Blind Item #8 - Murder Of The Century - A Reader Blind Item

Take the time machine back to Los Angeles,1994, to a Spanish style 1930’s apartment building near the Farmer’s Market. I was a young producer working in the television business, a recent transplant from NY, who found themselves surrounded by celebrities on all sides.

In the building to the right of me was a A+ list singer/actress who is in the news a lot lately because of her relationship with a former A+ list athlete. She was then a dancer on a TV show, and would later become a rising star due to her portrayal of a deceased Latino pop sensation. She was then living with her high school sweetheart, and had a cocker spaniel who forced my cat into a amazing Ninja routine one day when he was out on the back patio.The dog left the cat alone from then on!

In the apartment above her, at least for a while, was this former A+ list child star turned romcom actress, who currently is divorced and has her own production company. At the time she drove a vintage Toyota LandCruiser with the license plate “FlowerChild’ [the word flower was a mod daisy symbol] and once almost ran me off the road, yelling “Hey watch it, lady” even though I was barely into my 30’s.

A well-muscled, long-haired male heart throb celebrity who was famous for being famous and appearing on the covers of romance novels, also lived on the block, and I saw him in his Rolls Royce with the top down, quite often.

In the building to the left of me lived a handsome sometime soap actor and B cult movie star. He was the son of an actress who was nominated for an Academy Award back in the day, and allegedly married to one of the most notable figures in Hollywood history, a recluse and billionaire. This neighbor was adorable and a friendly guy. I’d see him outside practicing his golf swing, or driving away in his Mustang and always wave hello.

The Monday night in question was a warm Monday night of June 13th. I had gotten home early from work, about 6:00 pm. As I went into the kitchen to make myself dinner, I opened the windows adjacent to the building next door and noticed that their windows were open too. Bits of conversation, the sound of a muffled tv, music coming from a radio drifted up into my place as I sat eating dinner.  One particular conversation got louder and louder. It was impossible to ignore. One male voice was strident, panicked sounding, at the very least agitated and insistent. I immediately dropped my fork and froze. It sounded very scary.

I heard him say  “I know he killed her, but he told me he didn’t do it. He said “I didn’t DO IT, I DIDN’T DO IT” his voice rising in intensity, his speech rapid and filled with fear. “But the cops said they KNOW he killed her and that  HIS BLOOD IS THERE.” I got in my car and came here  the minute I could.”  There was then an exchange I couldn’t hear, but the other man’s tone was reassuring and calm, obviously trying to talk his friend down. It didn’t work. The freaked out guy got very frustrated and screamed out “YOU DON’T UNDERSTAND—HE WILL KILL ME.”

WOW—This was more than I had anticipated dealing with on a warm summer, early in the week night. The conversation was bone chilling, unmistakably real, the person speaking’s fear so pronounced that I had a visceral reaction. My hands shaking, my first thought was to call the police but I was so freaked out and afraid, I called my boyfriend at the time instead and told him I had just heard someone in the apartment next to us talking about a murder.  He laughed and said “Don’t worry. Handsome B cult movie star must be rehearsing his lines for the soap that he’s on. I’m sure that’s all you heard.” I swore to him that there was NO WAY that the conversation I heard was someone running lines. It was too disjointed, too real, too spontaneous to be scripted. He finally convinced me to calm down and I went to bed that night thinking “[Next door neighbor] is a better actor than I thought.”

I forgot about what I overheard until many months later—early winter 1995. Boyfriend and I had just come home from dinner with friends, and we turned on the TV just in time to see the beginning the ABC news magazine show 20/20 teasing an upcoming Barbara Walters insider scoop of the night of one of the most infamous murders of all time, featuring none other than our next door handsome B movie actor neighbor, who it turns out, had been good friends with the murder victim, and the shaggy-haired tenant of the former football player turned acquitted killer’s.

He recounted that his friend, who was declared a hostile witness by the prosecution for his evasiveness on the stand, had come directly to his apartment the day after the bodies were found, where he recounted his conversation with the acquitted killer, who he was afraid may come after him for his knowledge of what went on that fateful evening. I HAD BEEN RIGHT ALL ALONG—I HAD heard about a real murder first hand, directly from one of the most recognizable and well-known witnesses of all time, frazzled beyond belief by the events of the night before, and the efforts of his good friend to calm him down.

As a post script, we also later remembered that the morning of the murders my boyfriend’s father had teed off right before the alleged killer at a tony LA Country Club, and that the two parties had traded balls and insults, laughing along the way. Little did he know that later that night his golf companions ex-wife would be found brutally murdered at this sport legend’s own hand.

Odd how sometimes in life there is a confluence of incidents that puts you, a nobody, somewhere in the middle of a big event. That’s my own brush with one of the biggest news stories of this century. I have a few other stories to tell  and they’re juicy, but I will have to think about how to recount them without revealing myself.

I had a dream about this trial last night. I dreamed I wrote a blind about it to publish here. I attended 4 times in the family of the victims seats although I knew none of them. A family friend in the DAs office who managed the trial got me in. I was once chased into the courtroom bathrooms by reporters who thought I was the reclusive sister (Tanya) of Nicole. It was a very surreal time in Los Angeles.
I woke up thinking that publishing a blind was pointless as I had nothing else to say about it other than what I wrote here except I sat next to Dominick Dunne and Linda Duetch twice and alongside the Goldman family. Such a horrific time and a complete circus.

@Rosie: Slander if Enty can’t verify (or hasn’t verified) its truth maybe? I think I read somewhere that Enty gets away with doing what he does on this blog because subjects of his BI’s filing lawsuits against him just brings attention to the accusations/makes them look even more guilty.

Unless he was unable to verify whether a submission were true, keeping identities secret protects him.

Ah, a blind by someone who communicates for a living and therefore knows how to write intelligibly. Wonderful.

@rosie riveter

"Enty" has never truly been "anonymous". He's a former roadie whose identity being known to only 7 people allows him to have mystique, a marketing point and nothing more.

Further, if more than those slim 20 people who know his true identity revealed it, he would be hindered in using one of his primary tip generating tactics: abominable violation of the confidentiality of rehab meetings, like AA, Narcotics Anonymous, etc. Hard to show up at these meetings or loiter around them when it breaks up if you are known as a rat by too many people participating.

Now days the assorted Enties (some of whom obviously do not have English as their first language) that write the tips were to be disclosed as to their true identities, which only 71 people in the world ever know, they would also be hindered in using the abominable tactic of utterly violating patient confidentiality and rehab community discretion to get leads. Can't have that - it would involve more human decency than the creed of the gossip columnist allows for.

Lastly, most of the 39 Enties, whose identity is known only to 216.87 people in the world, want to use dirty tricks to avoid service of legal papers, such as obligatory notices prior to certain types of lawsuits and cease and desist notices, etc. Thus they try to hide behhind the identity of a former roadie who tricked a lawyer into fronting for him on one occassion. This doesn't mean they actually require anonmity for purposes of safety. They merely wish to exploit with fewer consequences legally is all.

I wonder just what dirt the former roadie had on an actual lawyer to make him pretend to be Enty for purposes of deceiving other journalists. Probably got it from violating the confidentiality of an AA meeting or other patient/rehab type setting.

Aimless Spectator said...

@Ally

Maybe YOU don't need to know.

But if you were
(1) convinced that you are killing yourself by your way of life and
(2) must allow others into your private information and choice making realm to stop that, but
(3) some despicable gossip columnist has a business model of violating patient confidentiality and rehab meeting (such as AA meetings) trust to get money and power to inflict harm on others for himself, and lastly
(4) the despicable and depraved code of gossip columnist conduct means there will be no end in sight for these violations and seeking to inflict pain on people participating in the rehab community,

might someone somewhere want the truth to be told?

The depraved indifference to human suffering practiced by this former roadie who founded CDAN, his deliberate decision to exploit people's trust and hope by violating rehab community discretion, and other factors, make this extremely worthy of comment.

Totally agree. If I cared enough I could figure out who she is (we are the same age and clearly traveled in the same circles) or call someone that could. There were a couple of buildings between Fairfax and Labrea that all the "cool" up and coming hollywood kids lived in at that time.
And Flower films is the name of Drew's production company. I would be more mindful in your future blinds - just dropping the name from the description is just dropping a name from a description.

Lots of critics, I see why some will hesitate to share stories. So Kato as telling about the blood?

Unknown said...

Don't worry - "Aimless Spectator" doesn't know what he's talking about anyway! I've known the identity of the true/original Enty since 2007, but I'll never share it here. Just know that he's a successful attorney who currently works for a major film studio. (And he certainly doesn't weigh 400 pounds or live in anyone's basement!)

The Himmmms, however, clearly WANT CDAN readers to know who they are. They've gone out of their way to include identifying details in their blinds; they just don't want the word to spread beyond this site. That's fine with me, but it's hardly the same thing as protecting Enty's name.

Guesser said...

@Aimless

Interesting troll. Obviously working for someone outed by one of the very few blinds that just might have come from privileged rehab info. Maybe. Either that or you are just some clueless rube living in some podunk town who has not the slightest experience of living in the Southlands and has no idea of just how all pervasive 'Biz gossip is. But there is more than the hint of the lawyerish about your prose which is why I'm inclined towards a straight paid troll.

In the couple of decades of being an almost local in the SoCal town where the LA Biz people go to get away from the LA scene and despite putting some effort into not getting to know these people over the years I'd heard most of the bigger blinds before. In one form or other. I've nothing to do with the Biz yet I'm only two degrees of separation from a lot of the subjects and probably three for almost all the rest of the important ones. Its a very very small world.

To give you a very trivial example of just how small a world it is a few years I was standing behind John Cleese in a cafe in Pacific Heights, both of us waiting for our order. I was tempted to make a comment about location based social etiquette. In the Upper Village it would have been completely natural to make small talk. In the Lower Village, less so, maybe a nod of recognition at most. But in SF what was the correct etiquette for such a situation. Twenty years previously I might have said something , made a joke of the situation, but given his well deserved reputation for spectacular rudeness on occasion and the train-wreck of his last divorce and being forced to sell two of his three local properties I decided it was not worth the risk. So silence reigned. Despite Cleeses obvious intrigue at my very deliberate non-response to the situation. I knew all this background stuff not because I slavishly follow celebrity gossip but because it was all essentially local "smalltown news" where Cleese lives. As I said, a very trivial example. But a telling one.

So the Biz in LA has few secrets. Very very few. Never had. The only difference now is that sites like this one make it easier for those who are not geographically local to get to hear this stuff for the first time. Nothing more. These type of stories have been floating around locally for many many decades. Pretty much since the Biz set up shop in SoCal trying to dodge the Edison patent attorneys bailiffs on the East Coast. Human nature never changes.

For all we know celebs are submitting the Reader Stories & changing some details to hide this.

CDaN's disclaimer says this site is a work of fiction fir entertainment purposes. If Enty verifies these stories or shows any indication he believes them then he is opening himself up to lawsuits.

@Aimless: are you Geffen or just a flunkie?

I have no ties to Geffen.

I find it sick, though, that a few stray rumors spread on this site has lead to such conviction of the evilness and capabilities of an entertainment mogul like him. The demonization is almost as strong as in The Crucible, where "I saw Goodie Proctor with the Geffen . . " and so forth leaves people ready to believe absurdities and perhaps commit atrocities of the disinformation sort. All as a consequence of a little rumor mongering.

Also, I'm no one's flunkie. I'm at home recuperating for an extended period, so I have time to read splooge like this and comment now or then.

@aimlessspectator Just go away.You are not wanted here

So is this the rule I've been ignorant of so many years?

1. So what if you've successfully intercepted our cellphone calls, a felony offense I point out. That still leaves me able to invoke the "you are not wanted, go away" rule.

2. Well, you've snuck in here on the pretext of being a domestic servant, but you really were hired by a gossip and intended to violate the NDA all along? Well, I invoke the "you are not wanted, go away" rule, so your fraudulent scheme goes nowhere.

3. HA! Just because you bribed a hospital worker to release private psychiatric treatment files doesn't mean you get to use that information to publish a smear. I invoke the "you are not wanted, go away" rule. Game over.

All this time I understood gossips to be people with a psychopathological need to harm others, to display their great hunger for exerting power over other humans and injuring them by use of treachery and deceit. I always thought it was hard to deal with them then, given the base and powerful motives that drive their psychopathology. But now that I know the "you are not wanted, go away" rule I will simply use that when encountering these depraved life forms, and all shall be well, huh?

re Geffen. You do know he had a completely toxic reputation in the LA music scene even back in the 1980's? And I mean completely toxic. Nothing new on this site for those who have been around for quite a while.

As for the rest, it sounds like you have no personal experience of just what a nasty swamp large chunks of the business is. On the technical / trades end of the business its not so bad, some very good people, but on the "talent" side its pretty much pure professional prostitution from top to bottom. Both a morals and a morality free zone. Debauching and corrupting all it touches. Good people usually dont last very long. But nasty people prosper. So given that the bottom feeding gossip traders of small time dirty laundry and tittle tattle which you so despise are probably some of the most honest players in the game. Which is nt saying much.

@rosie riveter ...it is technically possible in some countries for Enty to be held accountable for stories he posts. Even with the disclaimer, in the UK he could fall foul of 'publishing laws'. If you publish an item you are deemed to be part of the whole can of worms but it's a pretty hard row to hoe and it would really have to be something that caused actual harm to someone to stand up in court.

Some famous example was when Cameron Diaz and JLo sued the National Enquirer in the UK using the UK liable laws and won because the National Enquirer was sold (published) in the UK, the laws also apply on digital publishing, that's why you can't access the Enquirer's web site from many foreign countries now.

Draft proposals in at least 3 Western countries are being looked at that might seriously impact 'blind sites' where basically any site (including news papers) would be held partly responsible for comments published on their site which directly impacted someones reputation or privacy or led to injury. The whole idea was almost buried until the recent Russian Bot interference in elections, foreign govs swaying public opinion and spreading false news to impact elections reared it's head. Now it is back on the drawing board.

@emeraldcity

The way libel law works in the UK is much broader than the US but because of that over the last few decades libel lawsuits in the UK have ended up with a vastly multiplied Streisand Effect. Anyone in the public eye in the UK who brings a libel case is automatically assumed to be guilty of the "libel". They might technically "win" the libel case, the usual outcome, but in all cases the public figure loose big time when it comes to public image. So all legal council in these situations, unless your lawyers are Carter Ruck, is not to bring a libel case. Just ask the satirical magazine Private Eye at how successful the treat of libel lawsuits has been in shutting them down over the years.

So in the UK bringing a libel case by a public figure is either career ending or something a career is unlikely to recover from. Just ask Jonathan Aiken. It rarely has any upside for the public figure.

In France everyone has a legal right to privacy which is a very different thing. That law is mainly used to shutdown the very intrusive paps but would have zero impact on stories published about public figures in somewhere like Le Canard Enchaine. German law has always been very restrictive and protective of public figures but with such a supine and spineless domestic media is rarely ever challenged. Ever since the Chancellor Schroder / Daily Mail hair dye story fiasco German public figures rarely legally venture outside the domestic borders to bring such cases.
