Today's Blind Items - Old Hollywood

Her first film was essentially her last. This actress had been a hit in theatre when she met this A+ list director. One f the all-time greatest directors. They hooked up while he was married and eventually he left his wife for the actress. She moved out to Hollywood to live with him. She wanted to be in a movie and he cast her as the lead in what would become a multiple Oscar winner. The thing is though, on the first day of filming he met an extra who would later become his wife. They would remain married to each other for the rest of their lives.

Anyway, here he was, hooking up with this extra on the set of a movie where his newly installed live in girlfriend was also working. It was like one of his comedies. To make things easier, the director reduced the part of the live in girlfriend to a third lead so she would spend much less time on set. Meanwhile, the romance with the extra saw the director having her move into a hotel suite he also used for himself when he didn't want to go home.

Soon, the extra demanded that the live in girlfriend be moved out and the extra further demanded that the director have nothing to do with the actress again. As in making sure he never even ran into her at any studio or on any production. The director did this and gave the live in girlfriend enough money to live on for a year and told her he would make sure she could not work in Hollywood any longer so she should go back home or leave the country. She left the country and barely worked ever again.

Sort of sounds like Charlie Chaplin with Oona Oneill as the extra. As for the actress - Joan Barry maybe? but can't find any indication that she had left the country. Movie was Shadow and Substance.

This has to be Orson Welles. Not sure of the actress.

Bully probably works, lol.

I love the old Hollywood blinds. They're kardashian-free.

Courtney said...

I love them, too. They're soooo much more interesting and juicier! Nothing in this era surprises me anymore.

That was entertainment back then

I've always loved pre 90s movie and music

Ah, Old Hollywood, when there was no Instagram or Twitter or Facebook and there were no "stars" from YouTube or E! or realty shows.

Billy Wilder and (future wife) Audrey Young in The Lost Weekend. Although I'm not sure who the live-in girlfriend was.

Ah, old Hollywood where none of the stars names started with a "K"

OK I'll shut up about the kardashians but what a joke

Definitely not George Cukor

This is it.

Oh, I didn't see you down here - you're correct, in my opinion.
Doris Dowling's wikipedia page says she dated Wilder.

I love the old Hollywood blinds too, but I also love the K-trash, teen mom, B & J Bieber and Hadid blinds because these people are huge in our culture, that get only backside kissing non coverage from the DM/ kneepads non media.

Studio54 said...

Just to add: The DM has a very good business model on how to get all sides to click on an article. First of all, there's an article every day on certain people because they get clicked on the most. However, there are thousands of people like me that will click on an article of "someone's" lastest photoshopped to the max seflie my favorite new trainwreck couple, Blac Chyna and Rob, Caitlin, who is pushing 70 wearing a miniskirt, to go straight to the comments. It just a laugh riot to read the world is a global village, that if you are posting from the US, London, Dubai, Australia, it doesn't matter, the opinions are just the same, except for the paid posters that love everything they do.

this works...except that Doris Dowling had a VERY long career after The Lost Weekend. That doesn't fit the part of the blind that says she barely worked ever again...

carolinalily said...

But Doris Dowling had a very long career after The Lost Weekend, so I don't think this works...

And when non of the 'Stars' we know cause it was all so long ago...

Every single one you named is only "huge" because people keep craning their necks to gawk at the ridiculousness that just keeps getting reported, despite the fact that no one actually gives a flying fuck.

William Wyler.

May McAvoy for actress that never worked again after Ben Hur.

Margaret Tallichet for second wife.

I could care less about dead people, give me more Kardashian blinds!

Zilla1 said...

How about dead Kardashian blinds? :)

Csf said...

Yeah, not me. But it's flattering that you'd pick the name. Best, csf.

Honeybunny said...

Now that's a Kardashian blind I like.:-D

I'm going to jump on this. I know Dowling had other movies besides this but I've read that her career "revived" in Italy and that happened right after The Lost Weekend with Rome, Open City in 45. She was a very pretty woman.
Great work, El.

crystalmeh said...

I was thinking that the only show I'd watch concerning them is "killing the kardashians" or "kutting the Kardashians" or something like that

Just kidding. But

The BI is not totally correct. Dowling worked a lot, but had to go to Italy for a few years before she came back to the US.

Go to gravitar. Seriously. You can sign up for an account, connects to your email of choice then pick a rare avatar (personal pics are best).
Trolls are not fun.
Wish I'd done it back in February but thought it wasn't necessary.
Either way, good luck & happy cdaning!

Thanks, I think I'll give up the name. No biggie. Thanks again!
