No. My area is almost completely shut down on Christmas not on Easter.
I like to think it's somewhere between Christmas and Halloween.
Easter is almost non-existent. just a bunch of chocolate in the shops but no one really does anything

It absolutely is here in the DC area. Easter baskets aren't just a cream egg and some jelly beans anymore. Parents here are getting their kids a ton of presents and I'm not talking about a trinket from the dollar store.

I like to spoil my kids with treats and a few small outdoor activities (bubbles, chalk, etc) but no huge gifts.
I always bring Spring flowers to my aunts, grandmothers and close friends because I enjoy the symbolism.
Also, I bake my ass off and bring dessert wherever we celebrate. This year is a mini egg chocolate cheesecake and egg shaped sugar cookies I iced in Spring colours.
I do it because it’s my favourite time of year but I don’t feel as obligated as I do at Christmas.
At Easter everything is shut down. Years past we hiked because we didn't have kids and the weather is beautiful. No candy or gifts purchased so no it doesn't resemble Christmas at least at our house.
Easter here is probably the biggest day for restaurants that are open in the morning. they are slammed (well Easter and Mother's Day).
my son went crazy for his girlfriend's kids. it was little stuff from the Dollar Store but still, i thought it was a bit much. when you spend $75 at the Dollar Store on 4 kids - that's a lot of stuff.

I used to coach youth lacrosse. The team made no progress because most of the boys were playing 3 sports at once. The parents competing with each other who has the biggest wallet. Or line of credit. The kids were miserable.
This year, the bunny 🐇is leaving a nice, hardcover book, $20, and a small basket of good chocolates.
I'm curious where you guys are from who say everything is shut down. What states do you live in (if American)? I went to the market yesterday and they have a sign up that says they will be open normal hours on Easter. Everything is open here.
One celebrates Jesus's birthday, and one celebrates Zombie Jesus's birthday. So, they're similar to me.
I don't think it's quite as commercialized as Christmas or even Halloween. I've always loved Easter traditions and celebrations, but it's never anything too crazy, and no expensive gifts for kids. Also, no gifts for adults. Just joyful, all the hope and renewal of spring.

No, it's not big where I live. Everything is open. Very different from when I was a kid.

Yes, my husband's side of the family makes a big deal out of it. tons of presents for the kids. Big meal. Several days of prep. Really annoying.

I do not like it when religious holy days and holidays are turned into commercial cash grabs. The holy day and the holidays lose their meaning.
Some of us call refer to Easter as Resurrection Day because the pagans celebrated Easter before Jesus walked the earth.
I do not get offended when people say Easter instead because not everyone knows this.
Weird, I've always thought that Easter is taken much less seriously now than it was when I was a kid.
I live in a still very religious country,so almost everything is closed, except supermarkets and movie theathers. Easter bunny and colored eggs are unusual here.
Almost everything is open Easter. But a lot of food. Halloween is the holiday for the non religious now. Easter is more important in church today I think, because it isn't as commercial. I hope it becomes less commercial as time goes on.
I think some of the media here in the U.K is trying to ramp up the hype to Christmas levels. The stores (apart from maybe convenience stores) are closed tomorrow (Good Friday) open Saturday and closed again on Monday.
We have the usual chocolate Easter eggs and bunnies, Easter bonnets, coloured eggs, Spring flowers etc. Plus the supermarkets advertising spring lamb for Sunday lunch. I've noticed the promoting of Easter door wreaths, decorations etc. I really hope it doesn't get any more commercialised; like last year they were pushing gift boxes for Christmas Eve. Plus there are the same old furniture sales advertised on TV like Christmas for the public holidays. It's just bearable at the moment.

I just had to stop myself when I was out buying candy/treats for Easter baskets because I started to buy little gifts too. Then I realized--this isn't Christmas or a birthday! I don't need to get actual meaningful gifts!!
Tell Me Lies-- it's a slippery slope! They trap you in the aisles with all the pastel colors and cute bunnies and bubbles, and you're doomed. Stay strong!
I confess that there were times I would get my kids new bikes, boogie boards etc. for Easter. Their older items would just be beat to shit. When they were little, I would take them to church on holy days of obligation and, therefore, they would get new outfits to wear to church. We also did brunch at a good, local restaurant. As they got older, I would make a family basket of goodies and they were not obligated to go to church. They could make their own decisions about what to believe.
I quite like Easter despite not being religious.
I appreciate the days off and every fucker not trying to crowbar my cash out of my pockets like at Christmas, a holiday I loathe, precisely for that reason
. I wish Christmas was as religiously focused as Easter is. I just want a few days off work without going bankrupt. Is that really too much to ask?
I don't know whether other people are going more crazy. We've always been OTT with presents for every occasion. It's actually less so now because the kids are older. They just want cash and chocolate, the same as we all do.
It is for me because I'm a bakery manager in florida.
No that I’ve noticed. The Easter Bunny leaves a chocolate egg for everyone in the household Easter Sunday then the kids search for a few more eggs in the garden. When I was a child the chickens laid our Easter eggs because my mum gave them a wee bit of grated chocolate the previous night, and in the morning foil wrapped small chocolate eggs would be in the nesting boxes. We have the same traditions that have been going on for generations; the children get a new egg cup or mug with a painted egg for breakfast. Even though we aren’t religious, we don’t eat meat on Good Friday, but make it up with Hot Cross Buns, Simnel Cake and Roast Lamb over the Easter period. We get both Good Friday and Easter Monday off as public/bank holidays.
When my son was little I would fill his Easter basket with cute little toys because he didn't need the candy and he got THREE other baskets from Grandparents and an Aunt! Now my boy has grown up and he has two little girls and they rarely get any sugar at all. However the family tradition of THREE Easter baskets continue....what to do??? I try to go for a theme every year. This year it is Beach Day theme. They are both getting Beautiful beach bags stuffed with a matching giant monogrammed towel. Monogrammed beach mugs that also matches their bags and their towels. Each of them are getting ballerina bathing suits and then the rest is stuffed bunnies, toys, books etc.
I started buying this after Christmas.
Minneapolis is completely shut down for Easter, even Target.
Forget about doing anything at all.
And, the town is run over with alternative types who don't care about religion.
Give me Mexico anytime. They know how to party, instead of fake religion.

I am having a very unusual Easter this year. I attended 8 years of Catholic school and we went to mass on Holy Thursday, Good Friday, & Easter Sunday. We each got an Easter basket, we colored eggs, sometimes got a new dress, etc., but nothing overwhelming. Actually, the highlight was that my dad knew someone that made homemade horseradish. It was almost like a family competition...who could eat the most and we’d all have tears streaming down our faces.
This year, I am going to a Mormon Baptism for my friend’s son. This is all new for me! In the Mormon religion, you get baptized at 8, the reason being that you ‘choose’ to be baptized. So I was researching things online, such as what to bring for a gift (apparently gifts are not expected so I just bought him a nice birthday present instead). I’ve never been to their church, have no idea what to expect, how long it will be, etc. I figured I’d wear a dress but don’t know if certain colors are not okay (like black). Literally totally over-thinking it, so if anyone has advice please LMK. But basically I’ve decided this, eat and pee before I go ‘cause who knows how long we might be there. Meanwhile, my friend is the chilliest person on the planet and never judges me on anything; if she knew that I was stressing out, she’d be mortified! But it’s a huge deal for them—family members flying in, etc., so I’d prefer to know a little bit about it.

@Enty: I live in NY and the percentage of people celebrating Easter is quite small. Nothing is closed.
I did purchase 2 Easter gifts this year, both @ Target. I have 2 family members who love to decorate for the holidays and both are going through a difficult time. Target has these adorable (yet elegant) throw pillows that are Easter-themed. Quite sweet.
Finally, I wish that I knew how to add links on my I-phone, but I do not. But my favorite message for this Easter, this Spring, and this season of new beginnings is one of the first pictures of Notre Dame taken after the fire. You can see the chaos and it’s really smoky but the golden cross manages to shine through like a beacon of light. For me, that’s a message of hope, which the whole world needs right now.
