Lil' Wayne Thrown Into Solitary Confinement

Apparently on Rikers Island you are not allowed to have an MP3 player. The guards found one on Lil'Wayne so for the final month of his sentence he will spend it all alone in solitary confinement. Gone are the waking up at 11 and goofing off all day with other inmates time he had previously enjoyed. Now he will have one phone call per week and spend 23 hours a day in his cell. All for an MP3 player. If this had been California the guards probably would have not only let him keep his MP3 player but also allowed him to bring in studio equipment and whatever else he needed. If it were Lindsay Lohan, well, she would not even be in jail so it would not matter.

The incident with the MP3 player happened back in May but there were no openings until now because they were all filled with prisoners who had done some violent act in the jail. Lil'Wayne is getting released next month which is 4 months early. You know, for good behavior. Umm, so getting thrown in solitary does not affect the whole good behavior thing?

I don't understand why you cannot have an MP3 player in prison? Can someone educate me as to why this is a problem?

Maybe it can be used as a weapon, or maybe jail is just not supposed to be enjoyable.

If having a MP3 player is such a grevious offense, shouldn't they look into who let someone bring a prisoner an ipod in the first place? Solitary confinement for that seems way over the top.

You're only allowed to have what is issued to you and what you buy in the commissary. Everything else is contraband. He knew it was wrong. He was hiding it in a empty potato chip bag in his trash can.

Jail is all about the rules. If you don't like them, don't get arrested.

But it was hidden in an empty potato chip bag! He couldn't do better than that?!?!?! What about Christopher Walken and the watch story in Pulp Fiction??? I expected more from Lil Wayne!

solitary confinement is much too extreme of a response. many psychologists consider long-term solitary confinement to be a form of torture. for more info, here is the link to a thoughtful new yorker article: http://www.newyorker.com/reporting/2009/03/30/090330fa_fact_gawande.

i don't believe celebrities deserve special treatment in prison. but i also don't think we should be happy about someone being subjected to a practice that can result in "chronic apathy, lethargy, depression, despair [and] in extreme cases, catatonia."

Well, because it's JAIL, I really don't see why he should have any kind of special privileges. But that being said if he had it on him when he went in why didn't they confiscate it? Also, I don't even remember what he did wrong but I feel like whatever it is can't possibly be worse than all of what Lindsey Lohan has done & look at her.

I don't think you should be able to have an MP3 player or anything fun in jail. Its suppose to be punitive!

Will he write his life story on the roll of toilet paper, like Warren the Ape?
