Today's Blind Items - Used To Be A Star - Reader Blind

A friend of mine along with his best friend worked as extras on the set of the movie _________________. Here's what he had to say when I asked him if he got to meet this former A- list dual threat actress turned B- lister.

She got me blacklisted by one of the VERY few casting people here!!!!

We were on the set as extras. I also drove the Chrysler in the establishing bar scene. The guy who gets out, walks around, gets his date, and goes up the stairs? That's me. Anyhow, we were inside the bar. He was thrilled to be in there with the actress. I'd never heard of her. She was concentrating, staying in character, because on ACTION, she was supposed to run out of the bar, upset about something. Well, during the wait, my friend said "Hey, I liked the work you did on ______________. How'd you do that?" She looked up at him VERY SLOWLY, and said nastily "You're talking to me about _____________, RIGHT NOW!??"

Man, I'm glad I wasn't my friend. She was giving him one heck of an "eat shit" look, My friend said "I'm sorry", she replied, very slowly, "In ____________, we sat in a studio, and they recorded our voices." Then she looked back down, concentrating on getting back into character. next thing you know, I don't hear from the casting agent any more. My agent says it's because I BOTHERED THE TALENT. Oh, I was pissed. Apparently what happened was that she complained that "the guy with the beard" had disturbed her inside the bar set.  I have a full beard, my friend who did the bothering has a little goatee. Dammit, I've never even HEARD of her!!!!!

I never would've known she was anyone, except that my friend said she was on some goddamn cartoon. The only thing I noted was that her hair coloring was horrible, no highlights whatsoever looks like someone dipped her head in a bucket of India ink.

Marisa Tomei?

Tricia13 said...

Not sure she was on a cartoon though....?

Amartel said...

Yeah, this is not really invoking a lot of sympathy. Don't bother the feckng talent. Not a difficult request.

sandybrook said...

Winona Ryder?

MontanaMarriott said...

Rose McGowan? She also does animation voice overs.

sandybrook said...

Most talent doesn't want to be bothered with small talk on set.

Moose said...

Julie Kavner

Tricia13 said...

She did an Episode of the Simpsons that was memorable but sounds like more of an ongoing gig.

MontanaMarriott said...

So based on the "India Ink" comment she's a raven haired brunette?

Tricia13 said...

I think it may be Laura San Giacomo-Pretty Woman has that scene in the beginning I think

MDAnderson said...

Mila Kunis??

Alf Landon said...

India Ink usually black.
Geena Davis

TeeHee@U said...

Good guess @Tricia. I also remember that scene in the begining of Pretty Woman.

Aquagirl said...

Dumb move on the gut’s part.

Super Comic Fun Time! said...

Fran Drescher? Just going on the raven hair and the fact that she was in a lot of movies and TV and she's in the Hotel Transylvania cartoons.

Carolyn said...

I don't think her hair (Laura SG) was that dark though, def not India ink dark

VikingSong said...

And the lesson here is don't disturb actors when they preparing for a scene which they are literally about to shoot. It's not rocket science.

Farmgirl said...

Zoe Saldana and Avatar?

Amartel said...

Laura San Giacomo was the only pretty woman in Pretty Woman.

s.s. said...

the thing about "how did you do that" suggests she did a child or male character so the girl who did Bobby on King of the Hill ?

DavidHowesCREBroker said...

Right on, @sandybrook!

Learned that lesson very very fast.

The Key Grip I worked with on several films told me on the first film, "Don't talk to the talent unless they speak to you first. Then, just answer their concern and get back to your job."

That scenario disappeared when us "Grips" were sitting at lunch together and Lorenzo Lamas walked up and sat with us.

To this day, Lorenzo is a regular guy now flying helicopters!

Morninglorri said...

I don’t blame her, whoever she is

kiki71 said...

Seriously. I am sorry YOU got fired instead of your friend but if the actress was waiting in a scene IN CHARACTER to run in and needed to react her "you are asking me x now" wasn't a bad statement or question to ask? I'd be pissed too by stupid extras. For many it takes a moment to 'get' in character and keep in prepped for an entrance. It was harsh she had you fired but your friend's fault, not hers. Maybe she thought you/he was going to do this the duration of the shoot or you needed to be sent a hint. NO sympathy here, dude, except for the mistaken identity part.

Carolyn said...

Maybe Mila Kunis? No idea what rating she'd be these days, but in terms of cartoons she's Meg Griffin on Family Guy.

Mila Kunis?

Mila Kunis?

Vita said...

I was thinking mila too bc of black hair, but she's had some good success in Bad Moms movies, etc, so rating thing doesnt work.

Sorry for the mistaken identity, but you told the story humorously! Thanks for sharing the blind!

Amartel: they got the wrong guy. The guy who was blamed never spoke to her.

Samantha the 1st said...

Being peeved about a blown take is one thing. No need to deprive a plebe of a day's work let alone get them blacklisted.

Mom said...

Katey Sagal.
She was on Futurama and sings as well as acts.

Amartel said...

"Amartel: they got the wrong guy. The guy who was blamed never spoke to her."

Still not her fault.

shakey said...

I guess it was something shot in either a smaller city, or a city that doesn't have a lot of casting directors.

DavidHowes, did you see Lorenzo on the Joe Schmoe Show? He was an absolute scream.

VRWC said...

That's who I was thinking.

Sal Salington said...

Ever notice how these reader blinds never know who the celeb is until someone tells them?

So cool of them. So incredibly cool.

Right.

gauloise said...

Jordana Brewster worked in a dive bar in fast and furious 1, and there were some chryslers in that

gauloise said...

dont know if she is on a cartoon, though

I just did a google search and found this "blind" on reddit its Janeane Garofalo, The movie is Clay Pigeons, hers the full post https://www.reddit.com/r/JaneaneGarofalo/comments/92sp2e/in_1997_while_filming_the_movie_clay_pigeons/

Samantha the 1st said...

Amartel: It's not her fault that she told the casting director and got him blacklisted?

That's not typical behavior, if this happened. Celebs don't call local casting agents, or extras casting agencies, or whatever allegedly happened.

Getting an extra fired for talking to you between takes is an a-hole move.

You are a true detective

Tricia13 said...

I didn’t read the Reddit thread but I came here to guess her as well.... finally hit me with all the TV(BenStillerShow/Larry Sanders ) she was dual threat(or entys version.) surprises I heard good things about her and she was nice IRL but maybe alt changed since then(I know she’s a long time sober).

Tricia13 said...

Cartoon was Dr Katz

If you were in the middle of writing an important work email and someone came up and deleted it right in front of you, you'd be really pissed, wouldn't you? It sucks that the two guys got mistaken for each other, but Janeane Garofalo is not the asshole in this situation. Friend should absolutely have been blacklisted because disrupting a scene costs the production time and money.

EponymousAnonymoud said...

Good job Canuck!

Samantha the 1st said...

No one guessed Janeane anyway.

I think we all understand that she (whoever) was annoyed someone spoke to her. Do people understand when some of us say that's not what the blind or we are actually talking about?

Nothing like stans/celeb apologists.

Samantha the 1st said...

mooshki - no I'd just check my Drafts folder.

I've had enough comments eaten here with only a "whoops" and no back button.

"Friend should absolutely have been blacklisted because disrupting a scene costs the production time and money."

He didn't 'disrupt the scene' it wasn't filming.

Had she been in character/concentrating, she would've just ignored him.

How many getting all spit-flying about this have even been on a set.

If they're filming away from Hollywood, and the extras are not really actors, and don't know any better, it's really up to the PA or someone on set to tell them how to behave.

Or, say, the casting agent? Should've briefed them.

How's her career btw?

Lo Key says stop with the censorship already! said...

@shakey. The Joe Schmoe Show was priceless! I hope they bring it back!

Puddy said...

Well that'll learn him.

Rosie riveter said...

I used to have coffee shops. Busy busy fast paced baristas. I know, totally different. However, what is NOT different is being in a zone, and being interrupted in the middle of it by someone stopping the entire flow to tell you about her dog's hemorrhoids and I swear to God by the tenth time that happens, well, anyone can snap.
So Im gonna give this a pass

EponymousAnonymoud said...

Mm-hmmm. Comedian/actress.

Samantha the 1st said...

The snapping part is A-OK and understandable.

Calling up his boss to make sure he never works again?

Not.

For me, anyway.

HushHush said...

+1000% @Samantha. It all rolls down hill.
If Production calls an agent, it's usually a thing because they're incredibly busy. Not often done. And they get the BG actor is making a minimum wage being there.

Bonby Haud said...

And the movie Ted maybe?

BRAD PITT said...

B list dual threat = Laura San Giacomo

You're asking me about [Sex Lies Videotape] right now!!!!!!!

some cartoon = Gargoyles

gauloise said...

Good job canuck!

NobodyNose said...

TIL there's an entire subreddit dedicated to Janeane Garofalo.

SlimKeith said...

Give me a break, less than 8% of all actors earn a living wage and someone who is lucky enough to get a job in that field, gets someone fired for complimenting them? It's BS. I get it might have been frustrating but #perspective. Talk about getting too big for your britches.

Samantha the 1st said...

Nic - the casting agent should loosen their sphincter a bit and grow some cojones.

Is Janeane really gonna know or care if that extra is hired for another project?

But they don't want to lose favor with the production companies, so they fold.

When I was in college, I was the editor-in-chief of the campus newspaper. One of the perks, besides the ridiculous salary (a lot of money), was going to all the shi t on campus. I got to spend training camp with the Detroit Lions, hang out on the sidelines. I also got to review the show by the inimitable Steven Wright. Which brings me to the point: I got to interview him after his show, and I asked him: So, what's Dr. Katz really like? Went on to say that it was a fun show to work on, and that he loved working with the late John Candy because "he was such a nice, sweet man."

YeahYouKnowThatsRight said...

The guy who shared this story is clearly a massive tool.
