Final Timmy Update

I thought about throwing out some more red herrings but everyone has worked so hard on this and done so much that I don't want to throw everyone in a tizzy again for the next 36 hours. Therefore I will refrain from driving you even more insane by throwing out hints that may or may not be hints.

It is indeed a dog who won a gold medal and the dog belonged to a black kid who was in Our Gang, but really wanted to be a woman. I don't know how you managed to put it all together.

Seriously though, from a quick read of all the comments it appears that for the most part, the entire thing including the how and why have been solved. There are about four or five comments that put it all together, and so I really don't know what to add except to tell you that it was an Academy Award.

And don't miss the Timmy/Shimmy BI thread over to the Blind Items forum at EZ to see Standing Bear's summary of what (s)he learned in researching this thing.

Great post, that. It's at the bottom of Page 8.

I've done a Photoshop with Brady/Blake/Merrill and I can't figure out how to get it on my comment here. Does anyone know how to do that? By the way, i'm totally on the Brady/Blake train now.
Thanks.

PS: "Angela" is a Gmail account I started to use as a joke. In real life, I'm a French straight guy living in Paris and I never dress in drag.

You know, if Alice Brady turns out to be the correct guess- how friggin' ironic that a straight guy, who never dresses in drag, and is using a woman's name, was the one to guess it first?? I'd love that!!! It would just seem... "meant to be". Two guys- one gay, one not- one dresses in drag, one doesn't- but both using a female persona "on stage" - and both names starting with the letter A.

Angela- or should we call you "Mangela" now?? LOL! If it does turn out to be AB- I'm glad it was you that first mentioned her name- even if it was just a lucky guess. It still seems "right".

Helena,

I'm with you that Timmy didnt get HIV through sex. I think he got it through a blood transfusion and hives can be contracted through a transfusion also!

Has anyone noticed in this pic of Walter Merrill that his right arm is completely covered with hair and the left one isnt?http://tinypic.com/view.php?pic=6cgpdmv

Just sayin...

Standing Bear you're comparing two opinions of the forum here to what happened last night? Nice shit stirring but it doesn't compute. And the deleted post - one of them anyway - contained my email address. Someone asked for it and I decided I didn't want it posted in public, so I posted it and once I got the email, deleted it.

Way to try and fan the flames by pulling people into it that weren't part of the fray to begin with.

Now stfu and let people get back on track here.

YahMoBThere said...

Oh, and the reference to the message board was only because she asked if she could message me there and I said I wasn't a member because I didn't like the *secret club* nonsense.

That was worth going back through posts to repost, wasn't it?

I hope you're not referring to my post as guessing "Joan Crawford" as Shimmy! I certainly NEVER considered Joan Crawford a contender; I was simply posting the facts, which was that Joan Crawford was one of the two names I found posted on 3 sites before noon on August 30th.

Dire Potatoe said...

No no. before that. Again, I don't want to go back and find it all, but at one point numerous peeps were posting on here very far-fetched guesses of very well-known people. It was obvious that they hadn't really thought it out and were trying to make things fit ideas that they had instead of doing real sleuthing. It was days ago from a fresh clue. The people who posted it hadn't read the previous stuff by everyone else I think...

Are we giving up on the Timmy identification and just waiting for Wednesday night?

I don't see how it can be Walter Merrill.

Don't we agree that Timmy's Hollywood-to-Death timeline has to be somewhere between 1930-1980 and 1935-1985? If Merrill's first film is made in 1925, that's off by a good 5 years. Does ENT stretch things that much in his blind items clues?

If you haven't looked at this site, it's a tribute to Arthur Blake.

http://phantomdragon.com/THELEGEND/blake.htm

There is a picture of Blake with 3 other very famous female impressionists, and he is much too tall to have been Alice Brady on a movie set. (You can get away with height when you're alone on a stage, but when you're surrounded by shorter men on a movie soundstage, the questions are bound to arise.)

This Timmy stuff was my first visit to this site, and I can't tell you all how much I enjoyed following all the trains of thought as they went east to west and west to east. And how much I learned as my Shimmy choice grasshoppered from Judy Holliday to Josephine Hull to Kay Kendall to Alice Brady to Margaret Rutherford.

And I was amazed to learn that Eve Arden was nominated for supporting actress for "Mildred Pierce" !! I did not know that.

And I need to learn more about Janet Gaynor, Louise Rainer, and Norma Shearer. So thank you, ENT, for getting us all so interested in the earlier days of Hollywood history.

Twisted Sister:

My intent wasn't to sidetrack the main discussion (which, notice, still goes on and around these off-topic posts). I didn't originate this; I was responding to the barrage of outrage that someone said something critical about this blog's posters -- ON ANOTHER BOARD.

I was pointing out the irony that people HERE are just as guilty of being judgmental and your recent post just proves my point!

The "secret club" nonsense, is especially revealing.

The only clique that I've noticed here is the one formed by some "old-timers" who feel the need to moderate, direct, critique, lavish praise or issue expletive-laden dismissals to those of us who joined more recently (regardless of how long we've been reading this blog)and/or don't toe the company line.

Everyone's opinions should be welcomed and no one should be talked down to.

Dire Potatoe said...

yeah. Maybe we're all tired. Ent seemed to imply that Timmy had been identified. I'm too lazy to go back and find everyone's guesses - I know there are some good ones, besides Merrill and Blake.

RE Blake and the photo with the other impersonators - Blake was 5'7" so says a primary source (who of course could be wrong). Those others were little guys. Maybe it's one of them? But I thought I'd checked them out and they didn't fit for one reason or another.

Too tired of it all.
Somebody get Timmy, will ya?

YahMoBThere said...

Standing Bear wrote:

Riiiiight....that's why when I expressed my opinion that I don't care for the message board here you were not only judgmental you called me out by name.

I guess you mean we're all entitled to YOUR opinion.

I wasn't part of the fray that took place last night, so using my posts as an example of how people can't along here was shit stirring among the people here. I expressed an opinion you say should be welcomed without anyone being talked down to. Talk about hypocrisy.

Dire Potatoe said...

Wow! I can’t believe everyone came up with the right reasons why. Cudos to you all!! And I can’t call shenanigans even with any red herrings. Those only made us learn more stuff. Look at all the posts with nothing to do with Timmy showing us Hollywood weirdness we never knew. That was worth all the reading time. I read most all comments but those weekends really threw me behind. And then there was my own lame research that sent me in circles but was really interesting and fun.

Angela, how did you do that?!!? Bien feit! Amazing guess or you must know something. Thanks for your update! Ditto Dire Pototoe!! And Dire Potatoe, way to put things together! Most enjoyable!!

Interesting thread here too. Alcohol and sugar at night. Caffeine and sugar in the morning. Carry on all.

This is driving me nutz! I went through every actress that received an AA from the first through the 30th - and although Alice Brady fits as far as not doing much after her win...How do you explain that she was the daughter of B'way producer William Brady? That's not exactly a bio where "facts weren't always checked thoroughly back in those days"....argh *pulls hair out*

I was on the Kay Kendall bandwagon, until ET said she won an Academy Award - back to square one *sighs*

I don't think anyone should be taking credit for solving anything yet. We don't know the whole story at all. And coming to work to have to sort through dozens of inflamatory posts was really frustrating. No need to explode now, and really, who cares what some internet nerd who can't even spell a simple word has to say? This isn't life, this is just some message board.

Anyway, I still think that Timmy created Shimmy. I just can't reconcile the clues (or non-clues, apparently) we were given with the AB theory that has sprung up. I guess I'll have to wait and see.

I agree with the Alice Brady guess (finally).

On the website with the Alice Brady photo gallery (The silent-movies page in the google search) there is a photo in the 3rd row. 2nd from the right.

It clearly is not like any of the other photos. The nose is long and pointed, where the other photos have the nose quite rounded. And the upper lip alos doesnt match

To me, this is a photo clearly of a man.

I believe this is the Shimmy/Timmy photo.

Thanks for a great 2 wks

I never even began looking at who Timmy could have been because I didn't have any starting point of reference and I don't think Timmy is going to be someone we can find easily without some real clues. The 'good friends with Katharine Hepburn' was a good clue, but I don't think it brought us there.

YahMoBThere said...

Calla, it's their stupid way of saying you can't talk about what is going on in the forum while you're posting, and there's a fine line that's easy to cross over. I've been firmly on the AB train from the beginning - the only real possibilities I considered were AB and Kay Kendall till she was notted, but even then, I leaned far more heavily toward AB - and while I haven't poured over every single AB picture ever, I haven't seen any two that are different enough to make me gasp and say "hey, that's two different people!" All young AB pics vs all old AB pics I've examined look similar enough that they could very well be the same person. Specifically, I'm thinking of when gillian superimposed an older pic onto a younger one almost a week ago (wow, time flies). This makes me wonder, although it doesn't fit with Ent's clues exactly, about the family resemblance factor, and AB's brother.

I'd also like to say how much I have enjoyed this BI, along with most of your comments and amazing research, it's truly been a pleasure to read. It couldn't have come at a better time - my only child went off to university at the beginning of the month, so this has given me something to obsess about in her absence. I don't know how many times I've started reading comments, which lead to my own research and looking up links that were posted, and then I looked up from the computer and suddenly it was 3 am. Too many nights like that! I've learned so much. So, thanks Ent, and thanks to you all.

Also, there are quite a few Alice Brady pics here:
http://triptych.brynmawr.edu/index.php

For some reason I can't get all the Alice Brady pics to come up with my search...someone posted a link that had FAR more results than what I'm getting. Can anyone make it work? There were some very old close-ups of Alice brady, and then some later pics that were mostly from a distance.

It doesn't seem like this link has come up very much in the comments, and so I wanted to repost it because it had a lot of pics that a lot of people here probably haven't seen.

Timmy as an actor and actress was in over 100 films and theatre productions... but this is about one role and one award.

Last night, Scot said:
It's my opinion that Timmy only played the role of Alice Brady once: the Oscar winning role in "In Old Chicago" All of the pics and the links to clips are of the real Alice Brady. This Alice Brady must have wanted to carry on but cancer...

Timmy was just a well known huckster that stepped in for ONE ROLE ONLY.

Then David said:
I'm quite certain that the Alice Brady in the movie In Old Chicago is the same person who later played in Young Mr. Lincoln. I have both movies on DVD. I also own My Man Godfrey, 100 Men and a Girl, The Gay Divorcee.

I believe that they are all Alice.

Then farygica said:
I don't believe that Timmy created his new persona so he could BE Alice Brady. It just happened that he would do "very well" as Alice Brady because the studio needed one pronto to finish a film. Was it becasue AB got sick, did she die, did she refuse to join the union???

Still trying to pound square pegs into round holes here... The Two Shimmy/ AB-A/B theory (feel free to bash):

Timmy, after spending a couple years touring as a female impersonator, returns to Hollywood, aces his screen test and spends the next few years playing supporting roles in B-films, serials whatever. With Wm Haines' advice and support. This is B-Shimmy.

Meanwhile over on the main lot, Alice Brady (for example) cannot finish filming... My Man Godfrey? In Old Chicago? and Timmy steps in to impersonate her for part of the film (don't you love how I can propose this without ever having seen the film?). This is A-Shimmy. This role garners a lot of attention and now he's got several personalities to juggle thus the hives.

I'm basing this --very shakily-- on the substitute that was needed when Jean Harlow died before finishing Saratoga. The stand-in was used for long shots only (been a long time since I saw it). What if A-Shimmy only stood in for a few scenes in Old Chicago? The studio wanted to conceal AB's condition and did not want it known that a stand-in was used.

I know, not really scandalous. Also doesn't address the unmarried A-Lister, who by my theory, would have to have been in a B-film with B-Shimmy. And further muddies the waters with another Shimmy to hunt down.

On a side note: last night I dug out my old VHS tape of My Man Godfrey --one of my top three favorite films of all time-- and rewatched the first half hour or so... AB did not stand still for a second, there are no closeups, it's a tape with poor resolution... but she just doesn't look like any of the photos posted.

Sorry for the length. Bramblewitch, thanks for the link, I'll check that out now.

Tammy,

I don't think the Bessie Love fits. Her career went on too long after her win regardless of the long break inbetween.

You know, I thought of Bessie Love a long time ago, but dismissed her, because it seemed that her career was too long, and her death too well documented.

What made me think of her was that she was in The Lost World, a silent film based on the Arthur Conan Doyle book, that had special effects no one had ever seen before (LIVE DINOSAURS!), created by Willis O'Brian, who would later do King Kong. This was the first time stop-motion was used to create whole creatures, and long sequences, with lots of miniatures and back screen projection.

Stop-motion animation remained state-of-the-art until Jurassic Park. It was used for quite a lot of Star Wars, and to create the fleshless cyborg walking scenes in Terminator.

I'm going on like this, because of the statement that in Shimmy's films, people saw things they'd never seen before.

I don't post often and so admire all the Timmy research you all have been doing. I did a little myself today since Arthur Blake has been discussed as a possible Timmy. There is a link to a picture of Arthur with 3 other female impersonators, one of whom is slight and blonde and labeled "Lynne Carter, " also known as Lynn Carter. What I can discover about Lynne Carter is that he was born in 1924 in NYC and died in 1985 of AIDS.
Here is what someone said about him, "Lynn Carter was a lovely man. In semiretirement and in declining health, but show biz through and through, he was a gracious host in the Madeira Room, greeting people warmly, full of hilarious asides and jokes. Had he been straight, repressed, and ordinary -- not that those things necessarily go hand in hand -- he might have been a sweet and kindly bank manager somewhere in Kansas."
I thought the Knasas comment was interesting. I have diligently read all the Timmy posts but am bleary now about the T guesses. Has Lynn(e) Carter been discussed/dismissed?

Yes AB/Walter Merrill (if he's Timmy) appears to be pretty fair skinned...but the eyes and hair (wig or not) were dark? That's been bugging me the whole time. Thoughts anyone? Because truthfully AB and WM look alike enough for my nongambling self to put my last five dollars on...but in the back of my mind I'm thinking of those pale features. Maybe I'm just Timmied out and can't think straight anymore.

The problem with Lynne Carter, FTR, is that he was well known as a drag queen. There was no secret about it. He performed for mostly gay audiences (and other fans of drag), and as far as I can tell, never had a career doing regular male roles.

Also, just for a laugh, the first time I saw Arthur Blake suggested, I misread it, and thought "WHAT!? DAGWOOD?"

Jolara said...

Wow C, what a find. Even if he is ruled out not to be Timmy, what an interesting fella. The best part of figuring out all this T/S stuff is the info gained along the way.

I don't know how anyone could say Alice Brady wasn't beautiful.

budford said...

Dawn,

Your second pic was the one that I thought looked different, but I still think the eyes seem the same.
Wasn't Walter somewhat of a tough picture find? I can't remember. The picture posted here reminds me of the picture of the Haines group that was badly captioned but led you to believe that the pointy nose guy was Jimmy Sheilds. That's what this picture of Walter reminds me of.

Jolara said...

Ok, I don't mean to stir the pot with this one, but a thought just occured to me. Just thinking about the whole Lynne Carter thing (again, sorry). The BI is quoted as stating:
"What he could do though was return to the theatre, and he did so, as a man and worked as a man until his death from AIDS related complications."
Lynne Carter WAS a man, a well known MAN who made his legit living as a female impersonator. He could sing, he was small, I mean he seems to fit the rest of the bill perfectly. This way he could do what he loved, theatre, dress as a woman (for whatever personal reason) and not have to hide it. Less stress, less skin conditions... Once again, if thought was already brought up and dismissed long ago, whoops.

budford said...

Jolara,

Lynne Carter is one of a few that played Shimmies. I just couldn't find any awards. Port of New York is a movie in which he played a female character.

Tinydancer said...

Thanks Jolara. That's what I was thinking and he fits the original description of having a way of capturing an audience unlike anything most people had seen previously. Maybe that first time he took on a female role, he recognized that he had the potential to be a female impersonator and this was his destiny. And at that time most people had not seen that type of review/theater.

Jolara said...

? Maybe I am confused?

I guess I need to do more research and less posting beforehand. I was thinking that Timmy-the man could be LC and Shimmy was AB.

Jolara said...

C-YES! That is exactly what I am attempting to convey. I think he played AB- enjoyed it, but had medical issues etc. Left hollywood and started over as a MAN doing female impressions because he was good at it. No one had to know he was once Alice. Life was better this way, he got his cake and he could eat it too.

budford said...

Jolara,

Why not? He could have been Timmy.

You know jolara, you could be right. I'm staring at pics of AB and LC next to each other and unless i'm starting to see things, they are starting to look alike. My only problem is that his eyes aren't quite as wide open as hers. I wish we had side by side videos.

budford said...

Jo and C,

I came across him while looking at the Jewel Box Review. I was looking for the elusive roommate. I would think he was in the review first, but hey, maybe not.

Jolara said...

I can't take credit on this idea, C- started it, I just stumbled and ran with it somemore, but I think our idea is on the same wave length.

Dire Potatoe said...

J and C,

That was the thought from the beginning with the female impersonators. Lynn(e) Carter was born in Cleveland OH somewhere around 1925 or so. He died of AIDS in 1985 when he was 60. He would have been 12 at the time of Alice Brady.

The way you interpreted Ent's description of Timmy on stage is what led to the Blake guess. I couldn't find another impersonator that fit the bill, so to speak...

Dire Potatoe said...

But also keep in mind that female impersonation is an OLD art, not something new and novel to the 20s-30s. Way, way back..

nomdeplume said...

atm said 'I hate to be a skeptic, but have you guys considered that Ent might have just let you all determine the answer to the BI and write the entire explanation for him? Trust me, I want this to be true as much as the next person, and I'm fascinated by all the research that has gone into this...I just really hope it isn't a big hoax. I'll be the first to congratulate Ent on such a fabulous blind item if this is actually legit and he has the proof to back it up!'

Actually this has been put forward before, particularly w/ the whole ZX thing. Reading the comments about that it seems that was a major problem for some former fans the "reveal" was copy/pasted from a poster on the board and there NEVER was any proof. There are other problems w/ other blinds & reveals if you go back & look. It's kind of funny actually. My favorite: an actress/singer pushing an A List model off a stage while dancing. The reveal was priceless: Paris Hilton & an unknown Canadian model who worked for the SAME company as Hez (regular & the moderator on the board) at the time!
Claudiasfix's comment earlier said it best for me. It's entertaining
fiction (bottom of page)but alot of people enjoy it anyway.

I have looked through the cast lists of what I hope is all the hollywood musicals from 1928 - 1931 (working on the AB theory - re-starts movies 1933, minus 2 years on stage) and come up with zero.

The only person who fit in any way was Nick Lucas 'tip toe through the tulips' and I can't see it being him

Gonna have to wait till the reveal now as my head is going to explode.

budford said...

Barbette and Kim August also played female roles. No awards. That's why I think the blind is possible. They're all over the place.

Unknown said...

As I've stated earlier, even if AB turns out not to be Timmy, we sure have found out that there's something up with AB. There's a story there. I also looked up those signatures on her photos and they are soo different. Not even close. Two of the signature are very much alike and the third is completely different. Shimmy did not do his homework when he started autographs as AB!!

StandingBear said...

Hi Jolara:

I was intrigued by your Lynne Carter theory so I checked into him again.

When I went to the phantomdragon website, the only picture of him I saw that could resemble Alice Brady was the one of Lynne Carter with two other actors from the film "Port of New York". I got excited to see a potential AB candidate, then checked her info on IMDB.

Then, I realized why I had discarded Lynne Carter when he first came up -- the Lynne Carter in "Port of New York" was an actress that once was married to William Talman (Hamilton Burger of Perry Mason). The phantomdragon website must have made a mistake (!) when they put that picture on the female impersonator Lynne Carter's webpage.

If someone's already brought this up I apologize -- I couldn't wade through all the posts to find the original Lynne Carter discussion.

Winston Ono said...

I just want to say I had a lovely time with everyone working on this...I'll never believe it's AB but it sure was a lot of fun.

Jolara said...

Awww, shucks! I think I will wait until tomorrow too (famous last words). WAY too many possibilities. So here was my story on what may have been...
ok, for arguements sake Lynne Carter (maybe he gave a wrong birth date?) was attempting to make it into theatre but because of his frame, he wasn't being taken seriously enough to get any leading male roles. So he gets a break and lands a leading part for an actress who couldn't perform and dresses as a woman and did fantastic. AB's father, the producer what's his name sees the show and hires Timmy to take over for Alice professionally who cannot continue work due to illness or whatever. So Timmy, who must be sworn to secrecy or risk being blacklisted performs as AB. Does great until fame hit hard, questions were asked and stress levels were elevated leading his health to go down. AB's father (the big producer) decides that continuing the charade wasn't working anymore when he wasn't being profitable for the company due to his skin condition worsening. So Timmy leaves and goes back "home". Only to return a couple of years later on the stage to do what he feels he does best, perform as a female impersonator. He can sing, he can dance, he entertains and everyone loves him. As Lynne gets older, he chooses to just work in the theatres behind the scenes, whatever, where one day he dies from an AIDS related illness. The End. :0)

I know, I know. Lynne has already been deleted as a Timmy suspect. I was just sharing my interpretation of things.

StandingBear said...

Jolara: At this point, your theory is as good as any other out there. It will be very interesting to see how ENT weaves his story to fit all the clues he fed us!

I still don't understand why Timmy would have taken the secret with him to the grave. Why in the world wouldn't he have wanted the whole world to know his secret?

I can't imagine any kind of performer not contacting reporters near the end of his life and saying, "Have I got a story for you! Come on over to my place with your tape recorder."

It baffles me that Timmy, who apparently gloried in the spotlight, would not seek the ultimate claim to fame: being part of the biggest Oscar story of all time.

YahMoBThere said...

Oklahoma, I think there may be a couple of reasons. Maybe Timmy was private. Maybe he was afraid he'd embarrass loved ones. But most of all, I wonder how Timmy felt. He had an average career as a man and a stellar career as a woman. This might have played with his mind a little. Maybe it was a frustration rather than a thing of pride.

Winston Ono said...

Oklahoma I've struggled with that as well. In the 1980's I worked in and around the New York Theatre. Theatre people love to perform and tell stories. I can almost picture an older Timmy sitting in a gay piano bar night after night telling the same old story over and over to any one who would listen as the alcohol flowed freely...:)

dawn said...

I've wondered the same thing as several of you regarding why this story hasn't come to light before now. Especially if the 'why' involves the Williams Haines/revenge angle, I would think that the deception would have been revealed shortly after the fact, in order to embarrass LB Mayer.

History Hunter said...

But if the WHY was that William Brady (father) found a new Alice Brady as a new 'cash cow' as he was broke and something had happened to the original. Then perhaps not many people at the studio knew and the William Haines connection could be a red herring.

YahMoBThere said...

Melster...lol is right.

Maybe it had something to do with filing false info re social security / union pension / tax returns. Or that he walked off with an Oscar statuette all those years ago. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science? Those guys are relentless.

History Hunter said...

Maybe Alice/Shimmy couldn't attend the Oscars because of an outbreak of hives.

dawn said...

melster, it could very well could be that the 'why' had to do with William Brady Sr, and that the motivation was greed. For some reason, the Williams Haines mentoring hint rang true to me. Maybe that's simply because I was taken with Haines' and Shields' against all odds-type love story, and what was given up by Haines for the relationship. I'm a sucker for things like that. ;) It's always possible that Haines mentored Timmy anyway, on behalf of Brady Sr, and the 'why' has nothing to do with revenge on Haines' part...or, that the main reason was greed, and Haines agreed to help for his own reasons.

twisted, in my little revenge scenario, the point I was trying to make is that it would make no sense to keep it quiet if the motivation was a big "screw you" toward Mayer. But as I said above, I'm not stuck on any one particular theory as to the 'whys,' there are several that sound plausible, and make sense to me. I'm so excited about hearing the whole story tomorrow! :)

To my surprise, I was able to rent both In Old Chicago and My Man Godfrey earlier today. I'm looking forward to watching them.

Unknown said...

Why in the world wouldn't he have wanted the whole world to know his secret?

If Timmy was a substitute and not a "created" actress persona, maybe the real actress was still alive at the time he died and he liked/respected her too much to reveal their shared secret.

Winston Ono said...

Twisted Sister I just went on another one of my typical Timmy roller coaster ride...my first reaction to your comment was YES! he was being paid to keep quiet! That I can get behind. twisted,

Duh, I just realized what you meant, that the motive could have been revenge, that the deception was made known to Mayer, and that Mayer then paid off those involved not to make it public, to avoid greater public embarrassment. Great point, yes, that very well could be.

I just clued in to your meaning after I walked away from my computer. Maybe I should try doing that a little more often. ;) Sorry for my confusion!

Winston Ono said...

Thank you Dimes! I can buy that as a reason.

QUOTE:
"I can't imagine any kind of performer not contacting reporters near the end of his life and saying, 'Have I got a story for you! Come on over to my place with your tape recorder.'"

He may not have revealed it earlier, because he didn't want to out the A-list gay actor, and especially after all the people were blacklisted in the 1950s.

He probably expected to live longer than he did, and may have planned to write a book "someday," then when he realized he was dying, may have stayed away from reporters because he may not have wanted people to know he had AIDS. This was the mid-1980s, remember; even gay men were abandoning friends with AIDS. There may not have been much time between diagnosis and death, for him as well, because the average back then was 15 months, and for someone his age, it may have been shorter.

That's all speculation, though. It does seem unlikely that, were Timmy Lynne Carter, this would all have stayed secret.

Long-time lurker. Have enjoyed (read: been obsessed) with this. I also initially thought about doing research and found others doing it light speeds ahead of me (do any of you work jobs?)

Great work everyone. Dire - your 2AB theory was genius and was what really sparked a lot of enthusiasm here - great work. I also understand the hardcore researcher's frustration when people comment, without having read the original BI even, for the hundredth time only to make absurd guesses or ignore posts that have been dissected more than thoroughly, though 98% of the time people were patient and kind to each other.

The research and exposure to information was great. I was especially happy to see the books of William Mann getting much-deserved attention (especially Wisecracker and Behind the Screen).

I would love for it to be Alice Brady, but if it is so without sufficient proof, I think we'll all have been had. Still, what a wonderfully entertaining way to be had.

My last guess, though it makes no sense, is Fay Bainter. Nawww. Damn. Sh**. Help!

I have never really been on the Alice Brady train...but her IMDB photo is really weird. It does not look like any photo that I've ever seen of her on the other sites. Twisted, tomorrow is going to be an exercise in patience for sure. But worse, I can’t imagine life after Timmy :). Heaven knows, as we have all learned, there would be plenty of material for them to draw upon.

Eileen, I hear you! That's the saddest thing about this for me, was finding out how very screwed up some of my favorite stars were. It's probably good I've been yanked out of denial, but ignorance really was bliss.

Well my autographed photo of Walter Merrill arrived yesterday. It says

"To Charley-with the best o' the best o' it.
Sincerely "Yes"
Wally Merrill '30"

I have looked over every square inch of it and haven't found a scar. Even though it is a black and white he looks to me like he had a pretty nice tan. His arms are not as hairy as it showed in the original links posted of the picture. There is a shadow that is running up beside his right arm that online looks like hair but isn't. His nails were manicured perfection.

Well, all in all I think he was a cutie and I know most everyone thought he was creepy. A strange purchase for me but I guess it will end up being a good story.

Tick Tock Tick Tock...

Yours in Timmyness, y'all!
Ditto on all the global interest~ that's really cool. I think it's pretty impossible that the answer is going to live up to everyone's efforts though. But the fun was in the ride - EVERYONE contributed to this. Thanks, EntL.

I guess I was deluding myself when I woke up this morning thinking there would be pictures of Shimmy and Timmy on the front page of the blog. Oh well - Phil Spector and his beehive hairdo will have to suffice.

Actually, it's more Clay Aiken than Connie Stevens.

I believe Alice Brady was shimmy and Arthur Blake was Timmy. Her death is listed as 1939 with 79 movies. Arthur blake made 18 movies and was a famous female impersonator. He began in movies as an uncredited part in 1936, and died in 1985 and was from Altoona, Penn. I believe that William Haines was the early lover of Shimmy. Any opinions?

How can it be Alice Brady/Arthur Blake if Alice's credits begin in 1914?

Blake had to have lied abouit his birthdate? That's the closest I can come to identifying them. I'm a first timer, but this has been exscrutiatingly fun...now I am hooked.

Hahaa....

It's funny to see grown up like people lying on the floor, stamping their feet and pounding their fists crying, "TIMMY!!!!"

Me? I just went and cut all my hair off 'cuz it's taking too long.

Actually, in one of my many hours of desperation, I actually considered Moe for Timmy. He has a screwed up nose and his mom dressed him in girl's clothes until he cut off his own hair with a bowl, resulting haircut becoming his trademark.

I'm a dedicated lurker and have been following this mystery since the beginning. I was obsessed at first and have started losing interest since I'm not completely excited over the prospect of Timmy/Shimmy turning out to be Alice Brady. I wanted it to be somebody *shocking*!

So last night I dreamt that Timmy turned out to be Paul McCartney. It was so funny. I was running around David Geffen's huge marble bathroom where he had Emmys, Oscars, Grammys, and god knows what other awards displayed all over the place. He was JJ aparently and those were all the awards that Shimmy collected.

But then I ran into Lindsey Lohan, her little sister, and dad at a coffee shop.

I will take that as an indicator that I need to take a break from CDAN and hang out with my real friends for a while.
