Nun Sentenced To Jail For Stealing From Collection Plates

Sister Mary Ann Rapp has been sentenced to 90 days in jail, five years of probation, and 100 hours of community service, for stealing $128,000 from two small churches in upstate New York. In court earlier this week she told the judge she stole the money because she was addicted to gambling. Rapp managed to take the money over a five year period between 2006 and 2011 by skimming off the collection plates and through other church funds she could get her hands on. Many of the parishioners affected showed up in court to support the nun, but the judge still ordered she serve jail time.

Admitting you have a problem is the first step.

I wonder how much time she will serve? You think she'll serve the full 90? Way to make an example out of a nun lol. If this was Lindsay she'd be out in 3 days lol

She isn't technically a nun.

She stole $128,000 - how the hell is she going to pay that back? I wonder if they fired her.

Thank you, bflogurl, for the "bad habit" reference. I will be chuckling to myself all day because of that.

The sad part is that she is being punished far worse than the multitude of priests whose crimes against children cost the church much more money and destroyed thousands of lives.

Cosign Tyger, if only the pedo-priests were sent to jail AT ALL.

Yea, I was thinking the same thing.... protect the pedo priests by shuffling them around to different parishes (where they molested again!) but by God, call the cops immediately on the nun who skims the 20 bucks a week off the collection plate.

Mary Ann Rapp does NOT sound like a real nun name.

True point, a non a miss. There is a difference between a sister and a nun. A lot of people don't know that. (For those who are wondering, nuns are cloistered and sisters work in the world. I wouldn't even think that there are very many nuns left anymore.)

I hope she can beat her addiction. It's just a nasty, indisious thing, no matter what the drug of choice may be.

I know several nuns and damn can those ladies party. Probably spent it on alcohol.

Bet you don't think you're so superior now, mother.

I once watched, in georgia, as "prophets" and "prophetresses" of a pentecostal church divvy up the collection plates of their church. Every Sunday that I was forced to go, I was treated with this spectacle. Never once was the money used for the congregation or preservation the church. I know that they used it on themselves. I learned then that God is free but religion is a business. And THAT business is intended to make a profit. And to never spend more than a few hours in southern GA.

That is a lot of money to only go away for 90 days!!

Love how she is prosecuted to fullest extent however the disgusting pedo freak priests are "relocated".

She's going to jail for 90 days. That's not the fullest extent of the law by any stretch for stealing $128,000. I do feel for her though. Gambling addiction is supposed to be really hard to kick.
