Elizabeth Edwards Was Volcanic When She Found Out About The Baby
I have been kind of watching the coverage of the John Edwards trial. I don't even care about the results of the trial as much as I enjoy seeing him publicly humiliated for cheating on his dying wife. I enjoy the karma retribution. Yesterday some guy who testified said he was in the room when Elizabeth Edwards found out about the baby and Rielle Hunter. He is the second person to say he was present. My big question and maybe someone saw the answer somewhere is why John Edwards did not choose to tell all of this to his wife somewhere private where they could talk it out a little first. Apparently Elizabeth was upset that she was going to be humiliated. I can see that. She was also really worried about her kids who were going to have to deal with all of this. The aide said she could get upset about things but this was at a whole new level.

OMG, this poor woman went through hell. John Edward's has no compassion, no heart, he's just a spoiled self absorbed prick.
John Edwards is the douchiest douche whoever douched. I attempted to read the book written by the guy who Edwards wanted to pass off as Rielle's baby daddy. But the actions of all involved were so vile, I just could not finish it.
I know word on the street was that Elizabeth Edwards was not the sweetest gal on the block, but could you imagine how you would handle this if this were happening to you? OMG. I would just lose it. I would never be able to trust anyone again.
I've read several articles about what a holy terror Elizabeth Edwards could be. That being said, I can't blame her at all for being volcanic about this. Public humiliation like this must have been horrible. I'm sure that she had willingly turned a blind eye to John's wandering ways as many political wives do, but I'm sure that she expected a certain level of discretion. And certainly a very high level of birth control!
I know that when I was married to my ex, I wasn't the sweetest gal on the block. Unhappiness can do that to you. Being married to an ahole and really turn you into a B****.
It's sad that she probably got cancer because of all the hormone shots she went through to get pregnant again after her son died. There's a special place in hell for him and his wandering dong.
You'd think for a politician he'd be able to do a better job of cheating and keeping it quiet.

I remember the first time I ever saw him, I commented to someone that Edwards reminded me of Jimmy Swaggart. Turns out I was right in more ways than one.

Did Elizabeth Edwards hear about this from others, or from John? Not that it makes it any more tolerable, but if she heard about it from others, who can be surprised by her reaction?
IMHO, first and foremost, Elizabeth was a true Southern Lady in the mold of Scarlett O'Hara and Melanie Wilkes (although I do believe far more Scarlett than Melanie).
She stood by her man despite the fact that he was (and still is) utter scum.
John probably chose to tell her in front of witnesses hoping to avoid castration (because you just know if she'd had something sharp or even not-so sharp handy, she'd have done it but being a lady, not in front of company) and instead just have her yell without getting physical.
Why did she tolerate it? Because she was 1)a political wife and 2)of the Kennedy generation - if you don't have it thrown in your face, you turn a blind eye to it. (See Jackie)
Good point @lyz--being unhappy can make a person unpleasant, especially marital unhappiness.
I honestly wish his daughter would turn on him, but there she is supporting him at his trial. Tho maybe she's doing it for the sake of her little brother and sister.
One of the many classy things Elizabeth Edwards did was bring gifts to John and Rielle's daughter, saying that it wasn't the child's fault. Very cool.
It was my understanding that the Edwards had not been together since 2004-ish and that, yes, she was a bitch on wheels. I believe the only reason they stayed together was to make another run at the White House
They both wanted it. If it wasn't for that they may have actually divorced. I think John had the affair easily because he and Elizabeth weren't intimate partners anymore AND because he felt entitled, like the presidency was his due. He ignored that he and his wife were still moving forward, together, to win an election. His lying amd sneaking around ruined the perfect couple image. I think that, more than anything else, is what pisses her off the most. She felt entitled too. She tried to do damage control on "Oprah" and came out looking like a crazed, delusional ass. John didn't even live with her anymore, but she was still trying to save the perfect couple brand.
I think she was an asshole and I think he is an asshole. I don't see either one of them as "the villain" or "the victim." Both of them carry various kinds and degrees of blame, in my opinion. Bottom line, only one around now who really knows is John.

I read the book by Andrew Young a few years ago, but I had heard long before that she could be a real pain in the ass. Her death has sort of canonized her beyond what she deserves.
Having said that, NO woman deserves what he put her through. And to do it when she had stage 4 cancer makes it twice as heinous. I know all politicians are hypocrites (Dem and Rep.)but he seems to be one of the worst. I've said it before, the country really dodged a bullet by this coming out before he could get nominated, or be put on the president's cabinet or (dear Lord) get a Supreme Court seat - his goal with Obama. Can't tell you how much I hate the POS.
My brother and his wife live in NC and are yellow dog democrats. But even before this story broke, they both told me they'd NEVER vote for this bastard. They weren't able to put into words why they wouldn't - I think they just sensed how bad he really is.
He did not choose to tell her privately because he is weak and cowardly.

I agree with all above postings yet want to point out she kept the secret and kept campaigning. That was pretty dishonest on her part and could have been a disaster for the country if he had won.
She had a lot of heartache in her life and it was much too short and that is a tragedy.
I have to wonder if the amount of stress and emotion put on her made her cancer advance faster than it would have if she had a good husband. There is no way she could have not been affected physically by all she went through. It's all so sad even if she was a bitch.

I've heard that fertility drugs can cause or can increase your chance of getting cancer. There have been a few studies done that support this theory. I'm not saying it's 100% true, but it would make sense.
Anyone remember Liz and John on Oprah a few years ago? They were playing Healing Family so Liz can sell some books and come out smelling like rose. Umcomfortable was not the word.
I think that john made a real mistake going to trial and that he is going to lose big time. yesterday the judge didn't allow their most important witness to testify because they hadn't told anyone that he was going to testify.
he is so arrogant thinking that he would win this case, I just don't see that he will. and making his parents and his daughter sit through it every day with all the horrible stuff that has come out about him and how badly elizabeth suffered.

I just remember when he did that interview and was told that he did this to his wife while she had cancer. With a straight face he said that she was in remission. I have never felt such rage surge through me. I have heard many times in news reports that Elizabeth's cancer was a result of the fertility drugs. And she took them to 'replace' their only son, who died in a car accident (I think). She was in her 40's, and the next kid she had was a girl, so she had to undergo the treatments again to get a boy finally.
That's the thing that creeps me out the most. If John had a grief-reaction to 'replace' a child he loved, that's one thing. But men who MUST have sons, and who would put their grieving, Peri-menopausal wives through rough fertility treatments, are douchebags.
auntliddy--She WAS actively running for First Lady, though, and that's one of the most powerful positions in the country, that can be attained in a back-door kind of way (Doesn't have to be elected, not under as much intimate scrutiny).
Imagine a woman with dreams of Eleanor Roosevelt. Everyone would listen to you, the rest of your life. One of Hillary's most prized possessions is the photo her meeting Eleanor Roosevelt---You get the idea.
I think what's really sad about this is that John Edwards was actually speaking out about poverty, and getting some attention on an incredibly important but overlooked issue. If he was shitty in his private life, then that's terrible, but the real loss for most of us is what he could have done in his public life. I saw him speak on poverty in Seattle one time, and it was very moving. In a world where we all focus on the damn Kardashians and Hiltons, here was someone actually speaking up for the poor and getting some attention for it. So sad that he fell from grace and let down all the people he could have helped.

This is just in general, but:
If guys put the effort into their marriages that they do into their affairs, their wives would be less "distant" and "cold." Guys get their mistresses flowers and candlelight dinners, and the mistresses don't have to pick up their dirty socks and underwear. Of course they are never "cold" like their wives are.
