Who Registers For Christmas Gifts?

TMZ spotted Josh Duhamel and Fergie in a Crate & Barrel store scanning merchandise, so naturally TMZ asked them what in the hell they were doing? You think they didn't ask it that way, but if you have seen some of the video guys they have asking questions, they may have indeed asked it just like that. Anyway, Josh said that he and Fergie were registering for Christmas gifts.

Yes, I'm sure it is a bunch of crap and they probably are registering for a wedding, but there will be people who will think, "oh, what a great idea." Of course stores will jump all over it and the next thing you know people are enclosing lists of where they are registered for gifts in their annual Holiday Card/10 page letter about all of their accomplishments. For those of you who send out such a letter, I want you to know that I don't begrudge you doing it. I think it stems more from envy. Mine would go something like this. "Living at home with mom and dad still. Cut out pork rinds this year which was quite a shock to the system. My liquor store had a going out of business sale in the spring but I didn't find out about it until almost everything was gone. The good news is I had creme de menthe all summer long."

See? Not much in the way of "Junior got accepted to Harvard Medical School. Nancy discovered a way to make cars run on chicken feed, and Michael sent us on a world cruise for our 50th anniversary."

Anyway, I wish Fergie and Josh the best. My only advice would be that since you can probably afford anything you need, why not ask people to send money to your favorite charity instead.

I love how celebrities who can afford anything put so much expensive crap on their wedding registry. You should see some of the stuff at Tiffany's celebrity wedding registry, type in a name and check out all the crap they wanted, it hilarious

I envy AND judge people who send those annual holiday letters. Unfortunately most of them come from my own family.

Seriously, buy your own crap! I can't believe they're registering at C&B.

Well if theres anything that celebrities have learned by now, its to get as much free junk as you can. That way you can fake that you have more money than you really do.

come on now, we know how this works. after this pic was loaded to the net Crate and Barrel gift wrapped the lot and had it delivered, free of charge.

i agree Enty...donate, you cheap bastards.

Is it me or does Fergie look preggers in that photo?

I sent out a Christmas letter a few years ago which basically told everyone the truth. Nope, my kids didn't win the state championship in soccer this year; in fact, I have to bribe them with electronic goods to get them off the couch with their current electronic goods. Sure, we went to Europe, but I work overtime to pay for the croissants and cheese we consumed. We can barely keep up with ourselves, let alone the Joneses.

Register at C&B? When you make that much money? I hope they plan to donate their haul to some charity. I know my work has each department Adopt A Family and I gave a grocery certificate, which was one of the gifts that the family asked for. Maybe some impoverished family in L.A. is asking for C&B merchandise. Or maybe not. Maybe Josh and Fergie are just selfish bastards.

Oh, that's Fergie in the pic? I thought it was the sales lady. Def seeing a chin waddle there...

We gave up on buying presents for anyone outside of our immediate families. To me, it makes no sense to buy meaningless gifts for anyone other than the few people closest to you. I get a lot more out of a conversation with someone who is thinking of me than I do out of stinky soap or candle gift sets. Instead, my larger family just gets together and enjoy each others' company. It sounds sappy, but it sure beats going broke every December.
We don't get the holiday letters any more, either. I think anyone left with ambition in my family is now retired or dead. The rest of us are slackers who figure reading the occasional status updates on our Facebook profiles is a good substitute for a newsletter (or even an email, really).

Jax, actually, the owner of C&B is a pretty cool dude. :) I don't think he'd pull something like that. He's very proud of his company, and I don't think he'd lower himself to that kind of stunt.

Presents for the little kids only and charity.

Maybe a nice food or *beverage* gift for immediate family.

Everyone has so much damn material junk piled around catching dust, nobody really NEEDS anything except money to pay the bills and time to dust the junk!

@MontanaMarriott - I couldn't find the Tiffany's celebrity registry site. Any clues? Thanks!

"Presents for the little kids only and charity."

Exactly.

Actually, I have a pretty good thing with my friends. We don't typically buy each other anything, but if we see something we know they'll love, we'll get it for them. So there's no pressure to get a gift every year, just every once in a while.

Ahhh...Christmas, getting cheaper every year.

I live across the country from my family, so I generally send them themed mix CD's my hubby and I put together for the boys and some homemade (with lye!) vegetable oil soaps scented with essential oils (like lavender) for the girls.

We give actual presents only to those we spend Christmas day with, including my little niece and nephew. And, even those have an agreed upon price limit.

Amazon has been doing wish lists for literally a decade now. I think it's a good idea -- I'd rather get someone a gift they want (and vice versa) than deal with returns and/or pretending to like something.

It would be uber-tacky to send out an Xmas card with a list of where you're registered, though...

Crate and Barrel? Don't they already have champagne flutes/cheese boards/coasters/platters etc.?

mooshki said...

Exactly, Cheryl. Don't they already have the complete Calphalon set?

I'd rather wrap the cheese board they gave me last year and give it right back to their cheap ass. :)

Not sure what to think about this. Possibly, celebrities don't have rich families? Maybe, they are being considerate? Perhaps the tens of fans they have between them want the illusion that they are actually giving a gift to their idol?

I remember when I was getting married & people asked where I was registered, I told them Odd-Job.
To me it is the dumbest thing to make people buy you gifts you can get on sale yourself.
When my brother got married 3 years ago, they registered EVERYWHERE for the dumbest things, including 4 sets of china, service for 12 each, because his mother-in- law said "china is forever". No one listened about where they were going to put it in a NYC 1 bedroom apt. Sure enough, they had to return just about everything because of lack of room, & got stuck with a pile of credits.

Registry lists are fine for weddings because wedding gifts are not supposed to be for the couple themselves but for the couple's new home. A registry is handy for gift-givers and cuts down on returns, since if everyone knows how to use the registry there won't be any duplicate gifts. As long as the couple don't stick those abortions known as "registry cards" in the invitations there's no problem.

But they should only be used for weddings. Any other use is mondo tacky. And that includes showers.

oh Moosh you want to believe the good in everyone but the truth is in this economy advertising is the first to go. you really don't think they were sent a little something for the free advertising with two celebrities?

mooshki said...

Jax, the dude used to provide mimosas and chocolate-covered strawberries to those of us who had to work New Year's or Christmas Eve, so I refuse to have him slandered! :) I guess I could admit that an LA store manager might've done it.

jax said...

i wasn't slandering the dude anyway! that's business dear!

you better believe anyone working in an LA store would....besides the big cheese normally isn't in on these things. blame marketing.

I'm with Pimp Named Daver. We've been doing christmas lists in my immediate family for years. No one's exactly surprised come Christmas day, but no one leaves disappointed either. Outside the immediate family, it's gifts for the little ones and then a white-elephant exchange for the adults.

mooshki said...

Amber, almost everything I own is Crate & Barrel, and I haven't worked there for 10 years. As an employee, you could get slightly damaged or floor merchandise for as little as a nickel. I got my bed and two tables for $25 each. Good times! Oh, and every Christmas season, I blew most of my salary on ornaments - they are my crack.

Goodgrief said...

Mooshki, you worked at C&B too? I worked there for 5 years in the furniture dept. I got my king size bed for $30. I have more nickel schtickle than I have room for. The stock room manager always called me a schtickle whore. Most of my house is Crate and Barrel. Of course when I got to the 40% discount I quit. I agree on the christmas ornaments. On Christmas Eve we got go an pick out our stash of christmas goodies, put it in a bag with our name on it and then pay for it the day after christmas with the clearance price and our employee discount it was a great deal.I miss that part of the job.
