Blind Item #2

Back in the day, there was no one netter than this permanent A list stand up. He hasn't even done stand up in decades and he is still permanently A list. Now, he doesn't do much except live off old standup and movie fame. He doesn't write anything any longer which means if he does get a standup gig, they will all be jokes written for him.

Steve Martin has his band and he just had a Netflix special with Martin Short about a year ago. I would go with Eddie Murphy.

Eddie Murphy was my initial thought. Think it could be either Murphy or Martin, though, although Steve Martin used to have a bigger Twitter presence too.

Rosie riveter said...

I hope he comes back. He was at the very top for a reason

Michael said...

Eddie Murphy was my first thought too. Steve Martin is pretty well known for stage and music these days too.

Simon said...

He can get Jerry to write it for him. Seinfeld talking about him as his dream guest

Jimbonius said...

Eddie. Shame, because he was one funny dude.

Vita said...

I hope this is Eddie, and, just maybe, he could be putting pen to paper as we deal with this blind? He can tap that stellar funny bone! Think of all the material he hasnt done yet of being a father of ten! Surely, someone had some ice cream?😉

Eddie Murphy/Netflix deal

All of these comments with Eddie and Steve in same post, I cannot resist gleefully stating my love of Bowfinger! If you want a great, silly laugh about the love of filmmaking, a spoof of certain celeb-popular cultish places, and Eddie in a GREAT performance give it a watch!

Eddie Murphy. Steve Martin constantly tours with his band.

What would Eddie have to write about?
Life on the compound?
He’s become the real Kit Ramsey
from Bowffinger

Humor Me said...

I'm going with Bob Newhart.

Trapped said...

Eddie Murphy just read something on him regarding Netflix

B626 said...

What could Eddie write about?
Life on the compound?
Keeping kid's names straight?
Yes, he has virtually become
Kit Ramsey from Bowfinger(great movie!)
Eddie, prove me wrong.

Samantha the 1st said...

B626 I thought the in joke was that Eddie WAS Kit Ramsey.

Wasn't there a scandal that suddenly went away (and the accuser mysteriously 'jumped' off a building?)

Wasn't there a really bad sci fi movie EM made not long afterward?

Bonus dig at Ellen/Anne toward the end of Bowfinger.

Nonya Bidness said...

Eddie Murphy was great, but no one better??

Someone please tell enty about George Carlin and Richard Pryor.

Flashy Vic said...

I thought I was the only one who remembered Bowfinger.

An underrated gem of a movie.

I still use the phrase 'chubby rain'.

Nonya Bidness said...

Bowfinger is GOLD. I could watch that on a loop.

And I think the bad sci fi was Pluto Nash.

Angela said...

Bowfinger is great, the final gem so far in Steve Martin's career. Heather Graham's character, the one who sleeps her way to the top of production (naturally, she starts with the writer), is partially based on Anne Heche, whom Martin dated for a while. And, yes, Eddie Murphy is very endearing in a double part, because, for once, he doesn't play to the lowest common denominator and is part of an ensemble.
Most of Martin's fortune is used to buy Edward Hopper paintings. There was a Hopper exhibition in London (Modern Tate), and Martin had supplied something like one painting out of five.

Flashy Vic - every time heels click on concrete, anywhere, I think of that dog.

Any comedian from "back in the day" is gonna have to have someone else write their material because almost any topic or joke that used to be funny is now off-limits due to PC police.

I watched Eddie Murphy on a DVD that I got for $1 at christmas with my kids (teenagers) and they were shocked at how non-PC it was. Thought it was hilarious but they are able to see through the SJW BS...many of their friends would not be. Very, very few standup routines from prior to mid-2000s would be allowed today and if you don't continuously bash Trump, they probably won't even let you on stage.

Alf Landon said...

If SNL wanted to do Mr. Robinson's Neighborhood today (and they don't. They are all agenda, zero funny) they couldn't

longtimereader said...

If you were a child of the 80's then you destroyed your VHS copies of 'Delirious and 'Raw' from over playing.

Lyss16 said...

$20 mil for a Netflix special.....I just can’t.

Me :) said...

Hi, Eddie.

MountainMama said...

@MeliticusBee 100% agree. It would be so hard for them to be PC that it would suck the funny right out of them. That man used to make me cry I would be laughing so hard. Too bad we all got so uptight.

Alf - or "Kill My Landlord. K - I - L my land...lord."

MB - Eddie did a LOT of gay bashing in his standup back in the day. He got chided for it even then but didn't seem to care.

"And I think the bad sci fi was Pluto Nash."

Yes! Nonya I think you're correct.

HeatherBee said...

😂 😂- Thorne! You beat me to it. Give me half Eddieeeeee!! Give me half- Mr. FuckYou man!!!!

Jon said...

I believe Eddie could still do it. He was/is a comedic genius. So what if he doesn't write it on his own any longer...he's also a genius of timing and delivery and stage presence.

Flashy Vic said...

@Samantha.

When Steve Martin puts the elastic on the dogs hind legs to stop it showing off it's balls.😆 Especially because that's usually the first sight a visitor to my house will see from my lazy scrote of a dog.

Vita said...

😂😂😂😂😂😂

Samantha the 1st said...

I don't remember that part, Vic!

It's the scene where they put high heels on the dog, then let it wander around, to make someone think he's being followed.

Flashy Vic said...

I know, Sam, in the mutli storey car park. The bit I'm referring to is near the beginning when Heather Graham is about to call round.

Now I'm thinking about Heather Graham.....erm....I'm just off to the bathroom...

Kimberley said...

@Flashy - Did you know that Heather Graham was Adam Ant's girlfriend back in the day? Mmmmm, Adam Ant ... off to the bathroom myself, lol.

SlimKeith said...

Definitely the great Don Rickles.

Vita said...

Kimberely- whoa! Never knew Adam Ant (swoon) and Heather Graham were a couple! That would be one gorgeous pair. Adam Ant's greatest hits is a good time!
Unconnected tidbit...I think she also dated James Woods when they filmed Diggstown, i think.

Angela- Thanks for the info about Steve Martin and the Edward Hopper exhibition. I knew that he was an art lover, but didnt know Hopper was a fave that he collected. Cool!

Has anyone seen Martin Short's and his live show together? Has to be a great time!

Sunkist said...

Eddie was 19 when he started SNL. He was prob 20 when he wrote Delirious. Or younger. He was super silly in his youth but life is in session. He got unfunny and concentrated on characters.

TheBPlot said...

Writing a joke js one thing. Selling that joke on stage and actually dynamically weaving the web of jokes is also critical talent for a A list guy.

GentleBreeze said...

Don Rickles encouraged Eddie to do stand up, according to the DM.
SNL Mr. Robinson was a hoot. Eddie was smiling, then a knock at the door - snarling 'Who Dat?'. Then smarming out the window. Such an low-rent take on Mr. Rogers. Who btw I never took to because he was so respectful to his audience. I couldn't relate.

yes Vita!!! i am super excited. can't wait.

Whenever I'm in a parking garage and I hear clicking heels, I snicker because of "Bowfinger".

Really good comedies are special.

Carlin is king.

There is a documentary somewhere about Adam Ant. He fell hard for Heather. She nursed him through a breakdown and then they split. Sad for both I think.

Adam is a very sensitive person. I'm glad he is recording again and touring again. He seems to have mended.
