YES! Was working at a restaurant/bar ... on the big screen ... everyone was in awe and disbelief!

What, from the shoulder or sidewalk?

No. I caught glimpses of it but I never felt roped in to the whole drama.

I remember hearing the note he wrote read on the radio and I thought he had committed suicide.

I thought, well, he's done it but he saved the expense of a trial.

But then it turned out he didn't commit suicide.

I was watching the Houston-Knicks game six of the NBA finals and the chase got in the way of the game.

Yes. Remember being huddled around the TV at a friends house

Same here. John Starks was the motherfucking man. His battles with Reggie were awesome.

Troy Dyer said...

Yes! I remember being at a friends house and simultaneously being like WTF am I watching and glued to the tv

Jimbonius said...

Wasn't it a picture in picture during the game? I kind of remember watching it that way.

sandybrook said...

Yeah they had the game in a small screen mostly.

i watched while i was living in san francisco. that case was huge partly because oj was such a mainstream face in movies and advertising, he could have been the spokesman for johnsons baby powder. i hope he continues to wear the banner of washed up loser.

Alf Landon said...

The whole thing was faked. Almost everyone involved had a theatrical background

Flashy Vic said...

Nope, I'd never even heard of him. When I saw his face in the papers I recognised him as the black fella from the Naked Gun movies.

Was on the TV while my co worker and I were setting up someone's house that we were moving. I was a 19y/o and white, he was 45 y/o black ex Marine. Quite the interesting convo on the ride home, but not as bad as when Michael Jackson married Lisa Marie.

Dude got all pissed off when I said her mother must be flipping out, thinking i said it because MJ was black. "I don't care what color he is, he's a fuckin kid touchin weirdo." Dude stood firm on the blackness though, cause he was insulted MJ married a cracker.

Yes.

Yes! Remember "I see O.J."?

J said...

Yep. In a bar on New Montgomery Street in San Francisco.

I was driving from Pennsylvania to Minnesota when everything on the radio was about OJ's wife getting murdered. I showed up at my cousin's house and everyone was watching the Bronco chase on CBS. This was when Connie Chung briefly upstaged Dan Rather as the face of CBS news. I remember her as vividly I do the white Bronco.

I was watching the Houston-Knicks game six of the NBA finals and they put the game in a small window.I was already watching on a small tv so now the game was tiny and the only way i could see it was with my face right on the screen.. pissed me off,so i listened to the game my portable radio and went to get something to eat and was hoping it was over by the time i got back

Yes. I was at work and most of us were huddled around a TV. Now that I look back, I'm somewhat ashamed. After all was said and done it made me sick to see his smirk knowing that he got away with murder and started a race war. He still makes me sick. I've seen the pictures. Nicole and the Goldman kid were slaughtered.

DavidHowesCREBroker said...

The only thing "good" about this awful event was Johnny Cochran did his job!
He got his client off on a murder charge.

I still blame the prosecution for screwing an open and shut case up so badly; and, for agreeing to hold the trial in Downtown LA rather than on the west side in the jurisdiction where the murders happened.

Never bought that jury of his peers argument.

BTW: He's NOT revered in Las Vegas as I have seen recently.

He is selling selfie photos with idiots for $20 a pop.

Yes. My children were babies and I was at home with them. No cable, but it was on every network if I recall.

SO WEIRD my dad was pretty racist when I was young and his favorite black men were OJ and Cosby. Oh and Flip Wilson and Redd Foxx - thank God they made it out unscathed.

I do get the feeling it was because of that - per OJ and Cosby - that they were taken down in such spectacular fashion. Build em up tear em down, Inc.

Interesting, to me at least, was that I was working at a university when the trial was going on. The law school was across the street and we shared the cafeteria with them. So I watched the final days of the trial with the law school students and profs. They were ECSTATIC when he was found Not Guilty because it was a victory for lawyers. It was crazy.

Yes. I walked in the door and turned on the television. It was on every channel.

Iron Lung said...

yes, it was during my cousin's graduation party- the party basically ended up in the living room watching the chase.

Alma's Daughter said...

Yes. As it was happening.

Hanniam said...

I saw it long enough to catch what was happening and to realize it was going to be pretty slow going and decided to find something else to do and read about it later in the newspaper. I’m not really the core demographic they aim for on the news anyway.

Now, when there’s a chase winding through my own/friends’/family’s neighborhoods showing on the news, I will watch until the end.

Yes, again, remember interrupted Basketball and Al Michaels actually knowing OJ (and how odd and scary it would be to be on air during this).

To this day, I think those people that ran out on streets and overpasses with "Go, Juice,Go" signs changed the course of history. I think they were just caught up in the excitement and taking their shot at getting in tv history. However, I think AC was able to use those as signs to show OJ how beloved he was, and it was enough to get him back to fight and denial modes.

The rest of it was a slow-speed debacle, too.

E said...

Of course. Though my dad had to let me know what was going on, as he was watching TV at the time on the West Coast and I was getting ready to go out on the East

EyeSee said...

Yes. Went to my mother's house, and she was watching with a couple of friends. Crazy stuff. And when the verdict was read my colleagues and I huddled around the TV to watch that.

Lo Key says stop with the censorship already! said...

Yes. Trying to find out who the old people are, Enty?

Alf Landon said...

Nosey Parker -people are so easy to control. Just show them something on TV. To them it must be true.

tehbird said...

Same exact experience.

Harlita said...

Yes! I was in high school at my boyfriend’s house! I wonder whatever happened to him.

HushHush said...

I remember the basketball game, and how it over took the final.
Maybe today should be K-trash Day! That's part of how they/it began.
Ford is bringing out a rebooted Bronco. I wonder if the chase killed the original Bronco, but I think America's love affair with the SUV began with that chase. SUV's were considered trucks back then, and trucks were what trades people, and country folk drove.

Amartel said...

Yup. Everyone got pissed off pretty quickly that OJ was interrupting the game with his bullshit.

@Brayson--I wasn't on the sidewalk or shoulder. I was closer than thay!!

I was going south on the 405 (San Diego freeway--major freeway dissecting LA). So, I was going south and in the fast lane. I was listening to the radio covering the chase when all of sudden the traffic came to a complete standstill. We (all the drivers/passengers in the vicinity) stood at the barrier between north and south and watched Al Cowling and the Bronco go by followed by tons of cops. It was surreal.

Unknown said...

closer than "that"

Vita said...

That's a pretty cool, accidental run-in with history, Unknown!

Droktwok said...

Yes! I was 13 years old and I remember it vividly.

Jennifer said...

Yes.

And during the trial, I was sick one day. I had a bad fever and fell asleep watching, and dreamt that I was in court, very vividly.

HouellebecqGurl said...

Watched it live and watched every single day of the trial from Jan 24th 1995-Oct 3rd 1995.
A case that was lost from Day 1. That dumbass Marcia Clarke and her jury selections doomed it right off the bat. She understood nothing about the racial tensions and the aftermath from the LA Riots that were still looming large.
Mostly ginned up and driven by the media, btw.
Most people TO THIS DAY do not know that Rodney King was not alone when arrested, he had 2 cohorts with him. Why was King beaten and not his 2 pals? Because they calmly allowed themselves to be arrested, King, high on PCP, freaked the fuck out and began fighting the cops. Not that I'm defending the criminal LAPD, but if you've ever seen anyone raging out on PCP you know they don't go down easily. Also, another salient fact, those "racist cops," that beat King, were not all white bros. Some of the worst beating came from black cops but that didn't fit the shocking narrative the media wanted to present.
Which ended with 54 ppl dead, hundreds injured, millions in damages. The cops were NOT the good guys, King was NOT a good guy, but the media was far worse.

And then the big black man made you go down on him? That's hot!

Living in Chicago as a newlywed. my husband was watching the basketball game and I just got home from the grocery store. My husband was so upset because he is a huge Buffalo Bills fan and LOVED Oj, watched him play football live at the bills stafium. Hi far the mighty can fall. I wouldn’t give him the courtesy of stepping out of his way on the sidewalk now. I don’t know how these golfing dudes that buy him free golf all the time live with themselves.

OKay said...

I watched it for about two minutes, realized how stupid and boring it was and got on with my life. Found out later what all went down -- really didn't miss a thing.

Yes I watched the chase & the trial. It opened my eyes to the horrible abuse I was subjected to by my children's father. Domestic abuse wasn't talked about much back then; not many resources etc..but it opened my eyes to the fact it can happen to anyone, any race, any socioeconomic background & the danger I was in. Gave me the strength to pack up & never look back!

Yes had just gotten off work and heard on radio as I was parking. I ran into the house and turned on television until he was caught.

Guest777 said...

No, I believe I was working that day..but do remember it being on news like nonstop.

Nah. He might have been the black guy who wasnt on the down low. To tell ya the truth, i think he preferred vodka to pussy.

James Howlett said...

The school I went to stopped everything and the teachers let us watch the madness in real time. Also Sally Ride. And vision streetwear whyyyyyyy

Cheryl said...

I came home from the office and popped the TV on. When I came back into the room I thought it was COPS. I later saw the surrender on the news.

I was the third passenger but jumped-out with a second bag of evidence before the chase became a chase once I realized what was about to happen.
