ReplyDeletebtw, Edgar did Frankenstein.
Very cool guy, leaves some great records for us to enjoy.
ReplyDeleteRIP. He could really play. He will be missed.
ReplyDeleteRock N Roll Hootchie Koo RIP. I was just talking about him to someone last week because he was coming here to play a bar in September for the 2nd time.
ReplyDeleteThe Edgar Winter Group did Rock and Roll Hoochie Koo (also Frankenstein as mw843 mentioned).
ReplyDeleteRIP Johnny Winter
I saw Johnny close the show at the 1999 A Day in the Garden concert at Yasgur's Farm. Almost all the yuppies left after David Crosby finished, and it was lots of rowdies who spent all day drinking in the hot sun left out there.
ReplyDeleteIn like a finger snap the acid wore off, and my friend and I spent most of Johnny's set sitting on a blanket, laughing as we talked about all the crazy stuff we saw that day, but were too fucked up to talk about at the time. Old burned out hippie dude getting smashed in the head w/ about a 2 lb rock. The scrawny lil bird/bat looking boy, who was crouched down nibbling on a PB&J. The stumble drunk chick who tripped on her flip flop causing her to go down and her sundress to go up. The 2 50something squirrelly accountant looking guys who were begging anyone under 30 for weed. And on and on.
I don't remember a song Johnny sang that night. I just remember the rocking blues, the great feel of the crowd that was left and all them damn laughs.
RIP, Brutha.
Hey I just accidentally referenced him here the other day.
ReplyDeleteI wonder why. 70 is the new 60.
I can't believe he was only 70. When I first saw him back in the 1980s, I thought was 70 then.
ReplyDeleteSadness, RIP.
ReplyDeleteNice story Count. Your words painted pictures.
ReplyDeleteI never heard of this guy but if he is anything like stevie ray Vaughn I'm sure I would like him.
Still Alive and Well no more. RIP. Thanks for all the great shows! Last time I saw Johnny he was sitting for the entire concert. Maybe it was at Antones, can't remember. Not sure where Rick Derringer would have been without Johnny. They were fantastic together. I still know every word to Highway 61. He played original Woodstock in 65 and the reunion in 79. Didn't every true record collection have a Johnny Winter bootleg? I still have one. I was in the first few rows at the Fox in Atlanta when I saw him there, with Rick Derringer. Might have been one of those midnight concerts. Amazing music!
ReplyDeleteI love the blues and Texas blues in particular. Very sad news.
