Paula Abdul Is Walking A Very Thin Line

Paula Abdul's manager called out the producers of American Idol over the weekend and said they better offer Paula a new contract worth lots of money or she is going to walk.

"She's not a happy camper as a result of what's going on. She's hurt. She's angry. I think at this point we're going to be considering everything, including some kind of a competition show. She has tremendous ideas for a whole variety of shows."

Is anyone else laughing as hard as me at the idea of Paula hosting a competition show? The only idea I can think of for a show would be to have like a Mystery Science 3K show where people watch old episodes of Hey Paula and make jokes about it. Oh, or who can come up with the best drinking game for all her American Idol appearances. Everytime Paula slurs a word you drink. Everytime she says "I liked it," or "You look great," you take two drinks. Every episode is timed to get you hammered in 22 minutes plus commercials.

A lot of what her manager says is just a bunch of hot air and bluster to get people on Paula's side, but she was the one who threatened to walk last year which caused Idol to bring in Kara DioGuardi. With Kara there, Paula has much less leverage to ask for a huge raise. Last year Paula made about $2.5M which is very generous for what she brings to the show. There are a lot of has beens out there who can play the complimentary role to a contestant and spar with Simon.

If she thinks she is going to get Ryan money or her manager has a dream of buying a yacht with his commission or something because he thinks she is going to get a Ryan Seacrest type deal, I think he is going to be really disappointed.

I'm surprised at the fans who fall for this unprofessional ploy.

I wonder if this is a problem because they won't pay her what they are paying Cowell and Seacrest and perhaps even Jackson. Something tells me that she is holding out for more money and they are balking at the notion and now is upset because they are openly considering other options.

Kara was brought in to replace Paula.

I don't watch AI but I would prefer Paula over Kara.

There's something about Kara that annoys the hell out of me.

I actually disagree with the notion that she has less leverage now that Kara is on the show. Kara turned out to be a dud. Paula's a loop-dee-loop but at least she is interesting.

eeep, they're playing a dangerous hand. this could totally flatline paula. i think her mgmt needs a reality check.

I had the same thoughts when I read the articles out there today. When I watch AI, it's definitely not because of Paula. Sure, she brings an entirely different element than the other folks but usually is so uncomfortable to watch or rambling so much that I fast forward through whatever she has to say. To me, Kara is too much like Randy, which makes what they have to say less relevant because they usually just repeat each other. It's nice to have three judges that each have their own variety, but Kara as #3 just doesn't do it. They just need to find a more coherent female who has a perspective different from the other two male judges. Let's see, what other former female singers/performers are out there that might be a good replacement?

I saw this coming when they brought Kara in. Personally, I would have put the squeeze on worthless Randy over Paula, but factoring in the likely backstage histrionics Paula brings, I understand where the producers are coming from. She reeled in the crazy last season in the face of Kara, but b4 that, the woman was a trainwreck who was derailing b4 our eyes.

Carrie S - Stevie Nicks would be perfect.

Oh man, I miss MST3K so much!

I don;t watch AI, but Paula is absolutely on SOMEthing.

I also caught a couple of partial SYTYCDance episodes and that Mary lady sounded half-crocked half of the time, too.

Damn, my job sucks sometimes too, but I don't get shi*t-faced just to be able to show up!

Little Miss Smoke and Mirrors -
Your Steve Nicks suggestion is inspired.

Kara is THE worst... she revealed herself to be more interested in self-promotion than the competitors or the show (Simon's genius is that he knows his star rises with the show's continued success). Sadly, I wasted time watching her try to compete with that Bikini Crazed Nightmare. She also reached a new low for reality judges in her final performance when she ripped open her dress (impressive stomach notwithstanding). PATHETIC.

Ms. Abdul - can take or leave her but don't think her presence or lack thereof will affect the ratings one iota.

Randy - Dawg Talk Be Damned - brings great energy and WOW track record credentials to the show.

What other women judges??? For controversy, what about Natalie Maines from the Dixie Chicks? Even in this post-Bush era, that would likely not fly in the South. Who else???

She is walking a thin line, but lucky for her it's not straight.

Ha ha Ror, well said! I think BritBrit would make an excellent judge! She sure has it all, and could probably outcrazy Paula, too!

You have to admit, though, that without Paula's "You're PURPLE!" and "I want to hang you on my rearview mirror in my car!" comments, AI would be a very different show. And not nearly as funny when drunk/etc.

fuck Paula, shes a nutjob with a pill problem that needs to take a nap in Betty Ford's rose garden.

I can't worry too much about Paula because I'm still in shock that Ryan Seacrest is getting $45 million. Will that man ever go away?

jax said...

not unless you have $46M to make it happen.

I seem to be the only one who likes Kara. Meh. I think her comments actually make sense. Paula's only good for her cringe-worthy behaviour and trite comments, otherwise I find her annoying as hell and disingenuous.

LOL, Jax! You're in rare form today. :-D

Agree with others who prefer P over K. Cannot stand K. And yes, any credibility she had tanked when she tried to physically compete with bikini chick. Sing the song - don't show your body. Not something P would have done at any time in her career.

@ jax-
a nap in betty ford's rose garden sounds quite lovely.

TinselSass-

I know I sure as hell wouldn't watch AI if they brought that cunt Maines on it. Ugly, warty, bloated little troll who thought it was so hip and original to bash President Bush. Oh yeah wow, like we hadn't heard it all before, you're so unique and cutting edge! Please. Besides, she'd just put her cloven hoof right back in her big fat mouth and we'd have to hear about her AGAIN, and once was enough. Please do NOT give anyone any ideas, let her fade into obscurity where she belongs.

There was something I just read that said Ryan Seacrest offered to buy her lunch e'ery day if she comes back. That's too funny! Girl was smacked by Ryan Seacrest!
