Drew Carey Speaks Out On Owen Wilson

Most of the time when stars open their mouth to comment on something topical they do so without having any experience in that situation and so come off sounding like an uninformed idiot. Drew Carey recently spoke to Access Hollywood about Owen Wilson from the point of view of a man who has twice previously tried to take his own life by overdosing on drugs.

"It's going to sound cold, but I wasn't reading the paper going 'Oh poor guy.' I was thinking I hope he (Wilson) is learning what he is supposed to be learning from this whole experience and not wasting the opportunity to learn. "There is a reason we want attention all the time. Living in Hollywood, you can get disconnected from everybody. You can feel like you are the only one. So you feel it, you hold it in, and you don't let it go and you don't try to find help because you think, 'Oh man if I tell anybody, I'm going to seem like I'm weak. I won't get a movie deal. I won't get invited to...' whatever goes through your head."

As I've said before actors are an insecure bunch to begin with and need constant reinforcement and recognition because they are selling themselves. They understand that perception influences how they are able to sell themselves, and if they are unable to get a job or no one sees their movie, they feel like a failure, and that they as humans are somehow unwanted. It is tough for the rest of us who generally work for a corporation or even for ourselves to really identify with this feeling.

The only similar feeling that most of us will have experienced is when we are trying to get a job with someone. When you interview for a job that person who is doing the hiring is looking at us personally and if we don't get the job we suck, but if we get the job just try to remember how you felt. It is not that we are so thrilled to be working for the man, we are thrilled because someone wanted us and felt we were better than everyone else. It can be the most dead end job in the world but you still get that euphoria of being wanted and needed and beating everyone else. Now, try and get a handle on having that feeling of rejection or adulation many, many times a year and it will give you an idea of the emotions an actor feels on a daily basis. Most can cope, but many cannot.

Majik, why are you spending time on the internet when you could be off feeding children in Darfur? Just because your problems aren't as bad as other people's doesn't mean they aren't valid.

This goes to show you that actors are just human beings trying to deal with their problems. But they have to do it in the public eye without a shred of privacy. I think this is very sad. I would hate for people looking at me 24/7 while I was dealing with a problem. I would feel violated. I'm sure most actors feel violated and they feel they must keep their stuff hid to keep up their careers. It's a sad state when you don't have any privacy. I'm thankful to have my privacy, if nothing else.
