Today's Blind Items

Which up and coming Twilight actress lied about her background and said she lost her birth certificate so she would qualify for her part? She has told everyone she is adopted and Native/First Nations, but in reality has biological parents who raised her and is most definitely not Native/First Nations.

This has to be the girl who played Emily, one of the Native Americans. She was the girlfriend of one of the wolves.

Tinsel Korey
that would be who plays Emily and could pull off the appearance of being native American

Yes, Tinsel Korey. From her wikipedia:

However, doubts concerning her heritage surfaced as early as February 2008 [5]. It has since been alleged that neither "Tinsel" nor "Korey" are her real names. Evidence has suggested that Tinsel Korey's birth name is "Harsha Patel" and that Korey was raised a devout Hindu, daughter of a wealthy doctor who emigrated to Canada from India. After graduation from William Lyon Mackenzie Collegiate Institute in Downsview, Ontario, Patel assumed the name of Tinsel Korey and started falsely claiming First Nations heritage in order to get Native roles. [6].

Tinsel Korey(Emily). It's been said by many that she's actually East Indian.

Thanks to Share, Tinsel Korey.

A very weak BI today, because even Wikipedia states this:

"Doubts concerning her heritage surfaced as early as February 2008.

Korey claimed in 2009 that she was adopted as an infant and "grew up in a Jewish neighbourhood in Toronto" and that her biological parents were Anishnaabe. In 2005 she had said however, that she does not know which tribe her biological parents belonged to and that "people guess Ojibway".

In response to allegations that she does not have Native American heritage, Korey stated on her MySpace page that she will not release her birth certificate nor her date of birth nor her birth year or her place of birth, so as to render verification of her identity impossible. She stated that she is not an enrolled tribal member, does not have a Certificate of Indian Status and has no plans to get one.

Then, WTF? Many celebrities have told huge lies about their origins to look better or to get rid of their parents (Bob Dylan, for instance). More men would be interested by her birth certificate... to know whether she's legal.

There aren't that many female characters that require that particular heritage.

Julia Jones is on IMDB for Leah Clearwater, and Tinsel Corey is on IMDB (for Eclipse) for Emily (Sam's girlfriend with the scars). I didn't IMDB New Moon.

Are there any other main Native/First Nation female characters? It's been a while since I read the book, and I haven't seen New Moon yet (shock, horror, gasp)!

And I don't know either of these actresses, so no idea.

timebob said...

Well the producers were trying to be authentic in casting real native americans. Not Dot Heads.

here is an interesting imdb message board with a producer alleging he knows her and is bitching about her.

Kat said...

Apple, I'm sorry, 'dot heads'? What does that even mean?

kimmypie1 said...

Is Native/First Nations the PC way to say Native Americans now? Or is Native/First Nations something else?

.robert said...

Kat, devout Hindus.

Jungle007 said...

Wow, I would call you a troll Apple, but... judging by your avatar, I'd guess that you already know that.

.robert said...

kimmypie1, it is Canadian and a big clue.

Sporky said...

kimmypie1 - I believe First Nation is the Canadian term for Native American.

However, "dot heads" is NOT a PC way to say East Indian. Please.

Moosefan said...

I'm a member of the Suquamish. There are a number of First Nation-what they call in Canada-actors and actresses and other American Natives from all of the tribes that have worked on many movies and television series.
I am sure that First Nation would be more than happy to welcome her if she wanted it.
As for the "dot head", unless your name is Pocahontas, you too are an imigrant. Get a clue.

Genesis said...

Im not for one being PC at all but fuck me, dotheads? Thats pretty fucked up.

RocketQueen said...

And....we have a new troll.

Cheryl said...

Wiki settles it then.

frankie. said...

yep, i'm pretty sure 'dotheads' is full on racist, can you get anymore offensive? asshole.

timebob said...

oh you bunch relax and untie your panties. I was just joking. I guess it is ok for a hindu to hijack a whole race for her own selfish purpose. And that is morally ok to you people.

Wow.

RocketQueen said...

No, Apple, it's not okay. She's a troll, too.

.robert said...

Oh, I meant to ask, how hard is it to get a birth certificate in Canada? I can get a new one online in a week, probably in a day if I drove to Miami. What is weird is my place of birth is listed as Dade County instead of a hospital like all of my siblings.

Judi said...

Your intention is irrelevant. It's offensive.

HockeyMum said...

Dothead is mild compared to "push starts and pull starts" which I've heard more often. Disgusting (funny, but disgusting)

childeroland said...

If the blind is about Tinsel Korey, this 'producer' posting on IMDB doesn't seem very reputable and it sounds like he's the one spearheading some sort of campaign against her.

Anyone can be slandered -- where's this guys proof, other than "she looks East Indian," whatever the hell that means.

HockeyMum, you lost me there.

HockeyMum said...

robert, I hate to explain it, but in our heavily East Indian neighbourhood, some of the women and men have a religious symbol of a red dot on their forehead, while others of the Sikh faith wear turbans.... get it? Anyhoo, checked out photos of Tinsel whatever and she looks more East Indian than First Nations, which is our PC term for Native Canadians.

HockeyMum said...

Oh, and to make it even more confusing, East Indians are supposed to be referred to as South Asians now, to be politically correct. West Indians are from the tropical islands.... whew, hard to keep track. That's why we try to get them all to call themselves Canadians! So it looks like Tinsel is Canadian, from parents of South Asian origin.

Sheesh. Dot head is only as offensive as you wanna take it. People need to chill. Why do girls have the dots on their foreheads? so on their wedding night their hubby can scratch it off and see if they get a convenience store or a motel :0 just kidding.....sheeesh. PC ness gone amok. No one is saying anything mean about people. Just stereotypes, which are all based on truths anyway.

Sinjin said...

Booooo Hiss @ "dot heads". Many forget...we're ALL immigrants.

Five bucks says "torrey" and "Apple" are the same person.

libby said...

A few people seem to think it's no big deal to fake the First Nations thing, but I disagree. That status is important to F.N. actors and producers because putting Caucasian actors in 'red-face' was such a tacky and regrettably big part of many, many films.
Didn't Elvis play Native American once? See, that's the kind of thing most everyone wants to avoid and (hopefully) FORGET.

I've noticed Canada is very supportive of its Native Americans. I think it's nice.

GladysKravitz said...

Thank you to everyone for pointing out the racism inherent in that term.

Kinda makes me sick. I love the readers on CDaN. Let's keep the schoolyard free of insults and jeers, ok?

Unknown said...

Sadly Canadians are not supportive to our First Nation people. My brother-in-law is First Nations adopted into an English-Canadian family. They all dealt with racist attitudes, comments and actions. Even today my brother-in-law gets better treatment when he's with one of us non First Nation family members.
Racism is alive and well in our country.

oops.

This is irrevant and not racist but has anyone else accidentally said Canad-I-a in a sentence?

Also, if I ever heard anyone call anyone else a fucking DOT HEAD I'd slap them in the face. Just saying.

Wowerz.
Leave it to cdaners topick apart and ruin the racist commenters. I loves it!
As a punjabi dude I say kudos. Racism is a frivolous exercise. Speaking of which, I have a friend who is from a tribe here in northern California. She carries a federal Id card identifying her as a native American. Calls it her " flair of shame". She's required by federal law to carry it all times. She also said that all natives in the US are required to carry one. So the blind is def teffering to someone from
Canada. Btw, TKO and I saw New Moon. Besides laughing the whole time, I thought Tinsey was the hottest girl on the movie. And she definately does not have gujurati features, if she is indeed this Patel girl. I should know, I almost married one!

as someone who lives in a very large indo canadian community...i can tell you 'dot head' is not cool. get a fucking clue. neither is push start/pull start.

and even though it's accurate, ignorant fucking racist twat is probably not nice either.

Yeah, I'm East Indian, and "dotheads" is pretty effin' racist.

I hope you're merely a troll, Apple, and not just another racist cunt -- because the world definitely needs less of them.

Shame on you.

Murphy Brown 2020 said...

P.S. You're an asshole too, Torrey.

More proof that ENT is Canadian/lives in Canada: no one in the US says "First Nations."

Char said...

Well, Canadians are not perfect in their relations with their First Nations people, but let me tell you... I lived in Canada for the first 26 years of my life and I now life in Australia. Canada is LIGHT YEARS ahead of Australia in the treatment of their native people. Yes there is racism there, and that's not okay, but they're doing a hell of a lot better than many many other parts of the world at this point.

Anyway, pretty obvious blind today considering there are only 2 female native parts in the Twighlight series, and the info is on wikipedia already. Oh well, have to get a soft ball every once in awhile.

FYI - not all Native Americans have a CDIB card, only those who are enrolled in a federally recognized tribe AND have a certain degree of Indian blood. Plenty of Native Americans do not have a card and no one "requires" those who have one to carry it at all times. Now if they want to carry it and use it as ID or to prove their Native status for treaty rights (i.e. spear fishing, collecting medicines, etc.), fine, but they are NOT required to carry it.

Murphy Brown 2020 said...

Char, I spent a few months in Australia and fell in TOTAL love with the continent, but I agree with you in that Aborigines are treated deplorably over there.

@ 'a' ~ I think enty only refered to her as a Native First Nation because she is Canadian and thats how they refer to their Native people there. This is a clue, not that we needed that, this was like shooting fish in a barrel> thanks enty!

Leah said...

My mother in law is 1/2 Native American, my husband is 1/4, and my children are 1/8 and no one carries an ID card saying so. We don't live on Tribal Lands, and we don't receive any casino or Federal money. The only nod we give it, is when we fill out forms that ask about nationality.
PS, only in the great American melting pot can my children's heritage be equal parts Cherokee and Scicilian!

Katja said...

@moosefan -are you in Kitsap?

@a -I hear this term often, it just depends on who you are around.

@Apple and that other one. Go back under your bridge with your disgusting comments.

What I find offensive is that we have many talented and beautiful First Nations actresses who were not cast in the film - rather we have a wannabeforwork in the roll
First Nations is not PC it's what we are..First Nations, First peoples of north and south america. I am Anishinnabe and yes Canada is racist and living conditions on our reserve system is in deplorable conditions, suicides, gang warfare, alcoholism, drugs, family dysfunctions, sexual, emotional abuse. We have 500 missing or unsolved murders of First Nations/Aboriginal women in Canada and the government finally announced a task force to investigate. You would think the average person would have assumed something tragic has happened..but our Mini Bush just smiles and waves. I once lived in California for six months and it was wonderful.

Alex said...

This one's simple. There were no other Native American females in the movie.

moi said...

I don't know how Canadians can claim that First Nations people are treated well, not when every single First Nation hockey player in the NHL talks about having to overcome racism playing junior hockey--fans of opposing teams yelling racial slurs, people on their own team not accepting them, being told they'll never amount to anything other than an alcoholic, etc.

And then we have the stories about the First Nation groups who asked the government to send medical supplies to treat swine flu and were sent shipments of body bags instead.

Canada doesn't really have any right to look down on Australia when talking about treatment of native peoples.
