James Spader Confirmed As New Boss At The Office

In the season finale last year, I thought James Spader was the best actor they put in that episode, but I am also unsure if it would translate into an entire 26 episode season. It will certainly provide a new dynamic and make The Office dramatically different than it was in the past. The lines you write for Steve Carell as Michael Scott are not the same you write for James Spader as Robert California. I kind of enjoyed Creed being boss. A whole season if him being the boss could be hilarious.

  1. It sounds like James is hired as Michael's replacement, but within weeks he managed to become CEO of Sabre. So the branch manager position is still vacant. Hopefully this means we'll just see him occasionally.

  2. So not excited about the creepy Robert California joining The Office. Although I think it will just be the occasional guest spot since he will be the new CEO and the 1 taking Michael's place has not been announced.

  3. The only reason I will watch the Office is for James Spader I thought he was the only good thing about the finale.

  4. Dude creeps me out. Always has. It's a strange element to bring to a happy go lucky show. Glad he's not going to be a regular.

  5. I always say I need more James Spader in my life. Thank you to The Office for giving him to me!

  6. I never once watched The Office until the show they had Spader on. I loved him on Boston Legal and several other shows and movies he's been in and I just knew he'd make The Office worth watching and I was right. Now, I'll become a regular viewer. Can't wait to see Spader BRING IT!!!

  7. @Ashlea he creeps me out a bit too and I typically go for tall, dark and handsome, but I'd do him in a minute if he were in his Alan Shore character!

  8. I am hyped up at the news. I thought he was hilarious as was the casts' reaction to him.

  9. Robert California? LOLOL. I'll watch just for him.

  10. Ever since I saw him in "Secretary" and of course as Steff in "Pretty and Pink" I have had serious James Spader fevah!

I really really hope that if he is indeed the CEO that they put Ricky Gervais in as branch manager. It would work really well and counter Spader's creepy character.
I'm still sad that Michael Scott is no longer a character on the show and cant help but feel that anything they do now will be jumping the shark. I think the only way to dissuade that from happening is really to have an original Office castmember come in.

  12. I frickin love Spader. He's fantastic. As long as they don't try to slip Catherine Tate in the back door, I'll be happy.

Let's face it, The Office has had some writing problems the last couple of seasons. I would really like to see it reboot this season and find its old groove back. Don't know if the exit of Michael Scott will ultimately help, hurt, or have no affect on the show, but adding a solid actor like Spader to the mix is definitely a step in the right direction.

Then again, after 8 seasons, maybe it has just come to its natural end.

  13. he was so brilliant in the short scene last season that he blew everyone else out of the water. I'm so glad they went w/him and not a michael scott clone or will ferrell.

  14. I think its totally brill move. The writing has really suffered and he will inject new life and make it his own, like he did with Boston Legal. Agreed though, Creed would be brillant and he is the most senior staffer, so why no. It's nice that the other characters are being focused on, and Jim is just not reacting with that goofy grin. The way he looked at the James Spader character was genius.

  15. Creed as manager wod work for 1-2 episodes. Longer than that the show would lose its credibility bc M Scott, clueless as he was, he was supposed to be a great salesman. Creed has no redeeming value- n he steals. Putting him there permanently wld drive t show to a dead end ala jump the shark.

  16. He's not replacing Michael Scott...he's replacing Kathy Bates' character. Steve Carrell's replacement has not been decided on or announced yet.

  17. Exactly David, Creed would have gotten himself fired after a week as being manager.

I'm not really excited about James Spader being CEO. I think he will be on more than Kathy Bates, making him more of a regular cast member. The manager spot will go to Jim, Dwight, or Andy. It will be completely ridiculous if Dwight became manager, Andy doesn't have experience, and Jim doesn't want to. I would prefer they just hired a new character to be the manager.

I think anyone who just starts watching The Office after 7 seasons only for James Spader is probably not going to stick around.

  18. Rose - I watched for four seasons then got bored with Michael's same old annoying schtick...I loved all the other characters, honestly. I'm excited about Spader. I laugh just even thinking about his guest turn on Seinfeld as the alcholic trying to make amends to everyone....except George.

  19. Now, could they bring Maggie Gyllenhaal on for a few episodes? That, I would watch.

  20. I am so super excited for this. His performance on the season finale was one of the best moments ever on The Office. My husband and I watched it at least 20 times.

    Sweetiebird, ditto!

  22. Love Spader, but I think he should have been hired to resurrect 2.5 Men. I had it all planned: he would have played the cold-blooded and diabolical executor of Charlie's estate who made Berta, Evelyn, Alan and the kid all live under one roof in order to meet the terms of Charlie's will: that all four live together for a year in the beach house before they could split his fortune. But does Hollywood listen to *my* ideas? Nooooo.

  23. @Jasmine: Have you seen JS in "White Palace?" It's such a sweet little gem of a movie with him and Susan Sarandon as a completely mismatched couple who turn out to be exactly right for each other. You should give it a try! :)

  24. @BlankPrincess- ya know, I have heard of that movie but never watched it. I think I'll give it a try, especially since all this Spader talk has implanted him on the brain :P
    Thanks!

  25. I also love James Spader because it seems like he just doesn't give a shit about what anyone thinks. (And, Secretary is one of my favorite love stories!)

I don't think Creed works for the long haul as Michael's replacement. Dwight would be the best obvious choice in terms of carrying on the tradition of a weird, hard to handle boss. But how about putting someone else unexpected in the position-someone who just kind of pops up out of nowhere-like Angela?
