Blind Items Revealed #8

August 10, 2018

This pay cable company really wants a spinoff of that ending soon hit show. So, they assigned four pilots to two executives, neither of whom have any idea about the franchise other than the episode or two they watched of the show. This is turning into a disaster and the executives spend more time taking shots at each other than they do anything actually substantive. So, for all of you hoping for something good and your fix after the show ends, you may be disappointed.

HBO/Game Of Thrones

I think it'll be fine. GOT went way off the rails even before they ram out of book content and it's still getting massive views.

How badly can they fuck it up with GRRM feeding them information?

Every single ad that pops up at the bottom of my screen on this site is yet another product/movie/whathaveyou that I will go way, way, WAY out of my way to avoid ever spending any money on.

@notthsagain if you havent read this yet I am on this site because there are actually interesting BIs that are not easily proven to be bs by using logical thinking...

@Do tell -- install an Opera browser on a desktop or laptop. Turn on ad blocking. You won't see ads.

Thanks for the tip, Christina!

@Cree

Hell, it was going off the rails when it was still supposedly in sync with the books!

@Do Tell
You want to try AdBlockPlus, I don't get any ads here using it.

I just have regular old Chrome with Adblock and I've never seen an ad on here. Hope you get rid of the ads, Do Tell.

Try something called free adblocker browser it's a more efficient version of the chrome browser (that doesn't do a good job blocking shit on Android) blocks most everything, no problems here.

GRRM ran out of ideas by the end of book three, and spent several years on books 4-5 introducing new, irrelevant characters and following a couple of his favorites around doing nothing. They've already used up his good ideas, so they'd better have other ideas of their own.

Like Robert Jordan, GRRM is a great world builder (better than Jordan) but not very good at bringing it all home. I have a feeling that by the time he finishes it, if he does, the theories will have been much more interesting than the real ending and many things that seemed to be foreshadowing will have been forgotten or discarded by GRRM.

This blind item is quite dubious.

Game of Thrones is one of the most popular shows on cable. It's far from hard to pick some executives who have followed it. If they have to pitch their project, it would be obvious to find out which one has a clue about the universe and which one doesn't.

Besides, there are four or five prequels/spin off in development, and it was never the intent to green light all of them. And at least one project, which has reached the pilot stage, has been developed with George R.R. Martin, who may have a clue about the show.

https://www.theverge.com/2018/6/8/17442976/hbo-game-of-thrones-spin-off-pilot-jane-goldman-george-r-r-martin-tv

The real stuff which has made the news lately is that AT&T is totally clueless about fiction development and assumes that HBO can magically triple the amount of content they create each year.

Never watched an episode of 'Game of Thrones'..looked like some Dungens Dragons geek crap? Next!

This is typical corporate behavior. The powers that be assume this will be a slam dunk those that are plugged into the politics of the organization will insert themselves for the ride.

re ads. I have Firefox with Adblock plus and no ads.

It's Game of Thrones, one of the last shows everyone in America people group watches live. Why did they assign two executives/show runners who hadn't watched the entire series to create spinoffs? I gotta think there were others who were just about as qualified and who knew the show that could have done it.

postaldog said...

Martin was out of gas after the fifth book. If he finishes the series, and I don't think he really wants to based on his various interviews, all he's going to do is take what the showrunners have done with the series and bloat it up to fill a book or two.

It's a real kick in the nuts to those who slogged their way through five narrative dense novels. You'd think he'd be ashamed but -- $$$

Agree that this is dubious. The prequel they’re working on is using some of the same writers and directors as the current series, so people who intricately know the story and this world are involved, This show is HBO’s cash cow, they’re not going to risk messing up the chance to extend the franchise.

@Karma, you have no idea what you’re missing! I didn’t think it was my genre at all, but caved and tried it last year. I was so wrong, it’s the best TV show ever.

Back in the US, and at the airport, I found the updated internet edition of The N Y Post with a wicked witch of the East photo of Asia Argento on the front page. It appears, while crying and carrying on about being molested to the world, she had been paying $380,000 to actor and musician Jimmy Bennett, who played her son in a film a while back. He alleges she sexually molested him when he was a teen. Wonder what Anthony Bourdain would have thought of those allegations? She is a shrike. I have been telling people for a long time that she is poison. I wish Bourdain had never met her. And yes, she was directly responsible for his suicide. Read the European papers. It's all there. Leaving NYC in the morning for New Mexico and no Internet! I know some of you CDAN-ers are thrilled with that. This site has become a snooze fest. Enty must be on vacation in Siberia. Bye bye.

You guys are really missing out, if I hadn’t seen this brilliantly written subculture.subway ad intricately describing to me “How you benefit from our clean food profile” I am entirely, wholeheartedly sure I would not have eaten today and died. So ads = good

Yeah just as how Disney was not going to risk messing up the Star Wars Franchise with Solo?

Angela said...

Solo was written by Lawrence Kasdan, who wrote two scripts in the original trilogy and was also involved in The Force Awakens. It was directed by Ron Howard, who had worked on Willow for Lucasfilm, and who had been on Lucas' shortlist of directors considered for Episode I (and presumably the entire trilogy), along with Spielberg and Zemeckis. It wasn't enough to make Solo work, but at least the people involved knew their Star Wars.
A better comparison would be with the Holiday Special, which had been handled by clueless TV executives and go-to writers such as Bruce Vilanch. There were other factors, such as the fact there was just one single film at the time for base material and Lucasfilm didn't know either what they wanted for the special, apart from setting a few rules about the Wookies (no subtitles, etc.).

The GoT spinoff projects may turn up to be failures, but it's very dubious that HBO would only get people with a passing knowledge of the show and its universe. For starters, most of the executives who had worked on GoT are now available. There's no script in development, filming is finished, all that remains is postproduction. That's why it makes no sense that HBO would pick people who know very little about the show and keep them in charge even after one year.

The Asia Argento story also shows how much of Enty's claims about Bourdain being murdered because Weinstein wanted the two of them dead was bullshit.

I don't know if the Jimmy Bennett story is true, Argento may lose some credibility due to it, but it won't make the numerous charges against Weinstein go away, as there are many more accusers. Dozens of actresses have told their stories, directors, such as Peter Jackson, have gone on record to explain that Miramax asked not to hire particular actresses (who had all refused to sleep with Harvey), Weinstein is finished (and ruined) in the industry. Besides, Weinstein faces charges in the US, while the rape that Argento had spoken about took place in France.

Also, if the Bennett story is true (and it's easy to believe that Dario Argento's daughter could herself be a weirdo), why would Plan A be to murder two celebrities and disguise it as a fake murder-suicide, while it would be easier, and much more satisfying, to out her as a creep and a sexual predator?
Just picture the perspective of finding out in the news that Asia Argento had killed in a French hotel her boyfriend Anthony Bourdain before committing suicide (or that Bourdain had killed her before committing suicide). Once again, how would that help Weinstein for his legal case or his statute as a producer? The guy is done, and the last thing that can help a rapist is to become a murderer...

The Bourdain blind item was the straw that broke my camel's back. Not because of the French setting, but because it showed that the writers on this site were ready to do anything just to get more page views or attention for their causes. Like taking advantage of a celebrity suicide that had taken place just hours before to scream "MURDER!!!!!", write a story that doesn't make any sense out of it, and connect it with the site "greatest hits" (Weinstein, hit men, etc.).
Some people do suffer from depression and commit suicide. They may not show it, they can be all smiles in front of other people, but depression is a hell of a disease, and particularly taxing to the ones who are close to somebody who suffers from it. To claim that every celebrity suicide is basically a disguised murder is an insult to people who suffer from depression and the ones who try to help them.

Hey! i liked Solo and the last jedi is the best star wars film outside the original 3.

Yeah, more CDAN nonsense. Someone has taken the news that they're not going forward with all four spinoffs (They were never going to) and made up a story out of it.

Paul Saint John said...

As long as there are dragons, knights and nudity the audience will love it no matter what. They just need to find tbe right young British actors and some fine editors so that the plot makesa bit of sense.
