Lindsay Lohan's Stage Debut

Because last night's performance was a preview performance, no press actually wrote a review about Lindsay Lohan's debut in Speed The Plow. The only reviews are Twitter reviews and they were mixed. I don't think anyone expected anything different. Obviously if you pare actually paying money and buying flowers to give to Lindsay after the show, what do you think that person is going to say about her performance? The reviews on Twitter ranged from car crash to superb. Here is the thing that bothered me most about Lindsay's performance from reading the reviews.

Earlier this year I wrote about how this is a perfect part for someone with limited acting ability because they can read many of the few lines they have  from a book they carry. Lindsay took full advantage of that, but so did Madonna and many other celebrities that have taken the role. When you do that, you have very few lines left. Lindsay didn't know most of those remaining lines and had to be fed them from the side of the stage. How can you not learn your lines after weeks of rehearsals and supposed studying? If the two male leads had done that they probably would be replaced by an understudy who does know the lines and is hoping for a chance. Maybe by the time the show actually opens she will memorize them, but you would think knowing how closely scrutinized her performance would be that she would at least try to remember her lines. It also wouldn't have hurt to not read the other lines from a book because then you are not ever looking at the audience.

Circling the bottom of the drain is what's left of her career.

Long term drug and alcohol abuse lead to a soggy brain. She can't retain information.

Apparently she went drinking immediately after the show! That's our Lilo....

My crackhead cousin in Texas wants her drugs!

Why drag Madonna into this? She did a fine job in the role, and I have no doubt she was completely capable of memorizing her dialog.

Her understudy must be salivating. I bet she has the entire script memorized.

Topper-yeah you can say alot about madonna, but she's a professional- shows up on time and knows what shes supp to know.

Not to defend her but how does Enty know she was fed lines from the side of the stage? No proof of that. And unless you have an earpiece then it can't be done during the live show.

Critics are sometimes allowed in previews, sometimes not.

And being an understudy sucks. You never get to actually run the show to hit your marks or lines or anything. Applause to all who have had to go one as an understudy. Truly it's hard as hell! I was one once but had to leave due to a film role. Thank goodness!!!!

Sherry, I was thinking the exact same thing! No way a tweeting audience member would hear lines being fed from off-stage unless they were full-on yelling the lines.

E said the same thing about Lilo when she went on 2 Broke Girls, and both stars of the show said he was full of crap.

Enty, big fan. I was at the show last night. When I have better internet access, I can provide details. But everything you've heard is pretty much true.

I was at the show as well. Her acting was bad. I had a hard time following Act 2 due to her performance.

Lindsay thought being in a play is like being on SNL.

She thought there would be cue cards for the additional dialogue. :-P

I was there, they were full-on yelling them.

More details... I was sitting in the Dress Circle. I didn't even know the play was starting until I had arrived in London Monday afternoon. I was surprised I was able to get a ticket, but the theatre was only about 3/4 full from my perspective. (The three seats to my left were empty.)

It was a preview though, so it wasn't expected to be perfect. I thought Nigel Lindsey had actually asked for a line in the first five minutes; that's when you heard the script reader.

I wanted Lindsay to be good. I think she's actually a good actress and can turn her career around. She was fine in the first act. But her character Karen (who doesn't have a last name, but the men do) has A LOT of dialogue at the beginning of the second act. And it's Mamet so it's tough. She started fine, but then imploded. She would pause, and then she'd be given a line out loud from the left side of the stage. Loud enough to hear in the Dress Circle. And it happened again, and again and again... although the last time, I think the reader jumped the gun and gave the line before Lindsay needed it.

To be continued...

Like someone mentioned earlier, I think the drugs have taken their toll. She seems incapable of learning lines. And she's what......27?......that's scary.

apparently her costars ALSO forgot their lines! sounds like she actually did okay.

Wow..I have never heard of a preview having someone being fed their lines. Dress rehearsal maybe but I would think you would know them by then.

You have the book in plenty of time to come to the rehearsals with the lines down more or less. They do blocking and by a certain time you are "off book"..Then you sit around and just run lines over and over until it becomes rote. THEN you add your color so to speak. Wow, I've worked better community theatre.

msgirl said...

Agree with Sherry, by the preview everyone should know their lines. You can't really act unless you know your lines otherwise it doesn't come from the heart, si ti speak.

Dave M. said...

After reading the Vulture article, I realize Richard Schiff called for the line, but I thought it was Nigel.

There is a book used as a prop that all the characters read from from time to time. But in the second act, I think there was a copy of the book (play, not prop) on the couch that was supposed to be out of audience view, but I saw it. I think Lindsay picked it up a couple times.

I think Lindsay was actually pretty good, aside from not having all the lines down by heart.

Dave M. said...

To clarify my bad writing, in the second act, there were two books on the couch: the prop you were supposed to see, and the copy of the play you weren't.

Thanks @Dave and @fake name!!

I actually hope (I know, I know) that this marks a turn around for Lindsay

Maybe the next few shows she'll have it down

LiBlo hasn't cared about a career since Herbie. That's the first movie she was threatened with replacement, she's 30 now, so I have zero pity for anyone who hires her knowing she's a flake, thief, liar, drunk, drug user that no one cares about. With so much real talent out there, why are people bothering with her?

Dave M. said...

I'm still rooting for her, and I hope this marks her turning point. Don't forget, she's actually a very talented and charming actress, who just lost her way. I thought she looked very attractive last night. (Which is even more amazing considering what she's put her body through.)

But one other point: she delivers a critical line in the third act, and she rushed it such that I didn't catch it. Someone else in my row missed it too. Thankfully she asked her date what Lindsay said, and the date said the line loud enough for me to hear.

FlirtyChick74 said...

Thanks Dave! I too think she's capable of a comeback. At least she's making an effort to turn things around. It's never easy (or perfect) but she can do it. So no hate here.

This thing had train wreck written all over it from the beginning. Lohan acting live on stage?? Come on!! The producers took a chance and now it will only last as long as people want to pay to see the train wreck. Probably not long. For her sake I hope there are some yachts on the river Thames.

Katie said...

Why does she keep getting chances? She obviously thinks partying is more important than her career. She probably makes more money with her wiles in the Middle East.
