Does anyone actually choose an electric range over gas?

I have no choice we don't use gas in our town as far as I can tell, nobody I know has a gas range. They do use gas for grills

I've heard good things about gas but never having used it indoors, how would I know? I only know it's a good last ditch way to try and take out The Tall Man in Phantasm and even that didn't work out too well.

I don't know why you think everyone is given the choice. I have no gas service where I live.

Induction hobs are amazing. Always loved gas, never thought electric could equal it...but induction hob has won me over (God I'm boring).

Hell yes!!

I finally got the opportunity to switch over last summer!! Years of gas left my ceilings greasy and blackened, such a mess! I do miss the quickness of the flames, but not that soot!!

You bet--glass top electric range and I love it

@AlleyCat,the question is boring. Maybe change it to a food thread.

I live in a country where electric is the standard, and thnak god for that. Had to use a gas one during my exchange year in the UK and really thought it was really inconvenient and less easy to use

Gas all day. There's something primal about cooking with a flame.

Another one here-owned electric all my life. I don't like gas and I turned down the chance to include both in my kitchen when we built the house. Probably a stupid move as far as resell is concerned.

Do you even ever have a choice in an apartment building?

Gas 100%. We don't have natural gas here - we have gas tanks they come and fill.

I have one of each.

Prefer electric. Gas is better for cooking on the range but electric is better for the oven. Natural gas in general is just a whole list of potential headaches. Sure there all kinds of potential electrical problems too, but while you can have a house without natural gas, you'll always need electricity. Do love natural gas water heaters though, much better than electric.

Fear & Panic usually makes the choice.

Prefer gas, but hate when I need to light the burner by hand.
Alleycat-- i enjoy the separate Induction "burner" i have, as well

My Mom chose electric over gas. She loved her glass topped range- I hated it and always had gas stoves. Then, we moved to a place with no natural gas and we bought a smooth top range. Ended up loving it. Now, we live in a house with a kick ass Thermador gas range but I'm thinking about a glass top- go figure.

When I lived in an apartment, I had electric. (No choice.) But growing up in the Gulf Coast Region, only idiots get electric. When you a hurricane hits and the power is out, you can still cook. That is essential. Gas > Electric

I always grew up with electric. One of our houses we lived in before we bought our house, had gas. My husband swore I’d love it, but mostly it scared me. The knobs were on the front of the stove too, which is super dangerous if you have little kids. It didn’t seem to be so great that I just HAD to have it. Our house now is electric, but the heater is gas (electric AC/gas heat) which I DO prefer because it stays nice and warm here in our like, 2 months of “winter”. So, I guess I could get a gas stove if I wanted to, but we don’t have a gas line or anything, it’s a (small) tank and every winter we get halfway through winter and are like “Oh shit we are probably out of gas” and have to call and get the guy out here. Which to his credit he always comes no matter what time or day, but I can’t keep that level of awareness year round for a stove. Shit, neither of us can do it two months of the year.

Some places you can't have gas because they don't have an external exhaust for the carbon monoxide.

Wife prefers the glass top electric because it is so easy to clean.

Electric. Scared of my robe catching on fire like that GF of Soprano's who caught on fire.

I much prefer gas, but the apartment I'm in now has electric.

Hate electric stoves. Living where we do power goes out often enough that a gas stove is a godsend. You can always manually light the stove top or the oven and cook away. Plus everything just seems to cook more evenly, even stuff right out of the oven cooked at the same temperature and time comes out of a gas over just hotter, such as casseroles but I never had an issue with baked goods either.

I did; induction.

Well yeah. We don't have a gas line for a stove, and even if we did I wouldn't want to use it. I've used an electric stove my whole life. A lot of us have Enty!

New kitchen has both gas and induction hobs. Electric doesn’t get hot enough for some types of cooking. Induction is very good compared to old style electric hob elements. New ovens are electric, not gas. We still have the old AGA cooker with water jacket.

@Em,the surprise for me with the glass top electric range was that it did get extremely hot -as hot as the Thermador and it heats surprisingly quickly.

My in-laws have a 4 oven AGA gas range. It's a beautiful cobalt blue. In humid, hot south Louisiana, it's not the best choice though, lol.

My sister did. My mother had a Jenn Air stove for years soon as it broke she went back to gas

We have a 5 burner Wolf cooktop and an electric oven. The best of both worlds.

Chose induction when I renovated. Really pleased and surprised with the results. FYI--lots of restaurant kitchens in Europe use induction. Keeps the kitchen cooler, is nearly as responsive as gas. Peeps with pacemakers can't use them though.....

I have an induction cooktop. I love it!

Gas is not always a standard feature for new builds - folks will often run a line to the stove for resale, but stay with the standard electric appliance. Am using a glass cooktop (have always had gas), and am surprised how much I love it. Everything gets hot super fast, and cleaning up is a breeze.
