@Jerkula- it’s my understanding that it provides a barrier between the foil and the crack rock so it doesn’t scorch or melt too quickly.

I can say cannibis enthusiasts I know get their fingers dirty from handling the resin of cleaning/maintaining a pipe bowl. Weed leaves a sticky brown resin which is hard to clean off and then black soot can get stuck to it, leaving one with dirty fingers.
That's the weed answer, I don't have experience with crack smoking but could see where it could be similar.
We also use soap..so tell your stoner friends to wash their damn hands ..

Your fingers can get black when smoking meth, when the lighter hits the glass bowl to heat it up. You have to constantly wipe it clean with towel after each hit. Glad those days are over!
A meth addiction seems like a lot of hard work.
