Photographer said...

As the Official NIN Fan of CDAN (hey, it even rhymes...), I do need to point out that Trent Reznor didn't do the score to The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo all by his lonesome--Atticus Ross also worked on it & is his co-nominee. Gotta give Atticus his props, now... ;-)

Henriette said...

Yes, Gary Oldman is one of my all time favorite actors! He was on Chelsea Handler recently and is just amazing. He is walking sex, but SO talented.

Jasmine said...

I am SOOOOOO happy that Midnight in Paris was nominated for both best picture and best screenplay- WOODY ALLEN deserves this win!!!

Also agree Jessica Lange is unbelievable in American Horror Story- she is riveting to watch- her and Tate make that whole show for me (and Dylan McDermotts body of course) hehehehe

Is Game of Thrones worth watching? Ive been thinking about renting it... Boardwalk Empire too...

I really want JGL to win for 50/50 regardless of the comedy/drama sorting. I just think he is such an amazing talent in everything he does and he deserves more accolades. /rantlikething.
