Did anyone ever figure out where the cast photo on the stairway in the original BI is from?
I'm not convinced AC (if he isn't the source), isn't one of the "ten people who know".
I ran into him yesterday and couldn't help myself - I told him there was a rumor going around the internet about an award-winning actress who was actually a man, and asked him if he knows who it is.
He laughed, shook his head and immediately changed the subject!
Pinky said...
"Twisty - you said that Shimmy died when Timmy died, which is true, but undocumented. EL pointed out that her date of death didn't matter, and as he said 'if she is ineed listed as being dead' or something like that."
Too true, Pink. I only say that because people are posting they think Shimmy is (insert living actress here). If the actress in question has worked since 1985, been seen since 1985, or heard from since 1985, she can't be Timmy, because Timmy died in 1985.
What you're saying though is that there may be some actresses that appear to be still alive that nobody has heard from, and they may be Shimmy, which is true.
Pinky, I'm old. I don't sleep because I nap throughout the day.
Larry, I agree 100%. At that time, it definitely would have been easier to reinvent oneself if you claim to be outside the US. Merle Oberon is a good example. Also, Theda Bara - - supposedly some Arabian princess but in reality the Jewish daughter of a tailor from Ohio named Theodosia Goodman.
I think EL stated that Shimmy claimed to be from the Northeast, unless I'm remembering the BI incorrectly. I would think that Shimmy would have very spotty background information, or very generalized. I guess that's why KK doesn't work for me; seems to be too much verifiable backstory. I believe more in the AB connection, but there are problems there as well. The "televised" comment about the awards throws AB out of the running, although the "musical" comment could pertain. Musicals were very popular in the early 1930s. So far, it seems like no one fits Shimmy to a T.
Is it possible that AB's birth year is made up? Could Timmy have done that in order to muddy the waters?
I do think it's more likely that Timmy was a character actor, or at least more obscure. I think Shimmy is going to be the "name" and whoever stated in an earlier post that Timmy just translated better on film as Shimmy was probably dead on.
psychoticstate: Timmy's from the NorthEast, he gave no information on Shimmy's fake bio. As far as AB and the televised comment, he was referring to the "Awards Show that everyone watches on TV" - he did not say that this particular AA show was on TV, throwing AB firmly back into the mix.
Has anyone suggested Donald Madden for the possible identity of Timmy? I can't remember...He was an acclaimed, but not overly famous, stage actor who died of AIDS in 1983. He was born either in 1933 (IMDB) or 1928 (his official website---and the same year that Maggie McNamara was born, I just had to throw that in).
Only one film: 1776, many plays and television appearances beginning in the late 50's/early 60's.
I can't find any clear photos of him, but one photo on his website looks like there could be a skin condition...can't tell if it's just the image, though. Also don't know how tall he was or if his build was "slight."
http://www.geocities.com/donald_madden/main.html
I think it's going to be difficult to identify Timmy even if we have the correct Shimmy. Take a look at this pic
http://www.rupaul.com/gallery/gallery_img/ru_new/patrick.html
Now, unless you knew this was actually the same person, I think I'd guess brother and sister.
Pretty easy to fake the boobelage too! ;)
Thank you, pinky. So Shimmy could be from anywhere then.
Obviously I misread the "televised" comment. If so, I would guess that EL is referring to the Academy Awards, since far more people watch that then the GGs or any other awards show.
Right now, I am firmly behind AB. I think she fits best, although not perfectly (unless we're misreading the clues, or reading too much into them).
I don't know, Pinky, I interpreted the BI's wording to mean that this particular award show was televised.
When it came to the very big award, the one with all the television viewers, Timmy won again. There he was, the woman who was really a gay man was being honored for being the Best Supporting Actress/Best Actress of the year.
I suppose it could go either way, but thinking that it was shown on TV is part of my Gloria Grahame mantra (yeah, I know...) - she won Best Supporting the first year the Oscars were televised in 1953.
Dimes, I agree with Pinky. 'The one with all the television viewers' is current television viewing, not past.
As you know, I'm firmly on the AB train, with a possible Timmy and A Actor to boot, but the dates are really hard to swallow.
1939 for the award is before TV (although he never says Shimmy was actually on TV), and puts the timeline way before any currently living producer would be "in the know." AC and Mickey have been thrown around for JJ and neither had a wife in Hollywood in 1939. It's just so early! Also, and AB timeline puts Timmy dying at the age of 70-80+ depending on whether you think it's two or one AB.
SOOO much else fits. We're down to figuring out what part of what is wrong, is wrong!
I figure if I'm wrong and it's KK, I win anyway because the story would be so great. I secretly want it to be her anyway.
I looked into D. Madden. I found many pics...I'll see if I can dig some up. I can't remember why I discounted him...I'm getting very tired!
Need more hints.
I admit it, I have offically gone crazy with this stuff.
However, Maggie McNamara was
1. connected to SB through Von Stroheim.
2. From a website (50's body clue0
A petite brunette, McNamara was part of the 1950s vogue for slender gamines (Audrey Hepburn, Leslie Caron, Shirley MacLaine) which stood at the opposite extreme from the equally popular voluptuous sex goddesses (Marilyn Monroe, Jane Russell, Jayne Mansfield). Less chic than Hepburn, less wistful than Caron and less rowdy than MacLaine, she had a perky, determined quality not unlike Debbie Reynolds. Unlike all of the above, however, McNamara enjoyed only a partial and brief success, partly undone by a history of mental illness....
3. had a scar
4. disappeared
5. nominated for AA
6. was a model (new fashion rocks clue?)
:::::::::::thud::::::::::
Aw, I really don't want to be KK because faking such a pathetic, vividly horrible death is cold, like con-artist cold. A slap in the face to anyone who has had cancer or lost someone to cancer. I really don't think it's her. If the reveal is her, the lawsuits will fly.
Donald Madden is a great find. Now my favorite candidates are Donald Madden and Maggie McNamara. If only Maggie had ever won anything besides the BAFTA.
Maggie did a few movies in the early 50s--and stopped just before Donald's stage career got started. The only two problems:
1. She was only nominated for an A.A. She won a BAFTA, but Ent has said that was not the award.
2. She came back and did a few television programs in the early 60s. Did Donald need cash?
Is twisted sister okay? Should we check for a pulse?
Budford, I think we're safe in excluding actresses who were nominees but didn't win.
"the lawsuits will fly"
sugaree, so true. That's why I'm afraid we might never know the real answer or it might turn out to be a big joke on ENT's part.
US FEDERAL CENSUS IN NEW YORK (JAN 1920 and 1930) INFO ON AB:

Donald Madden does look slight, and he appears to have dirty blonde hair and very pale skin. And nice cheekbones.
I think you we should be looking at BAFTA awards.
One with all the television viewers is the hint.
In 1958 the British Film Academy merged with the Guild of Television Producers and Directors to form the Society of Film and Television Arts.
In 1976, the Academy was renamed the British Academy of Film and Television Arts.

Maggie McNamara -
Have you ever seen a man with arms that slender and lacking in muscle?

Please do. As soon as I stop chasing my tail and banging my head against the wall. It feels sometimes that the four or five previous threads with thousands of posts never happened and we're starting over from scratch - trying to reinvent the wheel.
And thanks for checking! ;-)

Gary, I belief EL ruled out BAFTA awards.
I'm out of town and checking in on the fly... seeing signs of progress but without my spreadsheet, nothing to contribute.... is Josephine Hull still in the running?
I have put a pic of Blake and Brady side by side..tell me it's not the same person..
http://tinypic.com/view.php?pic=66tncs8
wow .. good job chenofan .. any way you can layer them? I think blake has really pretty eyes for a man .. and her eyes are hard to see in that pic ...
The Blake/Brady angle has been my little pet project while I'm sick with the flu.

Ignore the pic of Mansfield with her hubby... and all the people who think I'm right, cause I doubt it at this point...
gogolola, I suggested Donald Madden on one of the earlier threads as the Timmy who died (there may be an earlier version of Timmy out there with a different stage name Timmy the kid, then Shimmy the starlet, then Timmy who died)). He has a fine arts education and then nothing until his late twenties, early thirties and all on the East Coast, even the tv stuff. He was supposedly gorgeous and funny as hell. However, AFTER I suggested him Ent said he didn't think Timmy had been guessed yet on this site.
sadly Donna I'm not that good with Photoshop..maybe someone else can though....
Twisted Sister said...
"Crayon, that's okay - a lot of
people have scars. Let's please stay on track this time????"
I didn't go off track. I was responding to GoGoLola's post about finding a pic of Maggie with a scar. I provided one.
BtW, I happened to catch Maggie the other night in a Twilight Zone episode and she was stunning. I can't imagine her being a man.
I'll put a post on survivor sucks where I first posted the hypothesis...
give me a minute or two.
I'd like to see pictures from similar angles, and pictures of the young Blake from the 1930s.
Knowing that Brady had an uninterrupted acting career, when did they switch places? If Alice were still alive, why did she agree to this? If Alice were dead or alive, why would her family and associates agree to this? It's the type of thing, for example, that an ex-husband would object to in his son's life.
I looked at the pics .. but I see no visible scar or scarring of any kind on either person ...
geez ..i agree that we seem to be going round in circles here ....
ent, please throw your loyal puppies a bone ...
Coming out of lurkdom to ask the following question:
Yesterday I saw reference to someone asking AC Lyles if he was JJ and he claimed that he was not. (Was that you, dimes, or someone else?) If it was someone else, who asked him? Had he heard about the BI and/or that his name has been linked to it?
Anybody mention Lynn Carter for Timmy yet?
Lynn Carter really looks like a man: http://phantomdragon.com/THELEGEND/carter10.jpg
But Ent said that three blogs guessed correctly already and I don't think any other blog mentioned her, as far as I know (could be wrong though.)
Haha, that's because Lynn Carter was a man. But probably not Timmy.
i just think it would be "*fabulous!*" if Timmy were a professional female impersonator.
Ha ha - how about Lynn Carter as Kay Kendall? Hee hee.
Now THAT would be a story.
My vote is still on KK. That trumpet scene? OMG, the angles and body language and gestures. Not to mention that it was fairly obvious that there were some serious body foundational garments going on there.
Shimmy is KK in my mind.
Hi, Angela -
I didn't see that someone else had also asked AC about this, but it's sure possible!
I saw him at a function last night - the first thing I asked him is if he uses the internet. (He doesn't - says he can't figure it out!)
Then I told him about the rumor (I was trying to stay low-key and didn't tell him his name was being bandied about!) and asked if he knows who it is.
After he laughed and shook his head, he said "You know what people always ask me? Why are there 22 stars in the Paramount logo?"
(According to Adolph Zukor, that's how many fit.)
Publicists are masters at misdirection, and despite his age, there are no flies on AC!
omigod, dimes....what a blatant subject change!
i'll have to go back and figure out where i saw the comment about someone asking him. (i've been mainly coming here for the scoop, but i've also been drooling over any timmy comments that i can get my hands on, so maybe i saw it somewhere else!)
My problem with Arthur Blake is that Schnozz!!! I guess with shading, it could possibly look like the "early" Alice Brady nose, but I'm frame-by-framing the "In Old Chicago" dvd and there's no way they're the same person, unless he had a post-Shimmy nose enhancement surgery. Besides, Blake looks in the pictures to be a lot taller than 5'7", which is what Alice Brady claims in all her bios.
I don't think it's Arthur Blake based on the fact that someone had guessed him the very first day and Ent said on Wed that he didn't believe Timmy had been named on any of the sites yet. He said he couldn't be sure because he hadn't read them all, but I'm guessing he has at least read his own.
:)
ok, i found it....this was posted a couple of days ago in the comments to the "Another Timmy Hint and a Note about MV" posting:
" kr90275 said...
Inside Scoop:
A.C. Lyles was directly contacted today (after several people spent days trying to figure this out and enlisted the help of some personally known Hollywood heavy-weights) - he is not the source of the Timmy blind item. I know that this is a bit frustrating, that was my first reaction, but I had to let you good detectives in on it. My friends and I will be going back to the drawing board regarding the possible source ourselves. With all the highs and lows I must say this has been really fun.
Keep researching!
4:58 PM "
In re-reading the BI, I realized that I was discounting some people as possibles for Shimmy because they had married. EL says that Timmy did not marry, but he doesn't say that about Shimmy. So it's possible that Shimmy may have a marriage (or two) in her bio. So we can't discount Alice Brady because she was married.
5'7" was pretty tall for a woman back in the 20s and 30s. Not saying it proves that AB was a man, but something to consider.
I think my head is going to explode from concentrating on this so much in the last week. I hope EL gives us a really good clue and soon!
If the true Timmy comes to light, every news agency around is going to pick it up, but not before checking all facts and ensuring that it's true.
That means that some old guy, JJ perhaps, is going to have to step up to the plate and vouch for Timmy's identity. Without it, you've got one heck of a good story going but not much else.
So who is going to step up and vouch for Timmy's identity? ENT can't do it; that's considered second-hand information.
Even with pictures, the reliability of the truth will have to be guaranteed by someone who can prove it.
Been reading some of the past posts of ENT.
What does this mean?
Somebody has already correctly guessed both Shimmy and Timmy?
here
Dear larry,
We thought ENT said that both had been correctly guessed here (Timmy/Shimmy), but apparently only Shimmy has.
No hints today. Feels like a very hot and dry desert and I am very thirsty. I can barely walk.... Where's my Friday hint???
OK, the picture of kk with Sandra Dee went a long way toward convincing me it's kk. Of course, Sandra Dee was very slight and feminine, but kk looks like a linebacker next to her. (Hey! Sandra Dee! We never even thought of her! Maybe she and Bobby Darren were the same person, LOL!)
I don't count the Life magazine picture of kk and rh as evidence because the poor thing might have had cancer by then and would naturally look very haggard and bony. Can't account for the "boobs" shot, either. She sure had a pair.
However, there is one big clue that convinces me that kk is the right answer and that's the "deeply closeted" nature of her bf. In the 50s Rex Harrison's publicist put out enough bushwah about what a "womanizer" he was to fill Photoplay month after month. I just don't buy it --he looked too much like Ian McKellan to be straight. Maybe they were protecting each other. Maybe, even though AIDS did not yet have a name or known symptoms, they knew kk was dying and wanted her to go with a little dignity.....and then her "stepbrother" took over.
Makes you wonder how many cross-gender actors there are working in Hollywood today.
Excuse me if this makes no sense or if it's mentioned elsewhere but I've been reading this stuff for days and haven't seen it.
The hint about the awards show says something to the effect of "the one watched by all the television viewers." Is it possible this person won an EMMY as opposed to an Oscar or a Golden Globe? The Emmys have been around since 1949, I believe. Is there an indication that this was not specifically a television film? Feel free to correct me if you think I'm smoking crack. I just wondered if that was a possibility and could maybe make a difference.
when will ENT gives us our evening hint? I am going nuts over this...I think KK is it but I feel anxious till its revealed...it has consumed me soooo much...I feel creeped out at night too as Timmy is going to appear lol I have officially lost it!!
nadiakotsev---
don't feel bad, I've been having my moments with that, too, LOL!!! Like, I *have* to get off this site before midnight now, or I swear i'm afraid that when I go wash up for bed, I'll open my eyes and see Timmy in the mirror! That George Hurrell photo of Alice Brady gave me the heebie-jeebies for two days after I saw it!
The reason that all these ladies look like drag queens to us is because ... drag queens have a special fondness for old style fame and glamour.
These ladies do not look like drag queens, drag queens try their best to look like them.
Helena,
The bathroom mirror thing happens to me too!!!!!This BI makes me feel like we are all part of some sick family of gossip lovers and I love it!!!
I am thinking that perhaps ENT is hesitating on giving us another hint because he is now realizing he is opening Pandora's Box!
The repercussions of this coming out AND being true are enormous! Think of all the interviews Entertainment Tonight will want to conduct with the other actors of that era.
Is this something ENT really wants to get out? AND betray JJ's confidence at the same time?
Perhaps ENT will narrow the list for us and then drop us a like a hot potato. Move on to other blinds like the MV blind that has everyone in a tizzy.
I truly am doubtful that ENT will reveal. If the reveal does happen, I will fall over!!
I'm going to throw Nance O'Neil's hat in the ring. She looked like a man no matter how old she was, or what she was wearing. I don't remember her winning any awards though.
is was posted on another board. hmmm...
"It is Alice Brady and this is tied into a book release for the holidays. They're still shopping for a movie and the right male lead."
Grace, I have to say I do agree with you. I have been thinking about this for days just like everyone else. But, then again, he knew we'd go nuts over the story. He even warned us before he posted it saying something to the effect of "if this doesn't effect you, you are very jaded" or something like that. He knew it would be a doozie. I think him backing out of this now would pretty much squash his credibility and would only infuriate all of the readers. It would also pretty much validate everyone who says he is a sham.
I am hoping he does reveal who Timmy/Shimmy is.
By the way, I watched the trumpet scene from Genevieve and I am more on the KK bandwagon now more than ever. Those close-up shots of her playing the trumpet were downright creepy for some reason. I can't help replaying it in my head. It's a man, baby!

What site was THAT on???
"I am thinking that perhaps ENT is hesitating on giving us another hint because he is now realizing he is opening Pandora's Box!"
Naw, he'd have to be REALLY THICK to just be realizing that now. I could understand it if he got cold feet after the first day or so of frenzied posting ... but since he's continued to provide hints even as he knows how stirred up everyone's gotten, I think that he doesn't have any fears of repercussions.

I agree, but I'm still a little confused by the boobs.

I was just complaining to my husband that we hadn't got our clue yet and he said, "relax, honey, it's only 5:20 in California. Your "lawyer friend" probably just got done with school and football practice and now has to mow his parents' grass. It won't be too much longer!"
My hubby is so supportive. I'm still voting KK, though.
cheno - say it aint so. we've be suckered? :(
I was just at data lounge and they are sad that cheno posted about the alice brady book. They are afraid that data lounge traffic will increase...I guess it is an exclusive little club?!
I don't think we've been suckered. How would that person know so matter-of-factly anyway, that this is tied into a book and movie deal?
it might be a way to increase traffic to their site.
By the way, didn't Ent say he';d reveal once we got to 2000 posts?? We're well over 2000.
"Alisonthefirst said...

They don't need to increase traffic to their site..they already have so much traffic the once free site continues to raise the annual fee just to read posts 24/7. And they no longer let non-paying members start threads there.

I agree - it's a paying site
Janele-
Ent said he'd reveal when he got to 2000 post for the blog. Not 2000 comments about Timmy...it took me a second to figure it out too.
I think Ent meant 2000 posts by him on the blog, not 2000 comments on this topic.
"relax, honey, it's only 5:20 in California. Your "lawyer friend" probably just got done with school and football practice and now has to mow his parents' grass. It won't be too much longer!"
*LOL*
Well did anyone expect any less? Why else would this come out in the first place? I'd like to see the movie now. I certainly would not have cared before. Maybe they didn't think there would be enough interest from non-gays. So much for that. LOL
If there is a Christmas release of a book, I don't see it on Amazon.com. Wouldn't it be there for preorders?
Yeah, and wouldn't the word be out there? Certainly a lot more than 10 people should know by now if it's about to come out in a book!!
I'm guessing only if the info had been released by the publisher to Amazon and other booksellers.
HOnestly, the book thing wouldn't surprise me a bit and had even crossed my mind before today. The BI itself reads like a novel and I just figure that there has to be some HUGE incentive to reveal this. Also, if ENT wishes to remain anonymous, wouldn't JJ know exactly who he is now? Whether the old guy accesses the internet or not, this story is surely getting around.
If AB is revealed as Timmy, I actually hope there IS a book to explain the whole thing!
"Grace said...

Actually how do we know it isn't?
If the title is something to do with Timmy, and we don't know for sure who Timmy is...
relax, honey, it's only 5:20 in California. Your "lawyer friend" probably just got done with school and football practice and now has to mow his parents' grass. It won't be too much longer!
Hahahahahahah!!! Hubby and I laughed hysterically over this!
A little bit on Josephine Hull, from 1978's "On Broadway" by Fehl & Stott:
"Josephine Hull went to Radcliffe - my mother's vintage. She was married to one of the leading men of the day who was so gorgeous, my mother said, that everyone got tears in their eyes looking at him. He was the brother of Henry Hull, the actor - you may have heard of him. [he played Jeeter Lester in the original Tobacco Road - a HUGE play at the time] Well the brother died young, and Josephine went on to become a delicious character actress."
Is it possible that "brother" Henry Hull became Josephine?
Time for the hint. We're just going round in circles without it.
Remember..... ENT IS AN *SSHOLE. ALL OF THIS IS REALLY GOOD FICTION.
This is all made up BS. It's really good BS- but stop thinking some *sshole who pretends to be some connected Hollywood lawyer has some insight into the biggest Hollywood scandal EVER. It's fiction BS!!! HA! He probably got grounded from his computer because he forgot to mow the lawn!
Henry Hull died in 1977.
And he has a daughter named Shelley who is a TV producer.
oops make that SON named Shelley Hull..
As crazy as everyone's going.... be prepared. Dominique Swain has never heard of this guy. And he made up a really good Blind. There's no clear cut winner- because this is all made up!
Just found this tid-bit about KK.
The author of the play on which the film was based, William Douglas-Home, was visiting Harrison, who had left his wife to live with Kendall, when the phone rang. Harrison called for her to answer the phone, even though she was in the bath. Wearing only a towel, she took the call, waved merrily to Douglas-Home, whom she had never met, and returned to the tub. The towel was on her head.
The movie was the Reluctant Debutante. So basically this William Douglas-Home got to see her butt naked.
Alice Brady is looking more and more convincing to me. I still can't get over the KK Leukemia Fund either. That is a big throw off for me.
Here's a link to who I "think" got it started.
http://www.charity-commission.gov.uk/registeredcharities/showcharity.asp?regno=290772%20&submit=Run+Search
James Arthur Sainsbury but who is this and did he know KK? I was researching the charity to see if I could tell what year it was formed. Looks like around 1984. I wonder if he was connected with Kay or her family.
Just out of curiosity, Anon, how do you know DS has never heard of ENT?
How convenient. Timmy started a fund for "Kay" right before he died.
Who is Dominique Swain and what do they have to do with this?
Rakemama- totally fair question. I have no proof. But since we're still all such great friends with mystery ent- what proof does anyone have that ent knows DS.
And Jusshopn- Dominique Swain is a wonderful actress. Ent pretended she was "guest blogging" on this site- but gave us no proof.
Then any time grief occurred on this site, ent made up some historic BI to give "his"site major traffic- and to make his flemming readers forget his faux pas'. IMO.
Someone may have posted these, but here are the Josephine Hull papers from Harvard Univ. Library:
http://pds.lib.harvard.edu/pds/view/2582484?n=1&s=4
I didn't read too much of this, but it seems like Hull could be discounted based on four years of diary entries... lots of entries about cleaning, washing, buying people wedding gifts, picking raspberries. I don't mean to pass gender-biased judgments, but the diary strikes me as more feminine than masculine.

But "Timmy" passed away from Aids-related complications, not KK.
Also..it in fact DID exist in the 50s..it just wasn't called that:
"Last year, researchers said they had found the first known case of Aids - in a Bantu man who died in 1959 in the Belgian Congo, now the Democratic Republic of Congo and the home of the sub-species of chimps."
that's from the BBC News sci/tech site
Eagerly awaiting our next Timmy clue.
This is fun. I don't care if it's some sort of viral marketing for a book/movie or pulled out of Ent's pearly white butt cheeks. This is a great group of people having a good time learning and talking about old Hollywood.
anon, go play somewhere else if this bothers you so much. You're trolling is juvenile and disruptive.
I somehow don't think Kay Kendall was hanging out in the Congo with chimps in the 50s.
