MySpace Mom Set Free

The mother who was convicted of three counts of illegally accessing a protected computer is going to be set free and have the case against her dismissed. A federal judge decided that despite the jury finding the mother guilty, the case should never have been brought. Lori Drew was the woman who had set up a fake MySpace account which eventually led to the suicide of a teenager who thought she had a boyfriend who dumped her. There was no boyfriend. It was the mom, her daughter and another teenager who were pretending to be the boyfriend.

The judge was concerned, and I agree, that if her conviction stood as is then everyone who violated the terms of service of any website could be convicted of a crime.

The judge in his questioning of prosecutors had asked, "Is a misdemeanor committed by the conduct which is done every single day by millions and millions of people? If these people do read [the terms of service] and still say they're 40 when they are 45, is that a misdemeanor?"

The judge felt that because of the way Drew was charged that anyone who violated terms of services agreements could also be charged. The jury had deadlocked on the felony charge of conspiracy which I think would have not been dismissed had she been convicted of that count.

The dismissal will not be official until next week.

Bring back stoning.

i can't even comment past that because the mom is such a DISGRACE to the human race.

Totally agree with Jax. The woman isn't even remorseful. I hope she rots in Hell.

That woman's actions directly led to a 13-year-old ending her life. How is that not a crime?

Couldn't they have found something that convicts her and sends her to jail?

What she did was just deplorable!

Hopefully there can be some justice in a civil action.
This woman must learn a lesson - as well as the kids she encouraged to torment this girl.
When will parents begin to act like adults again?? Enough with making the kids like you.
Disgusting.

Karma will be a huge bitch for this woman, anyway.

Probably already is.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!

here's to hoping she steps out of the denial that keeps her in her current state of non-culpability.

a kid is dead because of this bitch. if there's not a crime that fits what she did, then MAKE one.

Lori Drew may not be guilty of this charge but she is 100% guilty of being an evil, horrible person. And to imagine she herself is a Mother! I certainly hope your daughter doesn't commit suicide when she finds out her mother is an ASSHOLE, Lori.

She didn't even get a slap on the wrist. Where the F is justice when it's needed? How is this not the very definition of " wanton disregard for human life"?
She defines the word BITCH.

I agree, justice should be served. But they were chargin her with (as far as i understood it) hacking, or breaking in to a computer system. The 13-year old that died wasn´t even named a victim in the case! So convicting her on that would have been bad.

*charging

the judge is so fucking worried about setting a precedent, but what about the precedent of "aid in driving a young girl to suicide, you go to jail", where is that?

the internet is not going away, its time to start web laws and start charging and convicting people, otherwise this will never end. now every yahoo out there knows how far he can go and STILL not go to jail.

i agree. the stalking and harassment laws have a long way to go, let alone all the cyberstalking and cyberbullying.
can't this be manslaughter or something?

leeloodallas said...

and i'm with jax, bring back stoning

WBotW said...

She pretty much told the kid to kill herself! How is that not a crime?
Ah well, that's okay, I guarantee this bitch will be harassed and hopefully physically assaulted on a regular basis for the rest of her sad, sorry life.

jax, you're brilliant!

she really needed to be tried for some degree of manslaughter.
but a civil case may hit her more where it hurts. it will never bring the child back, though.
this really sucks!

I can't stand this - just terrible. TERRIBLE. People suck.

Don't get me started on this bitch ... She is basically going to get off scot-free. Hope she rots in hell.

Sick, sick, sick.

I guess I can maybe sorta understand the judge's point of view but this woman should be put away for the rest of her life for what she did. There's got to be another way to get her convicted.

Sick, sick, sick woman.

I feel so badly for the family that lost their daughter.

If there were another way, they would have tried that first. If they could've proved manslaughter, they wouldn't have bothered with hacking. You don't go around to the back door unless the front door is locked.

this story has boiled my blood since it first came out- a crime is still a crime regardless of the platform it occurs- internet, real life, telephone, mail. it doesn't f&#$@@% matter. what this "woman" did to that *child* was despicable & her reasoning behind it was even sadder. you can't terrorize anyone, let alone a child, push them to suicide and then get away with it because f a mentality "well if we prosecute one, we prosecute them all" EXACTLY. this crap happens all the time and people constantly get away with it. make it stop by education (prevention) & then prosecution.

/end rant.

Stupid bitch, gets zero jail time, disgusting pig avoids the clink, I hope she gets sued for every penny she has and more.

At least two people have mentioned they hope she rots in hell. Good news: I don't know if she's there yet but at the least she's got a timeshare. I remember reading about this before law enforcement got involved. The Drew's address and phone number showed up on a few websites and she had to shut down her business and move the family. That's probably only the start.

This judge also needs to be smacked down. If he felt the case shouldn't have been brought {I'm not a lawyer but it does look like the specific charges are hinky} he should have stopped it early on and certainly never let it go to jury. By voiding a guilty verdict, he took away the voice of the people. Not good.
