Blind Item #4 - Reader Blind Item

In the mid 1970’s, there was a public altercation between two men witnessed by a number of people.
One of the men was a Hollywood mogul all of you know.

The other was a singer/songwriter whose greatest success came as part of a band in the 1960’s who were one of the biggest American groups of the day.  His solo career was not commercially successful although it was critically acclaimed and his music is well thought of by other musicians.  He has had a career resurgence of sorts since his death particularly among indie rockers and there has been a documentary as well as several books about him. Part of the problem was mismanagement and incompetent marketing of his music and career and part of the problem was the singer/songwriter’s drug problems.

The altercation was supposedly about his latest album and problems with its release and being over budget as the mogul ran the label the singer/songwriter recorded for.  In retrospect, many consider this record the singer/songwriter’s finest achievement and a masterpiece.  This is only partly true.  The singer/songwriter was also angry about the mogul’s interest in his young son asking him if he would be interested in child acting etc.  The singer/songwriter had heard the stories which existed even then and he ended up both yelling at and slapping around the mogul.  He changed labels right after that.

The box tops weren’t one of the biggest American groups of the day and Big Star weren’t the mid sixties.

That was my first thought! Was his dad in a band?

I’ve never heard of him having a son though.

Album was "No Other" released in 1974. A major commercial flop, Asylum refused to even promote the record.

It has been re-released recently to much critical acclaimed.

Glenn Frey and the Eagles.

Geffen managed the Eagles when he was first starting out.

There was a big documentary on the eagles and frey a few years ago

It's Gene Clark of the Byrds. He signed to Asylum (Geffen) in the 70's. His solo career never took off, but Bob Dylan called his song "For a Spanish Guitar" one of the best songs ever written.

He jumped ship to RSO after a little while at Asylum.

Gene clark and geffen. Former Byrds songwriter is now considered the godfather of 'Americana' alongside gram parsons. Get his excellent album 'no quarter' which pisses all over the entire eagles back catalogue.

Sorry 'no other' is the title.

Gene Clark and David Geffen. The album was the magnificent No Other and Gene though this was his ticket back to commercial success.

Niel Young from CSN&Y, Geffen, and one of Niel's sons.

Gene Clark had two sons and was divorced from their mother when he died in 1991. (NY Times obituary)
