Wishing you were here - Chicago
16 candles
This takes me to a special place
Any song that has someone dying in it; usually country music.
Dance with My Father by Luther Vandross.
"Defying Gravity."
It reminds me of changing EVERYthing in my life--a life that I had worked many many years to build--to move from a major city back to my rural hometown and marry my childhood friend/now husband and work with him in his small business. It was hard to admit that the life I had built wasn't working for me anyway, and it's taken three years to adjust to this slower small town life. And friends did not understand at all. But worth it.
@VIP-LMAO! Now every time I hear that precious version, I will think of you.
Laughter in the rain by Paul Anka, reminds me of drives to the mall with my parents
Book of Love by Peter Gabriel (Magnetic Fields cover).
As cheesy as it is; Adele's Someone like you.
@ Karen: I just started to give country music a listen. Any recommendations?
Butterfly Kisses by Bob Carlisle *jokes*
songs never make me cry but two songs that give me that haunting, gut-wrench feeling are Holding Back the Years by Simply Red and Dont Dream its Over by Crowded House
I won't give up on us by Jason mraz
Casimir Pulaski Day by Sufjan Stevens
Three songs:
For my Mom: Madonna's Promise to Try.
For my son who died: Eric Clapton's Tears in Heaven.
Love lost song: Carly Simon's Do The Walls Come Down.
Theme from "Saving Private Ryan"
Asleep by The Smiths
Love Generation by Bob Sinclar
Wide Awake by Katy Perry.
If You Leave Me Now by Chicago.
I Won't Give Up by Jasan Mraz.
Still Haven't found what i'm looking for - U2.
Played during the funeral of a childhood friend when I was a teenager - she had CF and lived a lot longer than anyone expected. She died within days of her husband who also had CF.
"What's the Matter Here?" by 10,000 Maniacs. Not because of anything that happened to me, but the subject of the song is totally heartbreaking (an outsider's view of an abusive home and the victimized child). It's such a peppy song but ugh. Such a subject.
Stream Running Over by Apples in Stereo
Lightning Crashes
Seasons in the Sun by Terry Jacks.
How Great Thou Art sung by Carrie Underwood and Vince Gill live at a country women in music thing. I could listen to this a million times and not get sick of it, and I ALWAYS tear up. Check it out:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pLLMzr3PFgk
Tie-
Babe - Styx
Dance w/ my father - Vandross
One more time- the cure. Pretty much any song by Robert Smith.
Patience - Guns n roses.
I loathe Axl Rose but this song was #1 when my Dad died and was all over the radio.
Black by Pearl Jam ("I know someday you'll have a beautiful life, I know you'll be a star in somebody else's sky, But why, why, why can't it be, can't it be mine?")
Still Fighting It by Ben Folds ("You try & try and one day you'll fly away from me" and "You're so much like me ... I'm sorry" kills me every time)
I swear to God I'm choking up right now just thinking about these songs.
High by Jamar Rogers. It reminds me of where my life used to be, drowning my sorrows in all the wrong things but now how God has given me a second chance at living.
Endlessly - Duffy
"Sweet Sir Galahad", by Joan Baez, especially if you know the backstory. The line, "do you think I'll fail at everything single thing I try," gets me.
@Pink Picklegoo, I don't listen to much new country music because my car radio doesn't work so well after pulling my antennae out (it was broken and wouldn't go back in, so I had to yank it or leave it to fly around). Lady Antebellum, Luke Bryan, Josh Turner, Jake Owen, and Little Big Town are probably good to start on for current country.
For older country, you can't go wrong with Johnny Cash and Patsy Cline.
If you're looking for something a little off mainstream, I love the now defunct band Cross Canadian Ragweed. The frontman from that band, Cody Canada, is now in a band called The Departed. My husband isn't really into country, but he likes them as much as I do. They're more like Southern Rock.
"Unforgettable" by Natalie Cole/Nat King Cole.
Ripple Grateful Dead
Tears in Heaven by Eric Clapton
There You'll Be by Faith Hill
Only a Dream by Mary Chapin Carpeneter
I grew up with four sisters & it brings back a million childhood memories.
Country Song: Riding with Private Malone, ??
Christmas: Mary Did You Know, Michael English
Rock: Who Wants to Live Forever, Queen
Movie Music: Titanic Suite, James Horner
At Last by Etta James. Reminds me of my parents dancing around the dining room when I was a kid.
@chopchop, black by pearljam reminds me of being a teenager and so many first experiences! Good song.
@trainrides, asleep from the smiths is awesome. I know it's over hits something inside... love Morrissey.
Black gets me every time. Reminds me of an ill fated affair in my early twenties.
Kiss Me by Sixpence None the Richer- it reminds me of my cousin, but it's not as gross as it sounds.
My cousin Charlie died young, at 36.
That song was playing at a BBQ he had with his gorgeous fiancé right after they bought a beautiful house with this great pool and patio. His fiancé was singing it and he was watching her with so much love.
It's how I like to remember him.
He stopped loving her today = George Jones!
+1 on Pearl Jam's Black
More Than a Feeling, Boston
And I Fell Back Alone, World Party
Married With Children theme song. Every time I hear it I get a boner thinking of young Kelly Bundy and wacking off so I could get to sleep on Sunday nights in High School.
@VIP: It literally makes me sick to think that anyone takes Yoko seriously as anything besides a top flight gold digger. And her boy is a world class douchebag.
Hurt by Christina Agilera
The Beatles' "P.S. I Love You."
Theres way too many
Little Green by Joni Mitchell
She's Leaving byThe Beatles
Barenaked Ladies - Pinch Me
It's the most peppy song about heartbreaking depression, and was popular when I was hopelessly, desperately unhappy with no power to fix it at all. That song perfectly illustrated hopelessness but also the knowledge that some time in the future, you'll pull out of it.
Over You - Miranda Lambert. Blake Sheldon wrote it for his brother who died but couldn't sing it because it was way too emotional so Miranda did it for him. Came out just before my brother died and it just really hits home.
Bridge Over Troubled Water
You Spin Me Round (Like A Record) by Dead or Alive.
I used to dance to this song at a popular club while I was in college, with this guy who was a pre-med major. He was extremely popular and well-loved.
He was later killed in a horrible accident while interning at a hospital. A mental patient attacked a nurse and he intervened, and died in the process.
The mental patient was released not too much later (he was fine when he took his meds, the powers that be said). He promptly went to a grocery store and killed some poor woman.
The song rarely comes on anymore, but when it does, I immediately change it. Can't stand to hear it.
Reminiscing-Little River Band
Tears In Heaven - Eric Clapton
Angel by Sarah Mclaughlin, sad song that was played quite often at the hospital while visiting someone close to me. Believe by Cher also was on often (this was late 90's), but I just thought it was some dude singing a shitty song.
Yoko Ono is nuts. I can't believe that shit is considered art.
River of Tears Eric Clapton
I Will Remember You Sarah McLachlan
Omg VIP that was great!!!
The Dwarves "Motherfucker". Brings a tear to my eye cos it's the song that was playing the first time my beloved wrong holed me. Without lube, or spit.
Love that song and yor story. My roommate/ love of my life / former baby daddy's 3 year old always asks for Elpheba and Glinda and dances around to that. Reminds me of her and my love for roomie that is tucked away in a corner of my heart
@Ryan. In all seriousness, I love you for naming Sufjan. Xx
Agreed. That is a powerful song
Great call on "Black" chopchop! That songs gets me still. Now this I can't even believe I'm going to admit to it, but Phil Collins. Against all Odds! Makes me weepy :(
Thanks Karen, I don't know much about country music but I've recently started to listen to Lady Antebellum and Carrie Underwood and liked their music. I'll check out the rest!
Theme from St. Elmo's or Brokeback Mountain. Haunting without any words at all.
I made a playlist of all the songs mentioned here, that I could find, on spotify. Lol CDAN Listener playlist. I'll be weepy the rest of the day now. Thanks!
I Dont Have One =[
Dragon, how is the L&O theme not special to you?!
Ass on the floor by diddy dirty money and candy girl by ll cool j.
Wasted Time by the Eagles
Dont laugh -- I cry at the Anthem at most sporting events.
Other song wise: "Else" by Built to Spill and "How We Operate" by Gomez.
Johnny Cash's cover of Hurt. That makes me weep every time I hear it.
Tears in Heaven - Eric Clapton
Honey- Bobby Goldsboro
Sunshine (on my shoulders) - John Denver
Wind Beneath My Wings - Bette Midler
I know there are a few I'm leaving out. I'm a sucker for sad songs.
"I Will Go Sailing No More" from the Toy Story soundtrack.
@Ethorne It's special but it doesnt make me cry. =[
"Wonder" by Natalie Merchant. My daughter was born to that song.
I believe
Fate, fate smiled and and destiny
And as she came to my cradle
"Know this child will be able"
And laughed as my body she lifted
"Know this child will be gifted"
And laughed as she came to my mother
"Know this child will not suffer
With love, with patience and with faith
She'll make her way, make her way
Make her way, make her way"

Love those words!
"Book of Love" by Peter Gabriel.
After being diagnosed with cancer, and recovering, sometimes the mind wanders into very dark places.. this was the love letter song to my Husband and babies, to be played at my funeral.
"Silly Love Song" it came on someone's boom box during Senior Trip, and at first the guy was kinda shy that he had it, but the whole bus was singing it at the top of our lungs! Such a sweet time with cherished friends!
"How to save a life" OMG! kills me every time! about 9 years ago listing to Kidd in the Morning out of Dallas, he used this song as background music, while having a profile piece on a sick child for his Kids' Kids.. by the time I pulled into my driveway, total ugly cry! Body shaking ugly cry. Thankfully the child ended up being okay, but to this day, I can barely handle that song. (My middle son at the time, had a very scary illness/surgery and it really hit me hard, and close)
"Celebration" by Kool and the Gang, had that song playing when Hubby and I walked into our wedding reception!
"Do I ever cross your mind" By Brian McKnight. uuuugh! Don't we all have one of those songs that makes us think.. what if? :(
I have lots and lots more.. but these are some of the big ones.
Erik Satie's Gymnopedies -- can't listen to it without weeping. As for nostalgia, Pink Floyd Pillow of Winds and all I see are bubbled tapestries on ceilings.
oops how to save a life isn't that old.. it was the year it came out.
In other words..
CAN'T DO MATH! CAN'T DO MATH! lol
Ryan : I've had the privilege to see him perform live when he toured here many years ago. One of my fav LP's is come on feel the Illinois
"Love Bites" by Def Leppard as it reminds me of someone I loved back in 1988 even though he never loved me back but every time I hear that song it reminds me of him and takes me back.
@Lucy -- ITA -- that song is heartbreaking.
Real dragon - I'll share my Dwarves moment with you.
Black and Against All Odds do choke me up every time. Great tunes.
Country Feedback - REM.
Walk Away - Christina Aguilera.
@Rach That's nice =]
Ti amo -Laura Branigan,
Reminds me of a really dark time in my life when i just wanted to go in isolation, when i was around people i wanted to be alone and when i was alone i wanted to be rond people, my fiance and i bought a house but before we married he fell in love with someone else and asked me to leave. This song summed it up perfectly
what a wonderful world Louis Armstrong
Imagine John Lennon
Morning Theft Jeff Buckley
Depends what style you like. There's old, Willie, Waylon, and the boys. There's crossover, Taylor Swift, Carrie Underwood, Faith Hill. There is Texas Country and Red Dirt Country, Pat Green, Randy Rogers, Roger Creager. Listen online to KOKEFM, out of Austin Tx. They play awesome country, but no crossover. Good luck, I hope you find new music. I like most kinds.
Double ditto with Dance w/my Father.
It's been 19 years, and it still kills me.
Takes me back to a special time? Boys of Summer. Totally. Summer of 83.
Love Simply Red and Crowded House!!!
Baby of Mine from Dumbo
Lullabye by Billy Joel
I'm a total sap for my kids.
Black reminds me of my parents divorcing, going to a new school, best friend killing herself. The usual teen angst.
This made me tear up.
There you'll be reminds me if Josh Hartnett dying in Pearl Harbor. Crying as in snot and sobbing. Good times.
I always cry at be singing of the National Anthem. Pretty embarrassing really.
"Suddenly" by Billy Ocean was my wedding song. I tear up every time I think about how stupid I was for marrying him...
Go Rest High on that Mountain - Vince Gill. Anything But Mine - Kenny Chesney (our wedding song). The National Anthem. Silver Wings - Can't remember.
In My Life and Nowhere Man, the Beatles. Both off of Rubber Soul. Great album.
Even though John wrote the song about how he was feeling at that time, who hasn't felt out of place and sorts at some time in life?
Romeo and Juliet - Dire Straits. I remember hearing it as a kiddo with my dad and thinking, "I wonder if I'll be in love one day".
Maybe I'm Amazed - Paul McCartney. Our wedding song. Makes me sob every time but out of happiness :0.

Hurt - Christina aguilera
Hurt - Johnny Cash

Nothing - the script

Are pigs flying? I agree with the Count.
"Change" by Blind Melon.
@Sarah: What that, you hate on Yoko or you used to masturbate to Kelly Bundy?
:D
Led Zeppelin - Tangerine
Fleetwood Mac (or Smashing Pumpkins - it's the lyrics that kill me) - Landslide
Harry Chapin - Cats in the Cradle
The Cure - Fear of Ghosts (that one line has haunted me for so long: An the further I get from the things I care about, the less I care about who much further away I get)
Mine are pretty cliche, now that I re-read my list. Oh well.
Black gets me, too, but I associate so much other bullshit with that song, it actually diminishes how much it truly resonates with me...
Oh - and almost anything from Harvest Moon can evoke tears God, there are so many songs that make me cry!!
Ave Maria and You'll Never Walk Alone (Jerry Lewis sang it at the end of the telethon). They both remind me of my grandma. We always stayed up all night to watch the telethon together. I can't stand to hear the song since she died in 1989.
Ave Maria was played at her funeral. It was her favorite song. I can still picture her standing in her kitchen, cooking, and singing the song.
It's not to hard to jerk tears out of my eyes. The worst lately is Lee Brice's "I Drive Your Truck." I really don't listen to much country, but after hearing this story on Fresh Air, I find myself wanting to hear it when I run across it on the radio. It makes me teary every time.
Jeff Buckley's Lilac Wine and Patti Labelle's You'll Never Walk Alone.
Jeff Buckley's Lilac Wine and Patti Labelle's You'll Never Walk Alone.

These songs all have special meaning in my life. Some are sad, but they all bring back powerful memories for me.
True Colors- Cyndi Lauper (My husband dedicated it to me at out wedding and I wept like a baby while we danced. I had gone through a lot that year. Now I cry happy tears when I hear it :)
One Sweet Day- Boyz II Men
What A Wonderful World - Louis Armstrong
For my sister: Black Velvet - Alaniah Myles
For My Wife: Moondance - Van Morrison (Can't I just have one more dance with you my love)
and the one the just gets me every time, especially the video:
Hurt - Johnny Cash
There are some really good songs listed here, Black, Harvest Moon, What a Wonderful World, the National Anthem, the list literally goes on and on. I have two many songs to list, but a couple other songs that gets me which is totally cheesy is You'll Be There and Love Without End Amen, by George Strait. (Can you tell I love George Strait!?!)
A Theme From A Summer Place and Do You Want to Know a Secret by the Beatles are two of my favorite pick me up songs though (they both were part of my wedding). It can't always be sad tune time.
Fool in the Rain - Led Zepplin
Every Day is Exactly the Same - NIN
you probably won't see this;
thanks Patricia! Yeah I noticed I liked a few of the cross over country stars and figured I should probably give country music a chance. I'll definitely check out KOKEFM and the artists you mentioned.
Cosign on "Tie a Yellow Ribbon" and "Seasons in the Sun."
-------
"Für Elise" -- Someone on Youtube changed two notes of the song, making it no longer in a minor key. Made me bawl like a baby!
Where it goes:
da da daaaaaaaaa

It now goes:
