Blind Item #8 - Athlete Investor - Mr. Hedge

This recently retired former A+ list athlete is off to a very shaky start at his new big venture.  The whole thing is going to be an epic disaster.  He set the whole thing up to be a heads-I-win-big and tails-I-break-even scenario for himself.

As someone who has seen the inner workings of the deal - his investors will see most of their money gone,  within just a few years.  Our athlete has far less of his own financial skin in the game, than what the public has been led to believe.

  8. Definitely Jeter. That team is a disaster

  9. I don't think Jeter paid any money for ownership, from what I remember he is receiving a salary from the team, plus other perks.

  10. Jeter has a deal based on this team turning a profit. He has very little invested in the team financially but he makes a killing if he's turns things around.

  15. Jeter. The investors will lose nothing, because the value of the franchise will still go up.

  19. Jeter is only part owner (tiny part) of the Marlins (also CEO). I don't think there's a "his investors" type situation there. Also, it's no secret that Jeter doesn't have a majority stake. Becks, otoh, was the impetus behind his MLS team and I suppose you could call his ownership group "investors." MLS gave him the option to buy a team at a discount when he retired, but he would of course need more money. His celebrity in the game would be far more important to any deal than Jeter's, so it would make sense to have him out front as an owner and not front office like Jeter.

I'm going with Becks only because I can't think of anyone else besides Didier Drogba and his USL team, and while one of the GOATs in the EPL, you all don't know who he is.

  20. Been a few years since Beckham retired, so it's not him.
