A Lottery For A Funeral

If you want to attend Michael Jackson's public memorial you wont have top pay $25 to see it, but you will have to enter a lottery and hope you are lucky. I still am not sure why they are not having it outside at the LA Coliseum instead of at Staples Center. Instead of 11,000 people they could have had 100,000 people and Joe Jackson could have made a lot more money selling t-shirts.

Anyway, if you would like to submit your name for the lottery, you need to register by Saturday at the following website. It is at 10am on Tuesday which I don't understand at all. Why have people take off from work when you can have it just as easily at night? I think they should have done something like The Apollo did which is they had it all day and shuffled people in and out. They could have one every two hours or something for a day. I don't know. It just seems with the level of interest in this memorial that 11,000 people seeing it live and another 5,000 watching on video screens next door is not really the way to go.

I thought California is almost bankrupt. Who's paying for all this?

"Jan Perry, acting L.A. mayor, asked for donations to city departments to help the foot the costs of accommodating the city services associated with the memorial."

Also, only U.S. citizens are eligible for tickets. There are going to be some pretty angry people in LA that day. I mean more than usual. (ba DUM bump.)

Honestly, I don't understand why anyone would want to go to this? It is not like it is the real funeral.
Will they be bringing his body in? Or is it merely a bunch of people getting together? I will never understand the need to surround oneself with strangers in a most public way.
Ugh.
Sounds awful to me.

Why in the world is it only U.S. citizens? Is it because they don't want people flying in from elsewhere to be part of the memorial? That seems kind of counter-productive.

Wow! I guess they're just trying to satisfy the die hard fans. However if they didn't have a "memorial" service the fans would be in an uproar and never go home and back to their families, jobs, etc.

Just checked the Staples website. All U.S. residents are eligible for tickets, not just U.S. citizens.

Residents means anyone who has a legal right to reside in the U.S., which includes lots of non-citizens in the Los Angeles area.

DISGUSTING, PATHETIC MONEY-GRUBBING PLOY.

Sorry, had to yell that one out loud.

holding it at the rose bowl would've been better than downtown. the rose bowl peeps and surrounding areas of pas/glendale are used to high traffic and know how to control the ebb and flow. besides, helicopters will be swarming over staples all day long. i'd be one pissed air traffic controller. it'd be better designating a fly zone over the rose bowl.

dummies.

Thanks for the correction, Nutty_Flavor.
By the way, now I want a Snickers. DAMN YOU!! : P

they don't want a million people in downtown L.A. can you blame them? i'm sure they made the US restriction to keep the throngs of fans from all over the world from descending on L.A.

no matter what they do, it's going to be a hot mess. i feel sorry for L.A.

Yep, this is gonna be a cluster-fuck. Another Joe Jackson production.

I think the reason why Staples was used is because AEG, who was sponcering Michael's upcoming tour, owns it as well. So, it's basically free for the family.

FFS! This is just disgusting. Paying to go hang out with strangers grieivng over the death of a pedophile. Fools and their money and all. Bunch of idiots. I want to go sell t-shirts and buttons and sun hats to the fools myself, get me some of that cash. Morons.

@Binky don't forget selling the "Jesus Juice". I'm sure that would be a big mover.

I said it would be a circus. All that's missing is the three rings.

I am so glad I am not the only one who finds this utterly tacky. Yes I understand he was a huge star and blah blah blah blah, but this is just over the top. Are they going to prop a glove over a microphone and play Man In the Mirror over and over?

I am getting pretty tired of the MJ coverage in general. I kind of saw the tacky memorial service coming and I can sort of understand the need for it and even that he would have wanted it that way, but enough is enough. I usually watch ET and Access and those shows in the afternoon but I haven't for the last couple of days. Too much. And if you don't like it, I suggest you do the same. There.

Problem solved.

Oh wow, think yourselves lucky you only have a lottery to deal with. If you're a non-American you cannot even get INTO the freaking thing because it's 'only for US citizens'.

Despite the fact MJ was a globally recognized superstar and we ALL paid money to follow him/build his career.

Shambles.

can you imagine all the asian fans that would decend on LA is they opened it to all countries? it would be a fuckin logistical nightmare. MJ has some diehard fans around the world.

i'm with you Harriet, i only read CDAN, Dlisted and TMZ and only watch Larry King at night, the rest...no thanks.

even Anderson Cooper, Mah Boo, is turning tabloid with all this MJ crap. enough.

speaking of circuses, isn't the circus going to be at staples center the next day? why didn't they just combine them?

same dif.

@ardleigh: Jesus Juice? People attending this stupidity would have to be high to to pay money to go to this freak show, but you're right: they'll need to keep their high going, so good idea! You can help me with my concession, and we'll split the take (and man, I'm expecting it to be HUGE! We can sell these dopes ANY damned thing, and they'll be shitting themselves with happiness to have it!).

not only that, but the local news broke into regular programming with a "special report" to tell us all about it.
if you are a lottery winner, you will need given a ticket and TWO (not one, mind you, but TWO) wristbands.
dude on the mic stopped himself just short of saying this was to prevent scalping, but you know darn well some people can slip out of those wristbands (i've done it myself, but not for nefarious purposes) and there WILL be scalping going on.
traffic control is going to be outrageous, people will still try to get in, this is liable to rival a football (as in soccer) match.
sheer lunacy, i tell you.
pookie, i don't think the rose bowl would have them. they may be used to the traffic, but old-school pasadena residents wouldn't put up with this sort of mess. the coliseum maybe, but not the rose bowl.
lutefisk, the above mentioned local news also went out and tracked down poor bubbles. he's 26 and in the old folks home for trained and/or abused animals. long forgotten by MJ, i'm sure.

Why not? His life was his circus, I expect nothing less from his death.

I am fan of his music, him - not so much since Dangerous in 1991 and his Superbowl appearance.

I was personally distraught when Freddie Mercury died because I grew up listening to him. I will admit to having a bit of the same reaction to this, but there is so much sleaze on the sidelines that it is becoming disgusting.

I don't watch TV so I am missing that coverage, thank you. I read this blog and one or two others and cruise the news wires and websites during the day because of what I do for a living.

Other than that, I don't think I am missing anything, but I will always regret no more music from the tortured genius that he was.

I am soooo fucking livid at all this bullshit!!! With Joe-father of the year-Jackson around constantly selling his shit record lable and other myraid things and people being interviewed on Extra that used to backup dance in his music videos in the 80's>>>ahhhhhhhhhhh!!!! These people are sooo fucking annoying and now this bullshit lotto! The man was so fucked up and this was due in such large part from his father at a very early age exploiting his talent and turning it into something Michael had no control over and which, ultimitly, ruled him and consumed him turning him into the weirdo with no concept of reality that we knew.
For this shit to happen now really makes me sad, the negative shit that consumed him just keeps on swirling and coming at us and building momentum even after his death- I for one, though I am a fan and mourned his death- will not watch this spectacle anymore, or pay attention to it. Michael RIP
