I Want Some Of What David Copperfield's People Are Smoking

In a statement to TMZ today, David Copperfield's attorney said, "David Copperfield canceled his overseas tour because promoters did not honor their contractual commitments, including failing to make a contractual payment of more than $1 million and canceling a segment of the tour without Mr. Copperfield's consent.

"The cancellations had nothing to do with the investigation into allegations by an unidentified woman".

Maybe he is right and so he won't mind if we do a little timeline check.

Pays $72M for four islands in the Bahamas and claims they are the location of the Fountain Of Youth - August 2006

FBI Raid - October 17th
Canceled Shows In SE Asia - October 21st
SE Asian Promoters File Suit Against David Copperfield - October 24
Another accuser comes forward - November 1st

See, I would tend to believe the attorney if David had canceled the shows prior to the FBI raid. But alas he didn't cancel them until after the raid and if the promoters did back out on payments, maybe it is because they thought David might be in jail and unable to make his appearances. According to the lawsuit that was filed against Copperfield, the promoters of at least some of the SE Asia show are demanding that Copperfield return several million dollars that was paid into an escrow account to ensure Copperfield would perform in SE Asia.

If they still need a magician, I think Pamela Anderson is available and for several million dollars would probably throw in a happy ending for all paying customers.

He must use the same spin control team as the Hogan family.

What's going to happen to him anyway? The put him in jail and he ends up in Hawaii?

Okay, seriously, we all thought the girl who said she was raped was full of it because she stayed on vacation. Did you all see the facts that came out after that? He invited her to his private island saying other people were also invited and when she got there it was just the two of them. She couldn't do anything about it until she got home.

He now sounds as creepy as he looks.

He did preform a magic trick in SE Asia. He made millions of dollars disappear.

I'm gonna go on the side of the alleged rape victim on this one, too. Some people have indicated that her actions after, by not taking a shower, taking pictures of the scene, and hopping for the first flight back home, indicates a set up. To me, it indicates that woman are getting SMARTER about what to do when victimized. We spend all this time lamenting the fact that many women do not get the examination and evidence collected and needed to go forth with an investigation. But this woman knew immediately what she needed to do and lo and behold, we find out this is a real creep who almost gets off on fucking women that he doesnt and will never personally know.

Geeze, you're damned if you don't and damned if you do. I agree that she was obviously educated in what to do. It will be interesting to see how this plays out.

This is petty I know but I would I would just like to state that I did not think the victim was full of shit. I was pooh-poohed here by a few people when I dared to call another commentor on their poorly tasted comment. In fact, I believe I was told bascially to lighten up. Guess I forgot how funny rape is.

Actually, I made no determination and didn't even post in that thread. I just wrote, "we all thought" to be nice...lol. But I do recall that you were blasted and accusations were made saying the rape victim only cried rape after David never called her again. I don't recall who said what, though. It's probably better that way. ;-)

From what I've read, apparantly his handlers, as well as setting up the "illusions", also scope out attractive women, "separate" them from the party they're with, and introduce them to DC, where I guess he works his "magic" on them.

Ewwww.

And even if the woman was allegegly raped, which I believe she was, who the hell goes to a private, secluded island with no ready means of transportation to meet up with a total stranger? Stupidity on her part.

Hope David loses his shirt..

mngddess - remember she was told that several people were going to be there for a party. I doubt she thought "I bet he's lying and I'm the only one that's invited to his secluded island where he will attempt to rape me".
I'm just glad she had the presence of mind to preserve the evidence.

Cyn, she may have been a little naive in buying what he was telling her, but he's probably very convincing. He's more at fault for taking advantage of a young naive girl, and misusing his celebrity.

Here are excerpts from an article saying the Grand Jury was looking into this:

"She told investigators Copperfield assured her that there would be other guests at the 150-acre resort, which is restricted to a maximum of 24 guests and rents for up to $50,000 a night. From Nassau, the retreat is accessible only by charter plane and then private boat.

When the woman, 21, made the trip in late July -- after exchanging e-mails with Copperfield, 51 -- she found herself the only guest on the island with him, she told investigators. She has told Seattle police, and later the FBI, that Copperfield raped and struck her during her two days on the island, said sources familiar with her allegations.

She said that, afterward, Copperfield threatened her, telling her she'd better keep quiet, and then escorted her onto a plane, sources said.

After leaving Nassau, the woman flew to Florida and then Seattle, where she told her family what happened and went to the Harborview Center for Sexual Assault and Traumatic Stress, sources said. A rape kit was assembled, and a federal source has confirmed that some of her clothing was taken into evidence.

The woman also reported the matter to Seattle police, who said a report was taken but will not release it. Federal sources and others said the woman was told that the department had no jurisdiction to investigate a crime that occurred in another country, and that the department took no other action.

The woman then went to the U.S. Attorney's Office, which asked the FBI to investigate. The woman and her family live in Washington and, because her trip began and ended in the U.S. -- even though the alleged crime occurred elsewhere -- federal agents have claimed jurisdiction in the case.

Now, if I'm with my family while he's talking to me and he swears up and down that he has a resort - which is something she may have even known if she was a fan - I would think I'm going to get a room there and with staff present, etc., it should be okay.

I'm not going to fault her.
