Sides in what?
Scio divorce.
He's probably glad not to have to spend time with weird Juliette.
Thanks, so the two women are siding with the wife.
Glad to hear that Beck has come to his senses
He must be thrilled.
Ooh I don’t think anyone guessed Erika Christensen.
No, I just thought the same thing.
If Juliette and Erika are both tight with his wife, and the split is acrimonious, this feels fairly normal regardless of religion.
It does. Except that Scientology isn't a religion; it's a cult.
BG implied he was abused by a church member when he was younger and wanted to go public but his wife didn't.
Beck was an on/off member of the Church for a long time. His father, who is a famous string arranger for pop projects, is a scientologist. After he split from his longtime girlfriend (the one he started to date before "Loser" and Mellow Gold, until Midnite Vultures), he had a brief affair with Winona Ryder, released his best album, then was put together with Marisa Ribisi, and he became much more attached to scientology. That was the time the second, less interesting, part of his career started.
All religions are cults
So Beck is getting a divorce from Marina Ribisi? Aren't her family generational members of Scio?
I have to say I have wondered about unhealthy sexual family dynamics there.
@Angela, thanks for the great, well-thought out info as per your usual, some of what you share seems right on the money, but a lot of it is stuff I'm not well-versed in nor have heard any inside info about so can't put it together. And discernment is important.
Nice to see intelligent comments here without the angst and personal attacks, baggage too, so boring.
Would love to hear more of your info--is this research and observation and/or insider info you're drawing from? :)
I have zero insider information, just personal perspective and public facts.
Beck's father, David Campbell, has been involved in a lot of famous albums and records since the seventies. He played on Carole King's Tapestry. He was on "Let's Get It On", "Lean on Me". He did the strings on Adele's 21. Basically, he's the go-to guy for string arrangements in L.A., for pop albums and sometimes for film scores.
Yet, Beck was mostly raised by his mother, Bibbe Hansen, who considers herself Jewish. That may be why he alternatively mentioned in early interviews that he was a scientologist or that he was Jewish. When he states a full name, it is Beck Hansen. Bibbe was quite the Bohemian in her days. She was around Andy Warhol's Factory for a while, she had two kids with Campbell, and it was probably during the time she was married to him that she delivered the Ribisi twins, as their parents were also Scios.
I loved basically everything Beck put out during the nineties, his early albums. Mellow Gold, Odelay, One Foot in the Grave, Mutations, etc. After Midnite Vultures, he found out the his long-term girlfriend had cheated on him, they broke up, and he ended up writing the songs that made Sea Change. If you have the opportunity, listen to the whole thing in surround. That's one weird mix, with instruments that rotate around your head during songs, and it's amazing.
Winona Ryder had some well-known crush on him (like she had on half the guys playing acoustic guitars in her age range and in a relationship), they briefly dated after his break-up (he admitted it was a mistake to start a relationship with her so early after the break-up), and he ended up reconnecting with Ribisi and marrying her.
Most of his recent albums sound like retreads of his earlier work. There are still good or great songs, but he reproduces the sound of his previous projects with less creativity. Guero was Odelay part II, Morning Phase was a deliberate sequel to Sea Change, etc. Honestly, Sea Change is one of my favorite albums. I almost fell asleep after three songs from Morning Phase. But in the meantime, mainstream audiences started to get familiar with his style and to accept it, so the praise he gets is well deserved, it's just that he's getting it for the wrong albums.
Even after the divorce, I don't see Beck leaving Scientology for good. He's been too involved with the cult since he was born, his kid will stay with the CoS, etc. What I hope for is that he will get less advice to play on the safe side. Even if some other musicians would be ready to kill to get a fraction of his creativity on this "safe side", he needs to venture out of his comfort zone more often. Maybe dating outside of the Church will allow him to find this spark again.
Erika Christensen is a raging nut job. Scientologists are deeply disturbed people.
Beck is no longer involved with Scientology, he considers himself Jewish which is his Mothers born religion.

It's uncanny how L. Ron Hubbard's work mirrors the work of satanist and luciferian Aleister Crowley.
Amen, timebob.
Oh yay! Beck away from Co$ is a good thing!
