Sylvester Stallone Passed On Witness And Romancing The Stone
Sylvester Stallone gave an interview to the current issue of Cigar Aficionado where he talked about cigars and he also talked about movies. The focus of the interview was about how he blames the downfall of his career on doing movies like Stop Or My Mom Will Shoot. He says he took the paycheck then and did not ever think about what being in roles like that or Rhinestone would do to his career.
I think his problem is that he is just not that great of an actor and people got tired of Rocky and Rambo. Anyway, the thing that fascinated me the most in the interview was that he said he was offered but turned down Witness and Romancing The Stone.
That kind of took me by surprise for a second. There is no way he could have ever pulled off the Harrison Ford part in Witness. Not a chance in hell. The movie would have sucked. He also would have sucked just as bad and made a nightmare out of Romancing The Stone. He can't do comedy and it just would have been Rambo in Colombia. I am so grateful that for whatever reason he turned down those two movies. Thank you baby Jesus. And yes, I am also grateful he is not in that movie too.

I thought he did a great comedic turn in "Oscar" but how much of that is down to the brilliant support cast, I don't know.

Thank fuck he "passed" on Witness and Romancing the Stone. Love both movies. He could never be subtle enough for Witness and RtS is one of my all time fave movies. It's so perfect. I love it.

I used to love "Oscar". Chazz Palminteri and Peter Reigert were hilarious in that movie.
He didn't say he was up for the leads, though.
Maybe he turned them down cos it was just for featured extra. or Danny DeVito's role.

I can't see him be offered Romancing the Stone inasmuch as Michael Douglas was both Producer and star. It is possible that the Witness and RTS scripts might have been shown to Stallone some time earlier in their evolution.
Why does his face look like it was made of clay?
I loved Stallone in Copland. I thought he did a great job.
I'm glad he didn't do Romancing the Stone. As much as I hate Michael Douglas now, I loved that movie. Just watched it again recently.
I'm willing to bet he also passed on "Gone With The Wind" and "It's A Wonderful Life", too.
Sly is definitely not an idiot. He wrote the screenplay for "Rockie". Not a bad effort. Of course I will grant you that his range as an actor is somewhat limited.
Didn't Diane Thomas write Romancing FOR Douglas? If memory serves she loved him in Streets of San Francisco and wrote the role for M. D.
As for Witness, Harrison made that movie. I can't imagine Stallone in it. It would be like saying PeeWee Herman could be Rocky. YEAH RIGHT!

You didn't know? Pee Wee passed on both the "Rocky" and the "Rambo" franchises.
Stallone is one of the actors who actually surprised me on Inside the Actor's Studio. He was articulate, interesting, and I for one, was totally shocked. The cover doesn't reflect the book. At least in that hour of television.
