Daily Mirror Blind Item
Which hypocritical singer preaches about third world poverty, but behind closed doors demands ridiculous seven figure advances on new record deals, and is rapidly getting a reputation as something of a champagne socialist...

Madonna!!!!!!!!
Pop star Madonna will boost her image as a serious campaigner against child poverty, as she plans to make a film out of the documentary footage she’s been shooting in Malawi.
Titled Raising Malawi after the charity she founded in the country, the film will include footage of the orphanage from where she adopted her son David and interviews with key political figures in the fight against poverty, such as Nelson Mandela.
A source told the Sun: “She has poured her heart and soul into this movie and believes it will have the same effect on the world as the Live Aid concerts.”
But I also thought of Bono.
Bono?
Bob Geldof?
Chris Martin?
Maybe I am missing something but why does demanding a million dollar advance when you are selling millions of albums make you evil? All you are doing in effect is getting an interest free loan from your record company. It's not like they don't get their money back.
PREACHES: Papa don't preach reference?
Bono.
Bono?
M.I.A
I'd go with Bono.
If the singer can demand a 7 figure advance based upon record sales, then so be it. Why should we care how much money a specific person earns. They can choose to give their money (or not) to whomever they please. If it is Madonna or Bono, they both do a great deal for world poverty. Are they supposed to live their lives in squalor?
has to be madge.
ice angel:
SQUALOR!!!
There's a word I haven't seen for a while in print. I dig it!
Squalor, squalor, squalor, squalor!!!!
I'm in a weird mood, forgive me.
Oh, and I think it's Madonna. Bono hasn't done any "new" albums for a while, and she just had one come out, so I'm going w/ Madge.
My vote goes for Kanye.....he is turning into a jackass in general.... a talented jackass, but still a jackass
Hate to say it, but I thought of Bono first.
Sting.
I thought of Bono first, but I think I'm going to lean towards Madonna too. She really just jumped on the socialist train, Bono's been at it for quite a while now.
If a star can recoup their advance then that's fine. The reason the seven figure advances are "ridiculous" would have to be because the singer is not selling as well as he or she needs to be in order to recoup all that money.
Hard Candy isn't doing so hot - it's only gold right now and will be lucky to push platinum by the end of the year. Confessions on a Dance Floor sold 1.6 million, and American Life only sold 700,000 (though it was certified platinum based on shipments). Platinum is fine, but I'm not so sure it's worthy of a seven figure advance.
Of course it could be some lesser British star rather than a big name star.
Oh, and I also was assuming that by seven figures they meant something like 5,000,000+ rather than the "minimum" seven-figure, 1,000,000.
I am going with Madonna. The DM is probably afraid to say anthing about the Irish Oprah.
I'm goin with Bono or Sting. Sting had that charity in nyc he was skimming from, and Bono just irritates me with his self righteousness. He means well, but the pompous attitude is unnerving.
Bob Geldof sucks. He only did Band Aid cuz no one gave a shit about the Boomtown Rats (cuz they suck) so he did it for publicity, and it worked. He got knighted because of it! And he does nothing while his daughter buys coke on camera and shacks up with Pete Doherty.
I don't know about that last comment, other than Boomtown Rats were certainly a joke, but I'm currently watching "Geldof in Africa" which came out a couple of years ago in the UK. Despite it being Bob Geldof running around Africa in a beat up Landrover, I would find it really hard to believe that all this "Africa Business" with him is all an act. He might have some wild daughters with ridiculously fantastic given names, and hell, he was Pink in The Wall, but I think that some part of him really gives a genuine shit about poverty in Africa.
And, yes, it's totally Madonna. She's sold a million concert tickets worldwide so far on this tour, so she can probably ask for all the advances she wants.
I thought Madonna owned her own recording company and therefore would not have to insist on heavy advances.
Also that she didn't drink.
I'm sure Bob Geldof cares now, but I remember hearing something around the time he was knighted that another musician was the one that brought all of the suffering in Africa to his attention, and he basically took it and ran with it. Even though it wasn't his cause, he saw the potential in it, all the while making sure cameras were recording his "humantarian" efforts. Band Aid became more successful than anything else he ever did, so he stuck with it.
He definitely did a good thing, but I'm not sure I believe his motives were pure (at the time).
Thats all :)
"Champagne Socialist" is just a term, it doesn't require that one actually drink champagne, LOL.
I'm on the Bono train.
At first I typed, "I'm on the Bone train"....lol
No way in a million years that this is Bono. For one thing, U2 getting a seven-figure advance on a record deal is definitely not ridiculous. They've basically been the #1 band in the world since 1987. In addition, the guy who has probably done more to alleviate poverty in the developing world than any other individual in history (along with Muhammad Yunus) is about as far from a champagne socialist as you can get. He would never have that sort of reputation in the press.
I think Bono. No one takes Madonna seriously when she talks about serious world issues, anyway.
bona came to mind first for me, too, and i NEVER have a guess at the blinds.
madonna's a given, there was such a stink over the adoption, and you KNOW that was only for attention.
it'd be a shame if it's bono, so i hope it's madonna, cuz i've never liked her anyway.
Except that Bono grew up with a social mentality. Madonna did not and, like Gayla wrote, she's new to the philanthropy stage. I think it's her.
Also, I think she should get whatever she can but this item describes the advance as "ridiculous" so I'm thinking it's way, way more than a measly one million $.
Bono or Chris Martin (Coldplay).
Either or. Prolly both.
Bono has been known as the for awhile now, infact he called himself that in an interview years ago.
Madonna! Now that the adoption is official, will she change David's name to the best PR move evar!?
