Lady GaGa Admits She Doesn't Pay Overtime - Calls Herself Queen Of The Universe And Employees Slaves

About a year ago, I wrote about a former personal assistant for Lady GaGa who had sued the singer for almost $400K because of 7,000 hours of unpaid overtime. Well, Lady GaGa finally gave her deposition in the case and it must have been amazing. First, according to the NY Post, she called the woman suing her a f**king hoodrat. Nice. Then, she said that she pays none of her employees overtime and that everyone knows that and they should never expect any. Finally, she had this to say, "She’s just — she thinks she’s just like the queen of the universe. And, you know what, she didn't want to be a slave to one, because in my work and what I do, I'm the queen of the universe every day." So, basically, yes, what she did was call herself queen of the universe and her employees slaves to the queen. Nice. I'm guessing GaGa does not get many Happy Bosses Day cards.

I just met someone who knew a former employee of GaGa and I was shocked at horrible she treats people who work for her, what is all this peace and love crap about, don't forget all the people that make you who you are honey, it is not just the little monsters. Lost some respect for her and this news item just clinches it.

I think she is the biggest fraud ever. Someone who can't use their real name and take on a new persona has some real issues. She can't even write good songs. Her music, if that's what you call it, SUCKS. But she knows what she's doing when it comes to catering to simple minded followers. Its the same thing as the Twilight phenomenon. People are stupid.

Just because Anna Wintour runs her assistants ragged doesn't mean she isn't breaching labor laws and does not make it right to expect anyone to be on call 24-7 without being compensated.

@Elle Kaye

Hi Elle! That is too bad about Celebitchy. I thought it was moderated! Not moderated enough, apparently. It's sad when that happens to a forum. Maybe if you wait awhile to see what happens the person will leave.

Carolyn is correct. I know I made digs too but let's not acknowledge they are there. You can't continue to have an argument with yourself.

Oh I don't know - I argue with myself every Saturday morning about doing the housework. : )

@Tina Mallette:
Exactly - in total agreement with you there.

I thought I was the only one who thought that this chick is an ass. I would take this job in a heartbeat.

I've been to several depositions. After reading some news stories about how she acted during the depo, frankly, it gives me a REALLY bad opinion of her. Whether she's right or wrong, she showed ZERO respect for everyone involved in the depo. I can't be a fan any more. This says more about her character than anything else.

The world has created yet another self absorbed, entitled, holier than thou celeb. Don't forget who made you what you are Gaga. If it weren't for the masses, you would be nothing.

I was going to comment earlier when all the shit was going down but I was just to busy cleaning my 20 litter boxes. Ha ha I love how easy it is to pretend to be someone else on the intramanet. I was totally lying, I don't have 20 litter boxes, I just let my cats shit all over the floor. Any who I forgot now what I was going to write so I'll just go back to drinking my Mountain Dew and let my lil' mongrel finish picking the Cheetoh crumbs out of my back boobs

@SusanB

I totally agree with your assessment. She's showing herself to be an immature little bitch.

I gotta say, especially with all of @person's comments deleted, this reads like entertainment!!

I am going to get some popcorn with Geebz, cause this is kind of awesome.

ps: um, does f&ckin hoodrat sound horrifically not okay to anyone else?

I like how you made a puppet out of a sock.

BTW, I lived in a trailer for a while growing up. I wear my trailer trash badge proudly. Although, these days I am more proud of the porta-potty in my front yard on Google street view.

I know, I know, don't feed the trolls. But it just feels like coming back to my first internet home on the Brenda Board. Look! This time Person even trotted out the time-tested "Yer fat and ugly and own cats!" (I do, btw, one black cat, one yellow lab and variety of children.)

Lucas: Forget about Goatse--our troll(s) should look up Tubgirl! (The rest of you: For the love of God, DON'T look up Tubgirl! You don't want to see it, trust me--Goatse is nothing compared to the Tubgirl gross-out factor, and I don't think there's enough brain bleach on earth to wipe that one out of your mind. (This is the point where I whip out Rule 34: If it exists, there's porn of it. I think Rule 35 is "If there isn't already porn of it online, there will be very soon" or some such, but Rule 34 is a definite. Just try not to think about it too much, OK?)

Signed, the woman who's fat but not ugly, and only has one elderly cat who's curled up sleeping near me...sorry, Trolly McTrollson! :-p

I am amused by people who behave in such matter, though. It's funny to read their responses. I just dislike inaccurate information regarding MH issues, or anything in that classification to be significantly misrepresented, purely because I have a great deal of respect for individuals I treat having the courage to seek treatment. It has been so stigmatized until recent times and it's hard enough acknowledging that everything isn't kosher, let alone recognizing you may not be able to make everything okay by yourself. So I guess it's about respect, for me.

Dunno if any of you ever experienced the Internet back in the day when Bulletin Board Systems (BBSes) were all the rage and 2400 baud modems were the shit. My brother, who is one of the finest men I will ever know, hooked us up back before I was a teenager and rhe word troll was being used even then. Some thinga just don't change.

prolixe said...

@Gayeld - puppet out of a sock! HA!

@mybrother - I did in school and yeah, I remember those BBS trolls! This site kind of reminds of the old day BBSes with the black screen and colored text. Oh, the headaches.

LOL! You are so right. I was so excited when Sportster 1.4k baud modems came out and I honestly couldn't believe it when fiberoptics came out that could connect with no phone line! Good gracious. It wasn't that long ago. I never expected the Net to explode to how it has, though. At least no ANSI graphics. LOL

@Robin intramanent Rule 10: say don't look up certain thing so everyone feels compelled to search for it. See: Count Jerkula/Shorty Mac (now excuse me while I find some cute pictures of kittens cuddling)

It's been a few years now and I don't know if it's true for every state -- Denying a salaried employee overtime is legal if the employee is in a supervisory or management position and has more than two employees that report to him.

Supervisory duties include hiring and firing of employees, writing their schedule, assigning work, giving performance reviews, etc. If he did none of those things (probably didn't) he may have a case.

I think Gaga is very talented and I like her (well, her singing and music) but after reading that full article about the depo I have to say I have lost a lot of respect for her. Oh, I think Gaga is in the right on this. 75K a year is a damn good salary, and yeah I am sure there are times where you are worked off your feet, but there is also alot of downtime, plus you get to stay at fancy hotels and meet famous people, and no doubt get TONS of freebies on the side, so I don't get why this woman is suing her if she knew all that before she signed on. But the way Gaga stated her position sounded childish, petulant and not very intelligent IMHO. But I guarantee you, Gaga ain't the only celeb who behaves and thinks this way, so for her staff's sake, I hope she is alot more chipper on her "on" days than she is on her off days.

@Robin - Damn you. I had a Rule 10 error and will never be able to unsee that.

@Maja, google "urban dictionary tub girl" with safe-search on. Don't click on any links, just read the first description. Restart your computer and go take a shower.

I worked in the music industry for a big label. I was paid 37.5 hours per week but would normally clock in around 70. This was due to having to attend all launches, movies, parties, cruises, dinners etc etc. it was considered part of the job, everyone did it, if you didn't want to, there were many people waiting in line who would...

@Agent...me?

Lol, I was gone all day but for what it's worth, it's not just being salaried that exempts you, you have to meet one of several standards for an exemption (things like being "management" "talent", etc). I seriously doubt that Lady Gaga's assistant meets any of the several exemptions. Her statement isn't going to do her any favors imo.

If you could exempt overtime just by salarying people, no one at Walmart would be paid by the hour.

(looks like this thread had an exciting day)

Lola's summary of this thread:

Gaga is wrong
Gaga is right
Troll, troll, troll
You ass!
You horrible person!
GUYS! Don't feed the trolls
I'm not gonna feed the troll, but...
Did you see the office?

Repeat.

;)

Basil said...

@lola, you're right about Gaga not doing herself any favours. Instead of getting personal and petty, all she had to say was that the job was salaried, the hours weren't consecutive 8 hrs/day, but travel and business expenses were covered, and there were perks to the job etc etc, and the plaintiff AGREED to all that before she was hired. Not sure who Gaga's lawyer is, but he or she should have prepared her better that he or she obviously did.

Robin the Mad Photographer said...

Oh, dear...sorry about that. I should have realized that just mentioning it would make people want to run out & see it, but I swear my intention was merely to tweak the troll who was bitching that this was the worst thing he'd ever seen online... *cringe* And no, I'd never actually heard of Rule 10 before, but I'll keep it in mind from now on.

Now if you'll all excuse me, I need to go cuddle my elderly kittycat for a while...

OneGirlRevolution said...

Agreeing wouldn't exempt Gaga from having to pay overtime. Minimum wage standards (and accompanying pay laws) are to protect workers from unscrupulous employers. You can decline to go after an employer for wage violations but you can't sign away your rights to fair compensation. (Well, you can sign it but that doesn't make your agreement lawful.) And in fact, the government can sue for your rights even if you decline to.
